Why Do We Love Mount Mary?

What’s better than discovering an exciting new up and coming producer?

That’s easy, drinking something stunning from a producer who’s been a rock star for 40+ years and is still knocking them out of the park!
We love Mount Mary at MW Wines for so many reasons. We love the history which goes back to the first plantings in 1971. We love the unending commitment to quality and the authenticity that comes with sticking to doing what you do well, and resisting the urge to plant new varieties every year to meet trends in consumer land. Most of all we love drinking these wines! We love drinking them young with their elegant profiles and pretty aromatics. We love drinking them with bottle age from the cellar, basking in the structure and balance that only comes with great winemaking from beautiful vineyards and like all wine loving people, we love sharing them with friends and family because ultimately that’s one of life’s great joys, isn’t it!

A few weeks ago we opened up a 1990 Quintet and served it blind to the crew at MW. “Wow” was a common response upon tasting. In the world of options it wasn’t an easy one, many of us fell at the first hurdle picking it as an old world wine. What was universal was how much we all loved the wine. Credit where it’s due, Dave’s comment summed up how amazing Mount Mary wines can be, “If this isn’t old world then it has to be Victorian, and if it’s Victorian and Cabernet based with this structure it has to be Mount Mary, nothing else from Australia has that structure”. Well played Dave!

But don’t just take our word for it, James Halliday recently crowned Mount Mary the Winery of the Year; take it from here Mr Halliday…

“A single word cannot possibly do justice to Mount Mary’s Quintet, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Triolet. But they are joined at the hip by elegance. By all means add balance, purity and length, and as a codicil add longevity demonstrated by an all consuming tasting in 2016 of every vintage released of the four wines. The 2015 vintage in the Yarra Valley was, quite simply, great, and Sam (Middleton) took full advantage of it, making exquisite wines”.
James Halliday (The Wine Companion) 2018

2015 Mount Mary Quintet
$140 (RRP: $160)
Just because the Mount Mary wines are famed for their purity, elegance and balance doesn't mean that they eschew power and layered complexity. Quintet (the five Bordeaux varieties) is the king of the portfolio, the wine that was closest to founder Dr John Middleton's irascible heart. The vintage may have been especially great for Pinot, but the rainbow of cassis, redcurrant, dried herb and bramble flavours are absolutely exemplary.
97 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2018

2015 Mount Mary Pinot Noir
$135 (RRP: $150)
Bright, clear crimson-purple; everything about this wine exudes supreme class: the bouquet has a rose garden of perfume and spice, the palate a concerto for strings and clarinets, as predominantly red berry fruits glide around the finest quality tannins of the cello. The length and balance are awesome, and the wine will be singing soprano 20 years on from vintage.
99 points. Best Pinot Noir of the Year, Halliday Wine Companion 2018

2015 Mount Mary Chardonnay
$100 (RRP: $115)
Most of the wine is closed with a screwcap, a small amount with Diam 30, the tightest form of Diam. Gleaming light green-gold, this is no pale and wan lover, its embrace intense, white peach just in front of grapefruit. As one would expect from Mount Mary, the oak has been as important in shaping texture and mouthfeel as imparting flavour. All up, an icon for Yarra Valley Chardonnay.
97 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2018

2015 Mount Mary Triolet
$88 (RRP: $100)
65% Sauvignon Blanc, 21% Semillon, 14% Muscadelle, fermented separately in used oak, matured for 11 months with lees stirring. This is an uncommonly rich Triolet at this early stage, but that is all to the good, for it will mature majestically as all the vintages that preceded it have done.
96 points. James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion 2018

2015 Mount Mary Mixed 6 Pack
$710 (RRP: $835)
A mixed 6 Pack of these incredible wines includes:
2x 2015 Mount Mary Quintet
2x 2015 Mount Mary Pinot Noir
1x 2015 Mount Mary Chardonnay
1x 2015 Mount Mary Triolet
The Undisputed Benchmark of Australian Riesling

When you think about benchmark Riesling in Australia only one name comes to mind, Grosset. Established in 1981, the winery is situated in the historic township of Auburn in South Australia’s Clare Valley. There are four estate-owned vineyards; each is located in higher altitude country just north of the winery; each is certified organic and all fruit is hand-picked and processed through the organically certified winery at Auburn. Jeffrey Grosset was voted the inaugural Australian Winemaker of the Year by Gourmet Traveller WINE in 1998, and is internationally recognised as one of the ‘Top 10 White Winemakers’ (Decanter, UK) and one of the ‘50 Most Influential Winemakers’ (Wine & Spirits, USA) in the world today.

Jeffrey Grosset wears the unchallenged mantle of Australia's foremost Riesling maker. Grosset's pre-eminence is recognised both domestically and internationally.
James Halliday, (Best value winery) Halliday Wine Companion 2017

The best thing about Grosset is the sheer enthusiasm, utter commitment and genuine love for making something sublime and brilliant.
Andrew Caillard MW

The undisputed monarch of Clare Valley is Jeffrey Grosset, whose 32-year reign has seen a raft of superlative wines set standards to which other winemakers can only aspire.
Tyson Stelzer, Qantas Inflight Wine Guide 2012, Dec 2012

The 2017 vintage was a full month later than the previous two. It was almost European in character with such higher rainfall during the growing season. The resilience of our vines and their ability to consistently produce superior quality wine in a world where climatic conditions are changing is nothing short of a marvel. I recommend this latest release of wines to you.

2017 Grosset Polish Hill
750ml $53
Magnum $125 (Limited Availability)

The significantly later harvest has produced an extraordinary ‘Polish Hill’. Voluminous floral aromatics, with hints of talc and lavender, produce an exuberant youthfulness that gives vitality to a palate fleshed out by concentrated lime juice. The tight structure is there without the steeliness; controlled power, intensity and that characteristic ultra-dry character that thrills on the finish.
Jeff Grosset, Grosset

2017 Grosset Springvale
$39

The ‘Springvale’ also surprises being more intensely primal than it is in most vintages. It entices with lime and lemon blossom aromas. There’s layer after layer of mouth-puckering lime juice flavours, tight structure, spine-tingling acidity and shaley minerally notes that linger. It’s an outstanding ‘Springvale’, fine, intense, pure, minerally and dry.
Jeff Grosset, Grosset

2017 Grosset Alea
$34

This is an amazing riesling, perhaps the best yet under this label. It has intense lemon grass and lime juice characters which follow through on to the palate. The flavours are intensely concentrated, powerful and show incredible depth. The vibrant natural acidity balances the sweetness and lingers long and dry on the finish. The bouquet entices with bright floral and fresh garden herb aromas, supple, intense, tangy gooseberry and lychees flavours, good weight in the mid-palate, before crunchy acidity heralds a vibrant dry finish of considerable length.
Jeff Grosset, Grosset
