Jasper Hill 2016

Jasper Hill 2016

Not many producers can say they’ve helped shape an entire wine region and been at the forefront of that areas popularity. Even fewer can say their style has been the envy of their neighbours and the bane of those who have attempted to replicate it. Ron Laughton is a legend in Heathcote and justifiably so. His name is synonymous with wines of power, purity, and balance and at the height of importance to Jasper Hill is the sense of terroir. One of the pioneers of the Biodynamic movement in Australian viticulture, they have shown the way for future producers.
The 2016s are delicious wines with that hallmark length and structure that so many try to achieve but seldom do. We tried these a few weeks back and are so excited to have them in stock (albeit for a short time). We’re thrilled to have magnums of Georgia’s Paddock for the first time but a little sad that our allocation of Emily’s Paddock was a mere six bottles (cue sad face). We recommend these 2016s highly, give them a try while you still can.

Established by Ron and Elva Laughton, ever since the first vintage in 1982 Jasper Hill has been a small, family business. The 2017 vintage was their 36th. As the vineyards and their two daughters have grown over the years, both Emily and Georgia continue to work within the business. Emily has been passionately growing grapes and making wine alongside her father since 2001, whilst Georgia enjoys doing most of the administrative work. Ron and Elva live amongst the vines on Emily’s Paddock; Emily lives on Georgia’s Paddock vineyard with her husband Nick, daughter Ella and son Nate. Nick is also a highly valued member of the team, both in the vineyard and in the cellar
The wines are grown, made and bottled entirely on the estate from their own grapes, using organic and biodynamic principles. They produce their own biodynamic composts and have never used synthetic chemicals on either the vines or the soils, since the vineyards were planted in 1975. Viticultural practices are simple: own rooted vines, no irrigation whatsoever, minimal tillage, natural inter-row mulching leading to broad bio-diversity, very low yields giving depth and intensity to the wines.

With more than three decades behind them and many accolades, Jasper Hill has become synonymous with Heathcote and is regarded as one of the pioneers of this relatively new and exciting wine region.

Jasper Hill is a dryland vineyard planted since 1975 on soils derived from Cambrian period basaltic rock of 500-600 million years age. It is without question the iconic vineyard of the Heathcote wine region in central Victoria, and since the 2009 vintage has re-emerged as one of Australia’s most important vineyards. There’s grace and balance about them that should ensure a longevity reminiscent of the great releases of the late 1980s and early 1990s.

2016 Emily’s Paddock Shiraz Cab Franc (750ml) $120
(Limit of one bottle per order)

Characteristic intensity of deep red colour to the edge with its true-to-style elegant yet full barrage of complex flavours, including the normal creaminess of oak and the hint of choco-mint. Fabulously long, acid finish and sufficient supple tannins to confer a long life.

2016 Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz (750ml) $85
2016 Georgia’s Paddock Shiraz (1500ml) $185

From a low yielding vintage, giving a weighty version of this wine with typical dark magenta colour and aromas of plum, ripe red berries and spice that follow through on to the full palate, finishing with a concentration of earthy, chalky tannins balanced with lots of natural acidity. Great longevity.
