Piedmont and Pinot Noir!

by Hugh French | Oct 19, 2017

Piedmont and Pinot!

Here at MW, we love Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir, whether it be from Piedmont or Victoria, Cote du Nuits or the Adelaide Hills. For this reason, we are excited to offer new Nebbiolos from Brezza and Ceretto, alongside a delightful Shaw + Smith Pinot Noir from 2016, a vintage that looks like it could be one of the best for the Adelaide Hills in some time.

The following wines are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or by or calling us on 03 9419 6990.

Brezza

Nestled in vineyards just steps outside the center of the village Barolo you will find the winery as well as the Restaurant and Hotel all of which is owned and operation by the Brezza family.
Proprietors of tradition for 4 generations, we believe today that the best way to represent the uniqueness of our terroir in our wines is to stay in constant harmony with the land and its fruits. Currently the family is working organically farmed vineyards. Our philosophy is to produce mono varietal wines and to take more care to better their health of the vineyard.

2015 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
$34

This is effectively a declassification of Barolo commune wines, most of it from the cru Rue, with those gorgeous rose and strawberry fruits and a classy, sappy overlay. Really great acid/tannin thing achieved here.
David Ridge, David Ridge Wines

We recently tasted this wine blind and I think it's fair to say there would have been written warnings handed out if we couldn't pick the grape variety. After looking at the nose it was unmistakably Langhe Nebbiolo. The varietal nature was phenomenal.  Bright, fresh and approachable now. Fantastic drinking, young Nebbiolo.

2013 Barolo 'Castellero' DOCG
$95

Dark cherry, pine, mint, blood orange and spices give the 2013 Barolo Castellero much of its exotic, resonant personality. Beams of tannin and acidity add to the wine's energetic personality. The 2013 could use a few years to soften, but it is quite tasty, even today. The Castellero is the most impressive of these 2013s today.

2013 Barolo 'Sarmassa' DOCG
$120

Barolo. Pale ruby with orange tinges. The most concentrated on the nose of the three Brezza crus, with liquorice and strawberry on the nose, as well as the most approachable. Elegant yet with a firm structure and with impressive balance. A very elegant wine for this vineyard.

Ceretto

I was blown away by the wines I tasted at Ceretto during my most recent visit. The 2013 Barolos are off the charts, while the 2014 Barbarescos are just as impressive. Small changes in the use of yeasts during fermentation and a move towards earlier picking are among the decisions that Alessandro Ceretto made in 2013 that paid off big time. The 2013 Barolos spent approximately about 25 days on the skins, followed by 9 months in barrique and two years in cask. The malos are all done in barrique. These wines are a big step up after the irregular 2012s. Hopefully Ceretto will be able to build on this level of quality going forward.

2014 Barbaresco 'Bricco Asili' DOCG
$280

The 2014 Barbaresco Bricco Asili is almost shockingly powerful. Dark, intense and virile in its expression, the 2014 shows a distinctly masculine side of Asili, with huge fruit and equally imposing tannins. Today, the 2014 is raw and unformed, but also full of potential. Dense and packed, the Bricco Asili shows a bit of oak influence that needs time to integrate. I can't wait to taste it in another year or two.

2013 Barolo 'Brunate' DOCG
$210

Ceretto's 2013 Barolo Brunate is superb. Dark, sensual and inviting, but also super-refined, the 2013 possesses exceptional overall balance. Sweet cherry, kirsch, menthol, rose petal, blood orange, licorice, sage and herbs all grace the palate in this translucent, strikingly beautiful Barolo. All of the pedigree and class of Brunate comes through. This is a wine of remarkable grace and compelling beauty.

2013 Barolo 'Bricco Rocche' DOCG
$395

The 2013 Barolo Bricco Rocche is another magnificent wine from Ceretto. The interplay of aromatics, fruit and structure is simply dazzling. All of the perfume of Bricco Rocche comes through, but there is also more than enough acidity, structure and overall depth to provide for many years of exceptional drinking. Aromatic intensity, tension and layered fruit are some of the signatures. Wow!

Shaw + Smith

In 1988 Michael Hill Smith had just completed the grueling Master of Wine examination. The following year, teaming up with cousin Martin Shaw, Shaw + Smith was founded. The vision being, a 'virtual winery' with a steadfast commitment to sourcing only the best fruit from the best growers.
1999 saw purchase of the current property in Balhannah, with the first Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vines being planted in 2000. Those plantings, now with a greater vine age, are offering more depth and complexity, and the inclusion of Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz (Len Evans Tutorial Dux) has solidified the continuing commitment to wines of the highest quality.

2016 Pinot Noir
$46

A dry winter and spring set the 2016 vintage in good stead, with rain falling at the most opportune of times in January giving the vines some much needed respite. What followed was an excellent, even ripening period that garnered good yields and healthy fruit. 2016 is set to be a stand out vintage for Pinot Noir in the Adelaide Hills.
The vintage is magnificently reflected in the 2016 Shaw + Smith Pinot Noir. Perfumed and concentrated primary fruit characters, with a seasoning of oak and whole bunch providing a silky structure. Tasted by the team here at MW at the end of a big week...very enjoyable!
