Blazing a trail is as natural to Cullen as grasping for the sun to a vine shoot. This Margaret River pioneer boldly took off as pace setter for certified organic, biodynamic winegrowing in Australia. Thanks to the unshakeable conviction and uncanny brilliance of Vanya Cullen, it’s right out at the front of the pack, with a clarity of varietal and vineyard expression that others can only marvel at.

Cullen’s extraordinary ‘Vanya’ release created quite a stir from 2012, and returns in 2015 having been fermented and matured in amphora before a shorter (five month) stint in oak (two thirds of which are new). The currency of vessels aside, the fruit, grown biodynamically of course, is from older vines under the care of Cullen. An emphatic assertion about Australia, Margaret River, fine wine Down Under, and the dedication of the Cullen family.

2015 Vanya Cabernet Sauvignon

A wine of immense presence yet understatement and finesse. Succulence in texture, fine, powdery tannins reaching impossibly long in the palate, a deep stain of black berries and bayleaf – sounds familiar but it’s the way its packed so impossibly finely into its neat, filigree frame where the magic is. There’s a plume of fine perfume, spiced, gently woody, dark in fruit and lifted on undergrowth and peppery spice character. So much charm here. And quiet power. And precision in the way it hits the mouth tight, building in grip, lingering with mouthwatering readiness. Elegance in wine can be ephemeral as concept or definition, but here’s one for Encyclopaedia Britannica. Outstanding.

Domaine Jean-Marc Pavelot

Hugues Pavelot noted that 2015 "gave us a relatively easy growing season but it wasn't without some challenges in the sense that figuring out exactly the right moment to pick wasn't obvious. Whenever you have an extremely hot and mostly dry growing season the trick is to preserve the freshness. We chose to begin picking the whites on the 30th of August and picked a few parcels of pinot on the 31st but as a practical matter we didn't seriously attack them until the 3rd of September. It was easy to harvest quickly as the fruit basically couldn't have been any cleaner and it had good but not really high levels of potential alcohols as everything came in between 12.3 and 13%. Quantities were another story however as we had the same yields for the villages parcels as we did in 2014 but even less in our 1ers. I did a very soft vinification as the colors came almost immediately and the wines were already structured by the third day! Moreover I really wanted to avoid having fat and heavy wines with no obvious pinot fruit so my approach was that less was more as it were. Everyone always says that the wines should drink well young and old as that makes them more attractive to everyone. However in 2015 I really do think that the style of the vintage will allow for this kind of approachability given how rich the wines are yet underneath the baby fat is a serious amount of tannin that should allow them to age for a very long time." The Pavelot team rarely misses and it will not surprise fans of the domaine to read that they certainly didn't in 2015.

2015 Savigny-les-Beaune


A notably ripe nose combines notes of plum, violet, earth and a hint spice. There is both good energy and delineation to the polished, delicious and relatively refined middle weight flavors that possess fine depth and sneaky good length. This is sufficiently forward that it should drink well young.

2015 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru 'Aux Guettes'

Notes of black cherry, cassis, plum and earth introduce firm, dense and powerful medium-bodied flavors that exhibit even more minerality that adds lift to the balanced and impressively persistent finish where hint of mocha and warmth appear. While this muscular yet quite generously proportioned effort possesses a dense lashing of tannin, it is not especially austere and thus I expect that it will drink well young.

2015 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru 'La Dominode'

An extremely ripe nose stops short of being jammy though there is a whiff of prune. Otherwise there is excellent energy to the fresh, sleek and tautly muscular flavors that are dense, powerful and very serious plus they deliver superb depth and length on the slightly warm finish. This is a wine that has impressive underlying material but the nose concerns me and thus it's hard to project how this will fare with age as it risks becoming heavy. That said, there are enough positive attributes present that my predicted range offers the benefit of the doubt.

Egon Müller

The Sharzhofberg vineyard, nestled in a valley just offthe Saar river,is often recognised as one of the preeminent cool climate vineyard sites. Its steep slopes and south facing aspect is a perfect exampleof the maxim 'Sunlight, not heat, ripens grapes'. Here, grapes ripen slowly allowing for the development of immense concentration and character. From approximately 8 hectares of this famed vineyard, the Müller estate has been extracting the finest Riesling since 1797. Handed down through the family and paying respect to thehistory and land from which the wine is drawn, Egon Müller firmly stamps itself as one of the great producers of the world.

2016 ScharzhofRiesling

Super-fresh, wild herbal and berry nose. Very pure and racy with a lot of drive. Tastes drier and lighter than the 2015, but this is another classic example of the house style. Drink any time during the next five years.

2016 Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett

This is very clean and pure with an intense herbal-mineral quality that's beautifully complemented by the apple and berry notes. The finish has an Alpine meadow freshness that no other kabinett from this vintage I've tasted has, and that's the most exciting thing about it.

2016 ScharzhofbergerRiesling Spatlese

Lovely, orange blossom and bergamot/Earl Grey tea nose that's unique. A super-elegant wine that underplays its power and concentration. That makes the finish very delicate and deceptively light. A masterpiece of subtlety that you could drink now or any time during the next 30 years.

And while we're talking all thingsMüller we also have a few bottles with age from the highly rated 2010 vintage. These are an absolute bargain, in a great drinking window with the capacity to age gracefully over the next few decades.

2010ScharzhofbergerRiesling Spatlese

Smoky notes, touch of truffle, honeyed, caramel, baked apples. Fleshy texture, ripe fruit, big hit of Riesling – very spicy feel too. It’s got a punch of juicy, complex, developing fruit character that works its way around the palate and makes for utterly compelling drinking. Cool booze.

2010ScharzhofbergerRiesling Auslese

Pale golden yellow with a green tinge. Very rich aromas of candied peach, acacia blossom and cinnamon over a bed of spicy botrytis. The palate offers a rich, velvety sweetness with a texture of apricot preserves with an almost honeyed glaze—and subtle mineral depth that underlines the slate. Dense, lively and impressively long, this auslese is both polished and high-toned. A masterpiece.
