2014 Vasse Felix Tom Cullity and Jane Eyre's 2017 Victorian Pinot Noir

We're big fans of Margaret River Cabernet at MW and our subscribers are no strangers to the iconic wines of Cullen and Moss Wood. Vasse Felix have been producing stellar award winning wines since their inception in 1967. In fact Vasse Felix is one of the founding producers of the Margaret River region and their importance in shaping it as a premium producer, particularly of Cabernet and Chardonnay cannot be understated.

It was only a matter of time before they released a super premium Cabernet from their amazing old vines so in 2013 the Tom Cullity was born. Named in honour of their founder, this newly released 2014 is next level with intense concentration, incredible elegance and balance. As you can see from the press below the wine media agrees with us that this might be one of the best Bordeaux blends ever to come out of Margaret River!

Also this week we have the two Victorian Pinot Noirs from Jane Eyre. Since leaving Australia for France in 1998, Jane has carved out her place in Burgundy, working under Dominique Lafon, forging alliances with Benjamin Leroux and releasing her own wines from Burgundy to favourable reviews. She now divides her time making wine in both Burgundy and Victoria, with William Downie minding the vines in her absence.

2014 Tom Cullity Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec/Petit Verdot
$175

This is a single-vineyard wine at the pinnacle of the endeavors of Vasse Felix. Opens with red fruits in the redcurrant and red-cherry zone, showcasing fresh red and purple flowers and some deeper blue-fruit notes. The palate's the thing though: The way in which the malbec entwines itself around cabernet's linear tannins and enriches the wine without fundamentally changing its shape is genius. Supple, fresh and commanding Margaret River red. A very insightful blend of predominantly cabernet sauvignon with 16% malbec and 4% petit verdot. Best from 2022. Screw cap.

Huon Hooke Medium to deep red/purple colour, not that dark. The bouquet is beautifully complex and detailed, with tobacco, leafy, blueberry, violets and dusty foresty overtones. The fruit flavours are bright and intense, poised and very elegant. Blueberry and violets in abundance. Fine-grained tannins, fine structure. A lovely wine. (16% malbec, 4% petit verdot) 2019-2042

Icouldn't see the fuss at first - and then it hit me. It's a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Malbec and 4% Petit Verdot. It sees 62% new French oak and while there's oak to be tasted here, the fruit has largely soaked it all up. It's a cracking wine. It seems light at first, both in colour and flavour, but as it breathes it blossoms and once you've spent time with it then it really begins to boom. The power is all under the bonnet; there's nothing particularly flashy about it. It tastes of camphor and blackcurrant, mint, anise, black olive, bay leaves and smoky oak. Tannin is a kind of crescendo of its own, though it's not an island: there's fruit here, gloriously ripened, picked just before it went too far. Length here is quite outstanding.
Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front -96 points

A very pointed and pristine perfume with immense complexity. Lively fruit from this vintage is preserved precisely. The oak and savoury complexity is intricately interwoven yet the immense power of the fruit, while delicate, is brimming with character. Notes of red currant, cranberry jam and raspberry pips give way to agar, gravel, a hint of peppermint tree, mushroom and bark. The palate is vibrant with mouth-watering cranberry freshness and while light, is juicy, precise and balanced with remarkable fine grained tannins. Long cassis and cherry pip flavoured tannins create a dry and fine finish. A significant Cabernet of uniquely delicate proportions.

Jane Eyre Pinot Noir

We love Jane's Pinot for their classic expression of where they come from, their purity of fruit to deliver but mostly we think we just like Jane! We had her here in the office recently showing off her 2017 Pinot's from Mornington and Gippsland which were delicious and every bit as good as the stunning 2015's we featured back in 2016. These deliver serious bang for buck from a woman who has quietly gone along forging a great reputation both in Victoria and Burgundy where she makes Gevrey-Chambertin, Savigny-les-Beaune etc. for half the year before coming "home" to make the Jane Eyre wines in Victoria.

2017 Mornington Pinot Noir
$45

Plush, bright and so pure this is a really great example of Mornington Pinot. This fruit comes off two Merricks vineyards that are about 20 years of age. It's 100% hand picked, destemmed and after being pressed is aged in old oak for 10 months before being bottled. Totally approachable now the wines will live a long time and no doubt evolve slowly under screw cap.

2017 Gippsland Pinot
$45

Let me qualify this by declaring that I'm a big fan of Gippsland Pinot...this wine rocks! It's got that great earthiness about it that you don't see in too many other regions in Victoria. Behind the crushed earth notes you initially get, there's pure sour cherries at the core of a wine with fabulous structure that will look better and better as each year passes (if you have the patience). The fruit comes off the Berry's Creek vineyard which is 30 years old and organically farmed. Production is identical to the Mornington so that both wines can express the dirt from which they came.
