2016 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey & 2016 Giaconda Release

Late last week we received our allocations from two producers at the top of their respective regions.

Firstly, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey who has shot to the top of White Burgundy producers over recent years through the incredible quality of his wines produced in Saint-Aubin. 2016 saw a dramatic decrease in yields after spring frosts and trying, damp conditions decimated the vines. The vines that escaped the wrath of nature did manage to produced delicious wines with a focus on finesse and aromatic purity. The 2016 release from Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey won't hang around for long. With such limited supply, make sure you don't miss out on these wines from a star producer of Burgundy!

Next we have the biggest name in Australian Chardonnay, Giaconda of which the much anticipated Estate Chardonnay, Estate Shiraz and Warner Shiraz have recently arrived with us. 2016 Bourgogne Blanc

The only cuvée that’s bigger than usual in 2016 because these parcels didn’t suffer from frost. Supplemented by a little very hard-hit (frost) St-Aubin parcel.Stony and uncompromising. Very much PYCM style. Not nearly ready. You might almost take this for a Chablis in structure. Extremely bracing.

2016 Saint-Aubin 'Le Banc'

Bright yellow-green. Lovely intensity and lift to the aromas of nectarine, lime and herbs. Pure, fruit-driven Chardonnay with lively mineral lift. Finishes with good length and sweetness.

2016 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru 'Cuvee Marguerite'

Blend of three parcels (including Les Champlots) and named after his grandmother, who died just before the frost.Very generous on the nose – unusually so for a PYCM wine. Then razor-sharp acidity on the palate; very much the house style! Intense impact on the palate but pretty dry on the end.

2016 Saint-Aubin 1er Cru 'Les Champlots'

Bright yellow-green. Aromas of nectarine, white pepper and herbs. Juicy, clean, smaller-scaled wine with a fine-grained texture and good energy. Spice and mineral flavors carry through to a perfumed finish featuring sneaky length. The crop here was barely one-quarter of normal, according to Colin, who added that his yields in Saint-Aubin ranged from 11 to 15 hectoliters per hectare in 2016.

Bright yellow. A musky touch of reduction to the aromas of white peach, nectarine, herbs and mint. Pliant, easygoing wine with surprising sweetness, but sound acidity intensifies the fruit and extends the finish.

2016 Estate Chardonnay

Golden hue with a bright green rim. A complex signature of reductive characters; meal, the 'good dirt' and matchstick complimenting hazelnut and peach notes infused with lemon zest and ginger. The palate is taut and compact with a strong mineral edge drawing out white peach fruit. A powerful and assertive example of chardonnay that combines multifaceted flavours with latent power. The finish is compelling: minerality and acidity combine to a rapier sharp finish.

2016 Estate Shiraz

Lifted, enticing and highly satisfying. A genial welcoming impact of lifted red to darker fruits laced with notes of clove, musk, and baked beetroot, underscored by a beguiling graphite minerality. A generous, rich and rounded palate. This has volume, showing seductive red plum fruit with a spicy edge underpinned by moreish powder fine tannins, voluptuous and silky on one level, savoury and mineral on another.

2016 Warner Shiraz

A kaleidoscope of flavours and aromatics: a heady offering of earth, beetroot, satsuma plums, damp rose petals, briar, cold tea and Chinese five spice. The palate is a mirror image of the bouquet, showing purity, depth and harmony between the elements of fruit, tannin, oak and acidity. Fine savoury tannins underpin the racy spiced plum fruit. An utterly seductive and beautifully perfumed wine that underscores just how exciting shiraz can be when grown at altitude in granitic soils.
