2017 Felton Road Release, Best's Old Vine Pinot Meunier and Domaine Leflaive

by Hugh French | Jul 13, 2018

Felton Road, Best's Old Vine Pinot Meunier and Domaine Leflaive

This weeks offer features a diverse selection of producers from three different countries, all of whom are at the top of their game and are revered within their own terroir.

Felton Road make Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from their stunning vineyards in Central Otago. Working on a very minimalist approach, all wines are gravity fed in the winery to avoid pumping juice uphill, ferments all occur naturally with wild yeasts and oak is very much a mere seasoning here, used sparingly to ensure the fruit really shines. Often considered one of the high tide marks in New Zealand Pinot Noir, we have very little of the amazing Block 3 available so you'll have to be quick to secure yourself this fantastic Kiwi wine.

Best's are a massive chapter in the storybook of Australian wine history. The original plantings at their Great Western estate date back to the 1860s making them some of the oldest and most significant pre-phylloxera vines on earth. They do so much well here but this week we feature the always delicious Old Vine Pinot Meunier. But it's not just us who are fans of this wine, James Halliday also loved it and scored it a very well deserved 98 points!

Finally, there's Domaine Leflaive...not a bad place to finish! If you're a fan of White Burgundy then odds are you're a fan of theirs. Sadly we can't sit around drinking Chevallier-Montrachet everyday (can we?) so this week we offer one of their best value wines, Macon-Verze. The 2016 has great purity and surprising minerality for a wine at this level. It's only going to get harder in the next few years to find a bargain from Chablis or White Burgundy so don't miss your chance to grab some of this while you still can.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only.

Felton Road

2017 Block 3 Pinot Noir
Usually $140 - Special Offer $125 - Add to Cart
Limited Availability

Opening notes of characteristic Indian spice and dried herbs overlie a basket of ripe dark fruits. In the mouth it’s opulent and profound: the sheer breadth on the palate is staggering. It’s not ripeness or concentration of fruit that’s leading the charge; more a perfect harmony, balance and utter completeness. There’s no doubting its somewhereness: it is unique and that’s what we love about Block 3. Velvety textured tannins eventually bring it all to a close...then come back for an encore!

2017 Cornish Pinot Noir
Usually $89- Special Offer $80 - Add to Cart

Ripe plum and an earthy savouriness are complimented with mocha and rose petal. The immediately inviting and generous mouthfeel is in the usual extroverted Cornish Point manner. However, every component is in superb balance with not a step out of place: a sign of things to come as vine age starts to dominate in this vineyard. Chocolate nut tannins flow across the palate building presence and scale. Like a favourite soft and comfortable sofa: easy to melt in to!

2017 Bannockburn Pinot Noir
Usually $75- Special Offer $70 - Add to Cart

The aroma leads to a bright and lifted combination of red and dark fruits with considerable florals. On the palate, there is a combination of transparency, power and tension. The silky entry of spice and savoury notes expand to pure, deep fruits, braced with acidity, but luscious throughout. The frame is a finely woven latticework: intricate and detailed with a strong sense of longevity. This exemplary wine is a blend of our four properties that elegantly expresses the graceful and more subtle side of Pinot Noir from Bannockburn.

2017 Bannockburn Chardonnay
Usually $55 - Special Offer $50- Add to Cart

The nose is an intense and complete harmony of white peach, hazelnut and freshly baked bread. The palate is initially opulent and mouth-filling but rapidly brought into fine focus with a spine of citrus and a hint of flint. It’s exactly what we have come to expect from Bannockburn Chardonnay: subtle, powerful yet intricate, with characteristic bright acidity giving a juicy finish and considerable length. Precision and honesty contribute to this distinctive and fine Chardonnay.

Domaine Leflaive

2016 Macon-Verze
Usually $64 - Special Offer $59- Add to Cart

Clay and limestone soils...The harvest is entirely manual (and) the pressing is done in Verze. The musts are transported daily after settling to Puligny-Montachet for fermentation and aging...The vinification is done in vats, and the breeding extends from 15 to 16 months. The resulting wine is a wine of great purity, both floral and mineral, which releases a lot of energy and liveliness.
