Freshly Landed 2016 J.J. Prum

Freshly Landed 2016 J.J. Prüm

No matter what kind of mood you are in, the world always seems a better place with a glass of Prüm in hand; these are gracious, charming, wines that go straight for the heart leaving you only with the desire to finish the bottle quickly, resolving to finish a second bottle more slowly and reflectively.”
Stephan Reinhardt

The Prüm family name is synonymous with the Mosel and can be traced there back as far as 1156, but it was Johann Josef Prüm who founded the estate back in 1911 and they have sat at the summit of Riesling production for decades.

We were lucky enough to taste through the new release 2016s with the importer last week and one can’t help but be impressed by this estate. Coming off an extraordinary vintage in 2015,it was always going to be tough to follow up but they’ve lost nothing with the 2016s in terms of quality. The racy acid backbone isn’t as pronounced as it was previously but the aromatics are classic, floral and lifted and the length of the palate is just as impressive as always. The signature precision of Prüm is on show as always and they’re wines that, in most instances, are imminently drinkable now but much better with time and careful cellaring.

2016 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett
750mL Usually $69 - Special Offer $64 - Add to Cart

The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett (AP 21 17) is deep, cool and flinty on the nose, pretty mineral though still a bit reductive. Round, intense and juicy, this is a densely woven Kabinett with ripe nectarine and plummy flavors as well as a tightly woven and refreshing mineral structure. The finish is pretty persistent and extremely stimulating. Compared to the Badstube, the Himmelreich is more aromatic and expressive.

2016 Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spätlese
750mL Usually $79 - Special Offer $75- Add to Cart

Sultry, headily sweet scents of lily and gardenia mingle with those of fresh apple and dark cherry. The buoyant, subtly creamy palate is loaded with inner-mouth perfume that carries into a lusciously lingering finish tinged with nicely contrasting alkaline and set stone notes.

2016 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese
750mL Usually $85 - Special Offer $81- Add to Cart
Magnum Usually $189 - Special Offer $180- Add to Cart

The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Spätlese (AP 08 17) is discreet and smoky on the deep, well-defined nose. Juicy-piquant and salty on the well-structured and refreshingly mineral palate, the Himmelreich is tight and expressive, with the sweetness superbly balanced by the spicy, grippy phenols/minerals. This is a really complex Spätlese that is highly stimulating today and will still be so in 20 or 30 years.

The 2016 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spätlese (AP 23 17) is still discreet, floral and finely mineral rather than fruity on the nose compared to the other 2016 Spätlesen. Lush, piquant and juicy on the palate, this is a firm but sensual Sonnenuhr with remarkable finesse, lightness and lingering salinity

2016 ZeltingerSonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese
750mL Usually $105 - Special Offer $98- Add to Cart

Katharina's 2016 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Spätlese (AP 06 17) is super clear, precise and aromatic on the nose, showing good concentration that is perfectly interwoven with the smoky minerality of the Sonnenuhr. Super lush and round on the palate, this is a gorgeously rich and supple Spätlese with remarkable finesse and elegance. The acidity is ripe and fully integrated. The Zeltinger drinks perfectly today—and it won't survive in any cellar, because you just can't resist it.

2016 Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese Goldkapsel
750mL Usually $229 - Special Offer $215- Add to Cart

What a fantastic bouquet! The 2016 Graacher Himmelreich Auslese Gold Capsule is super deep, intense and precise on the nose where flinty/stony notes and very fine (and slightly spicy) raisin and grapefruit aromas are displayed. Rich, lush and super sexy on the palate, with highly delicate but intense and persistent fruit and very fine salinity, this is a gorgeous Auslese from the winner of the 2016 vintage chez Prüm: Graacher Himmelreich. This gold-capsuled Auslese (AP 10 17) is rich, finessed and almost weightless in its intensity. The salty and piquant acidity is alive and kicking. You can hardly produce a better Auslese in this delicate and filigreed style. 8% alcohol.
