The days may be getting longer as we dive into Spring and look forward to the warmer months but the nights are still fresh and cry out for lush red wines. Cue the Rhone and we have some new vintages from a couple of MW Wines favourites just released into the country.

Clos Saint Jean make stunning wines of depth, power and balance. We showed the 2015 Chateauneuf-du-Pape at one of our tastings last year and it was an absolute show stopper. 2015 was a great vintage in the Rhone but isn't as acclaimed as 2016. Check out the reviews below and grab some of these while you still can.

What can one say about Guigal? They're not a small producer like Clos Saint Jean but they are a great one with a consistent track record going back to the 1940s. Currently third generation winemaker Philippe Guigal and his wife Eve oversee the estate which has gone from strength to strength acquiring new (old) vineyards and expanding to be one of the Rhone's greatest producers. Where they shine is in Hermitage and Cote Rotie and we have some great releases from them on offer this week.

Clos Saint Jean

2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Usually $89 - Now $79 - Buy Now

The lush, fruit-forward 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape is a good introduction to the domaine's Grenache-dominated style, boasting copious amounts of cherry and apricot fruit. It's full-bodied and velvety in texture, with attractive hints of licorice emerging on the long finish. With its slightly more prominent acidity, it should drink well for longer than the 2015 or 2017 versions.
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate - 92 Points

2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'La Combe des Fous'
Usually $199 - Now $179 - Buy Now

From a single exposed hilltop parcel, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape La Combe des Fous is a blend of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% each Cinsault and Vaccarèse. As the Syrah was aged in wood, there's a hint of campfire smoke here, plus layers of rich, voluptuous plummy fruit. Full-bodied and velvety in texture, this is more concentrated than even the Vieilles Vignes bottling, but it's not that much better in terms of overall quality or longevity.
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate - 95 Points

2016 Chateauneuf-du-Pape 'Deus Ex Machina'
Usually $199 -Now $179 - Buy Now

Bottled just four weeks prior to my visit, the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus Ex Machina was showing no ill effects of the process. A blend of 60% Grenache with 40% Mourvèdre, it reveals intriguing notes of crushed stone, pencil shavings, black olives, tar and licorice on the nose. It's so massive and concentrated that it's almost painful to taste yet is seductive at the same time for its rich, velvety texture and incredible length. Somehow it manages all this but appears nimble and light at the same time, easily hiding what must be considerable alcohol.
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate - 98 Points

2015 Crozes-Hermitage
Usually$55 - Now $49 - Buy Now

Very dense crimson indeed. Really quite majestic fruit on the nose. Full phenolic ripeness.
Philippe Guigal says he has never seen this quality from Crozes before.Attractive hint of Camembert(!) and very dry, glossy, ripe fruit. Masses of substance. Much more concentration than usual. Great stuff.
Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com - 16.5+ Points

2015 Saint-Joseph
Usually $64 - Now $55 - Buy Now

Super concentrated and ripe, the 2015 Saint Joseph exceeds expectations. Blueberry and blackberry pie aromas lead into a wine that’s medium to full-bodied and round in the mouth yet structured at the same time, with a granitic coolness that holds it all together. It should prove to be a shrewd purchase for folks who buy for taste rather than label.
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate - 91-93 Points

2013 Chateauneuf-du-Pape
Usually $105 - Now $95 - Buy Now

The 2013 Chateauneuf du Pape is the current release, having spent three years in foudres prior to bottling. It’s ready to drink, yet it still has some tannin to offer and marries that structure to notes of cherries, leather and licorice on the supple finish.
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate - 91 Points

2013 Cote-Rotie 'Brune et Blonde'
Usually $135 - Now $120 - Buy Now

The 2013 Cote Rotie Brune et Blonde is herbal, peppery and meaty. This was a difficult vintage according to Philippe Guigal, who says “time helps. The wines were really tough at the beginning.” It’s medium-bodied and wiry in build, with savory flavors and an astringent finish.
Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate - 89 Points

Very dark. Juicy and round and sinewy. A bit cool on the finish and slightly pinched for the moment.
Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com - 17 Points
