This week the hits just keep on coming with some gorgeous new releases finding their way to MW Wines. There's Nervi-Conterno from Gattinara with stunning Nebbiolos from very old vines. We have new Burgundies from superstars Domaine Leflaive and Domaine Ramonet, and finally iconic Yarra Valley producer Yarra Yering have their new releases out (we're massive fans of theirs here).

Nervi is the oldest surviving winery in Gattinara, established in 1906 when Italo Nervi was able to buy land cheaply in the area after devastating hailstorms the previous year had pushed the region into economic hardship.

Today it comprises 28Ha – out of around 100Ha in the entire Gattinara denomination – making it a major player as well as a long-standing one.

There were a few changes of ownership between 1976 and 2011, but in 2018 one of the undisputed masters of Barolo Roberto Conterno acquired 90% of the business for €5M, which got him 28Ha of high-quality Gattinara for a price not dissimilar to buying 1Ha of prime Barolo cru. That seems like a pretty good deal, particularly at a time when Gattinara seems to be getting a bit more visibility in the wine world.

The biggest difference between Langhe and Gattinara is the elevation. Gattinara is, for the most part higher in altitude, experiences cooler temperatures and much higher rainfall than the Langhe. This makes for a more approachable Nebbiolo with elegance and finesse. If you love Barolo and Barbaresco, these are really worth a look!

2015 Gattinara DOCG

100% Nebbiolo. With neither single cru released in this vintage (a decision made some time back by Roberto and Enrico), fruit from all four of their crus has gone into this blend: Molsino, Valferana, Garavoglie and Casacce, ranging from 290-420 metres altitude. After gentle destemming and crushing, a 15-day fermentation/maceration in steel takes place, followed by a little over 3 years ageing in large Slavonian botti. The final stage is an additional 6-12 months in cement vats before releasing to the market. Bright red/cherry fruits, candied orange with hints of licorice and violet florals; textured and with exceptional structure, while the tingling acidity and focused tannins drive through to finish.

2014 Gattinara 'Vigna Molsino' DOCG

100% Nebbiolo. Sitting on the western side of the Gattinara commune, Molsino, along with good altitude (350-420 metres), has arguably the best exposure, being predominately south due to its natural amphitheatre shape. Fermentation and maceration are essentially the same as the Gattinara but for an additional 5-6 days. Oak maturation for both single crus is a little over 4 years, with an additional 12 months in cement vats before release. Chubbier, with a greater depth of dark choc/raisin fruit than Valferana, yet still tensile and focused. History would tell us that this is the cru for long term cellaring. In saying that, with a decent amount of airing and a decant, it shows its power and potential.

2014 Gattinara 'Vigna Valferana' DOCG
Usually $239.00 - Special Offer $225.00

100% Nebbiolo. Valferana sits towards the middle of the commune, marginally lower in altitude (320 metres) than Molsino and slightly more protected. This cru also faces more south/south-east, so these combined attributes make this cru not as structured and as taut as Molsino. Fermentation and maceration are the same as the Molsino cru, with oak maturation usually 4-6 months less than Molsino. Almost Burgundian in shape, with wonderful, persistent tannins, ironstone minerality, dried herbs, anise and bright, vivid fruits.

Domaine Leflaive



Domaine Leflaive is an estate that needs no introduction to lovers of the greatest wines of Burgundy. Anne-Claude was a pioneer of the biodynamics in France and it is fitting that under the domaines Leflaive & Associés negociant label, she continues to support the movement. Anne-Claude travelled around France to wine regions, meeting biodynamic growers and as a result, bottles wine from some of the top growers under the label.

2016 Puligny-Montrachet

A discreet application of wood easily allows the aromas of acacia blossom, lavender, citrus and the essence of white-fleshed fruit to be appreciated. The caressing and quite refined flavors exude a subtle salinity on the refreshing, firm and sneaky long finale. This should make for a very fine villages with a few years of cellaring. Outstanding.

2016 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Clavoillon'

Enough reduction is present to push the underlying fruit to the background. Otherwise there is a similar sense of energy to the slightly rounder and softer medium-bodied flavors that aren't quite as mineral-driven or complex but do offer fine persistence on the balanced finish. This should be approachable young if desired.

2016 Meursault 1er Cru 'Sous le Dos d'Ane'

There is ample citrus influence to the markedly floral-inflected nose that flashes hints of roasted nut and oak toast. The racy, intense and much stonier medium-bodied flavors possess fine delineation and excellent depth on the refined, focused and impressively long and youthfully firm finish. Lovely juice.

Domaine Ramonet



You could certainly make a case that Domaine Ramonet is the star producer of Chassagne-Montrachet. More than 15 hectares of vineyards are cultivated, with an overarching philosophy of preserving vine age wherever possible. Fermentations take place in stainless steel tanks, and are transferred to cask when nearly complete.New oak starts at less than 10% for the villages wines, around 25% for most of the premiers crus. As a result, the wines are invariably powerful and very complex, with layers of rich fruit yet retaining excellent finesse.

2015 Bouzeron Blanc

A super-fresh and attractively spicy and lemon rind-suffused nose precedes racy, intense and utterly delicious middle weight flavors that are bracingly refreshing on the clean, dry and focused saline-inflected finale where the only reproach is a very mild hint of warmth. Very warm vintages like 2015 is where aligoté often shines and this is certainly a good example of that success, and overall this would make for a great summer sipper.

2015 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Vergers'

Like the Morgeot, the softly oaky nose is noticeably reduced though not to the same degree; even so, it's enough to push the underlying fruit to the background at present and even extended aeration does not completely lift the funk. Otherwise there is excellent density to the delicious, caressing and sappy medium-bodied flavors that are less muscular than the Boudriotte but, as is typically the case, certainly finer on the bitter lemon-infused finish where the oak resurfaces. There is a touch of warmth and it's hard to predict where this is going as I like the underlying material but the wine seems somewhat disjointed at present. Ramonet has a fine track record with this wine so my score offers the benefit of the doubt that it will come together with time in bottle.

Evident though not intrusive wood sets off nicely elegant, pure and airy if ripe aromas of plum, dark currant and soft earth nuances. There is very good richness if perhaps not quite the usual refinement to the attractively textured medium weight flavors that exude a subtle minerality on the moderately complex if slightly warm finish. While obviously very young, this is prettier than it is deep and thus I would be inclined to hold this for at least a few years first in the hopes that the usual depth the CSJ develops with time.

Yarra Yering



Yarra Yering is one of the oldest and most beautiful vineyards in Victoria’s Yarra Valley with 28 hectares of vines located at the foot of the Warramate Hills. Established in 1969 by Dr Bailey Carrodus, the 1973 vintage saw production of the first vintage of Dry Red Wine No. 1 and Dry Red Wine No. 2. Yarra Yering quickly gained an international reputation for quality and individuality and paved the way for other Yarra Valley wineries. Those wines along with some new additions still sing today and solidify Yarra Yerings reputation as one of the best producers in Australia.

2016 Underhill Shiraz

Hand-picked from a 3.2ha block planted '73, whole berries fermented in half-tonne fermenters with stalk baskets, some batches with 20% whole bunches, one batch with 100%, matured for 12 months in French puncheons (30% new). Bright, deep colour; right from the outset, very different to the other wines in the release, with more spring in its step, more stalky/spice flavours behind black fruits, peppery notes inlaid into the broader mosaic of a constantly changing colour.

95% shiraz, 2% viognier, 2% mataro, 1% marsanne, whole berries open-fermented with some stalks added back in, some batches with frozen viognier skins on the bottom, some with marsanne skins, matured for 12 months in French barriques (30% new). The most highly aromatic bouquet with perfumed fruits and spices dancing on the forest floor, the palate a liquid expression of the bouquet. Alive with juicy, gently savoury tannins beating a beautiful tattoo, the finish drawn out by the peacock's tail of the multifaceted aftertaste.

2016 Dry Red No. 1

66% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot, 15% malbec, 3% petit verdot, hand-picked and berry-sorted, the cabernet crushed, the other varieties whole-berry fermented in half-tonne open fermenters, hand-plunged twice-daily, some of the cabernet with extended post-ferment maceration, matured separately in French oak (40% new) for 15 months. Profoundly juicy and rich, yet kept under tight control by the web of ripe tannins, oak part of the structure and texture but not flavour per se. It is a wine that you can sit with for a prolonged examination and discussion, and still not cover all its characteristics or ask all the questions.

2016 Carrodus Cabernet Sauvignon

Hand-picked, destemmed and crushed, open-fermented, twice-daily hand-plunging, gravity-filled to two Bordeaux-shaped barrels, one new for 18 months maturation. Restored my sanity after tasting a long string of miserable, green merlots and cabernets. Every aspect of this wine from vineyard to bottle is faultless, encouraging repeated visits to the glass making sure it is as good as it is. There is a cavalcade of perfectly ripe blue and black fruits running between rounded tannins, touches of leaf, herb and olive tapenade. Perfect balance at this stage is a rare thing with cabernet.
