Domaine Armand Rousseau

Crisis presents opportunity, and MW Wines was presented with an opportunity to grab a wonderful selection of wines from one of the greatest producers in the world, Domaine Armand Rousseau. Ordinarily, our small annual allocation never hits the market as it is offered first to our most loyal and long-serving customers. Securing this parcel of wines beyond our usual allocation means we can offer this more widely to our customer base. Of course, the cost of these wines reflect that they are some of the greatest in the world, but the prices we are offering are unrivalled globally.

Domaine Armand Rousseau ranks with Romanée-Conti, Leroy, Jacques-Frederic Mugnier and Georges Roumier that sit at the absolute top of the tree in Burgundy. Rousseau’s top wines are without a doubt amongst the most sought after wines in the world. The Domaine’s prestigious holdings are mostly in Gevrey-Chambertin, with the exception of Grand Cru Clos de la Roche in Morey-St. Denis. The Domaine controls a remarkable 8 hectares of Grand Crus including 6.25 acres in Chambertin and 3.45 acres in Clos de Bèze. Rousseau also owns 5.5 acres in the famed Premier Cru Clos St. Jacques, which accounts for 40% of itstotal acreage, and 100% of the 2.5-acre monopole, Grand Cru Clos des Ruchottes.

Fastidious attention to detail in both vineyard and winery (Rousseau even supplies its own oak to local coopers for absolute control over the finished product), ensures that each wine faithfully reflects its terroir. But most of all, the wines are stunning, delicious, impeccably balanced and age gracefully for decades. They are the epitome of power and complexity without weight. These are wines that elicit an emotional response and deserve a place in every serious Burgundy collector’s cellar.

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin
Usually $339 - Special Offer $295

This is much more deeply pitched and pungently earth with its array of very fresh red and dark berries that carry whiffs of earth and the sauvage. The rich, round and attractively textured medium-bodied flavors possess better depth and persistence as well as notably better underlying material. Note that this well-made effort is going to require at least a few years of patience first.

2016 Mazy-Chambertin Grand Cru
Usually $899 - Special Offer $849

A brooding and very taciturn nose features a plethora of Gevrey-like elements including humus, underbrush, game and a whiff of the sauvage, all of which add breadth to the red and dark currant-scented aromas. The medium weight plus sized flavors are at once more precise and more mineral-driven before culminating in a muscular, driving and beautifully complex if very firmly structured finale where a touch of wood surfaces. This is clearly built-to-age and is going to require at least 5 to 8 years first. Excellent.

2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 'Clos St Jacques'
Usually $1599 - Special Offer $1500

An elegant, pure and exuberantly spicy nose blends notes of super-fresh essence of red berries with wisps of earth, lavender and a background hint of oak. The equally pure middle weight flavors possess excellent mid-palate concentration along with an intense mineral streak while delivering stunningly good depth and persistence on the beautifully well-balanced finish. The '16 CSJ is a combination of finesse and punch and one that should age effortlessly for years.

2016 Chambertin Grand Cru
Usually $4299 - Special Offer $3900

As is often the case, this is more restrained than the Bèze and more deeply pitched as well with its cooler array of strikingly spicy red and dark currant aromas that are more heavily cut with freshly turned earth scents along with plenty of floral and sauvage influences, all of which is again trimmed in just enough oak influence to point out. The exceptionally rich, dense and highly energetic full-bodied flavors brim with both dry extract and a pungent minerality on the brilliantly complex and explosively long finish. This is a classic example of power without weight because despite the imposing size of the '16 Chambertin, the overall impression is one of harmony and grace. Among the 'big 4' of the Rousseau line-up, this is the one wine that might just surpass its 2015 equivalent.

2015 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Usually $899 - Special Offer $829

This is aromatically more elegant if perhaps not quite as ripe as the Cazetiers with its herbal tea, forest floor, red cherry and softly spicy and earthy aromas. The supple, round and delicious flavors possess a seductive mouth feel but with more size, weight and mid-palate concentration that helps to buffer the firmer tannic spine on the balanced and harmonious finale. Lovely and I like the complexity here.

2015 Chambertin Grand Cru Usually $4499, not available separately.

Here too there is just enough oak to mention but once again it's not really enough to impair the purity of the distinctly cool and ultra-spicy red currant, underbrush, sandalwood, lilac and plenty of earth aromas. The rich, intense and overtly muscular big-bodied flavors possess a similar level of minerality that is borderline pungent and it informs the explosively long, firm and very serious finish. This notably powerful, but not really austere effort, displays magnificent potential and if it develops its usual degree of complexity over time it should merit the upper end of my projected range. But as structured and firm as it is, I suspect that this will drink well after only 6 to 8 years of age thanks to the incredible abundance of dry extract.

2013 Chambertin 'Clos de Beze' Grand Cru Usually $2299, not available separately.

Subtle if not invisible wood serves as a backdrop for the mildly reduced nose so again do yourself a favor and decant this if you're going to crack one before 2020 or so. There is knock-out intensity to the gorgeously textured and mineral-inflected flavors that are imposingly scaled yet there is not even a hint of heaviness on the restrained, delineated and explosively long and mouth coating finale. This is a breathtakingly robust and powerful Bèze that is going to require all of 20 years to reach it zenith.
