100 Point Barolo from E. Pira Chiara Boschis

by Hugh French | Sep 05, 2020

Staggering new release Barolo
from E. Pira &Figli Chiara Boschis

Chiara Boschis is one of the most important winemakers to the 'Barolo Revolution'. Her crus are highly praised and in even higher demand. These 2016's are probably her best yet, and include the 100 point 'Via Nuova'.

These are the best wines Chiara Boschis and her brother, Giorgio, have ever made. I was just blown away by what I tasted. The purity and class of the 2016 is magnificent. The 2016s were whole berry crushed and spent 7-10 days on the skins. Malolactic fermentation took place in steel, after which the wines were racked into oak between December 2016 and January 2017. The Mosconi is aged entirely in cask, the Via Nuova is done half in barrique and half in cask, while the Cannubi is done mostly in cask.

2019 Dolcetto d'Alba 'Chiara Boschis' DOC
Usually $48 - Special Offer $43

The Dolcetto grape we produce comes from our own vineyards, where we find soils typical of the Elveziano territory (of an older formation, calcareous-clayey with a faded color towards very light gray and pink. In alternation we also find siliceous sandstones, carbonate of calcium and iron.) The color is intense ruby red with purple reflections. The persistent floral and fruity aromas of violet and small red fruits give it a pleasant immediacy. The contained tannins and the balanced and elegant structure make it the "everyday wine" par excellence, satisfying without being too demanding.
Producer Notes, E. Pira & Figli

2018 Barbera d'Alba Superiore 'Chiara Boschis' DOC

Our Barbera d'Alba Superiore derives from the vinification of Barbera grapes, coming from our own vineyards. These are vineyards planted on Elvezian soils, which give structure and elegance enhanced by aging in wood for about 1 year. The color is intense ruby red, tending to purple and purple. On the nose there are vinous hints of red and black fruits such as cherry, plum and blackberry. The palate is full and robust with a pleasant taste of the typical red and black fruits, and a pleasant sensation of freshness.
Producer Notes, E. Pira & Figli

2016 Barolo 'Cannubi Chiara Boschis' DOCG
The 2016 Barolo Cannubi is beautifully perfumed and gracious. Sweet red berry, kirsch, mint, tobacco and dried flowers all lift from the glass. A wine of total finesse, the 2016 is just stunning in its beauty and arresting sensuality. Time in the glass brings out the wine's silkiness and captivating inner perfume. This is such a fabulous expression of Cannubi. What a wine!
98 Points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com

2016 Barolo 'Via Nuova Chiara Boschis' DOCG
In my opinion, the 2016 Barolo Via Nuova is the single greatest Barolo Chiara Boschis has made in her storied career. A monumental, thrilling wine, the Via Nuova captures all the best the vintage had to give. Explosive in the glass, with stunning aromatic depth, the 2016 is drop-dead gorgeous from the very first taste. Dark macerated cherry, lavender, spice, menthol and rose petal are kicked up a few notches from underlying veins of acidity and tannin that give the wine its energy and drive. The 2016 is a wine of extraordinary harmony, purity and finesse with an eternal finish. The 2016 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of seven plots: Terlo, Liste, Paiagallo, Ravera di Monforte, Mosconi, Gabutti and Baudana.
100 Points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com

2016 Barolo 'Mosconi Chiara Boschis' DOCG
The 2016 Barolo Mosconi is a gorgeous wine made all the more remarkable given that Mosconi can't really be said to be a top-level site. Dark and imposing, the 2016 captures all the breadth and tannic clout that are such signatures of this site. This is an especially brooding, virile Barolo, but Chiara and Giorgio Boschis clearly brought out all the best the vineyard had to give.
96Points, Antonio Galloni, vinous.com
