After taking the reigns at Bannockburn in 2015, Matt Holmes has steered the Geelong based producer to its former glory and the current release is absolutely stunning! Previously working vintages all across the winemaking world, this is technically his second stint at Bannockburn, formerly working with winemaker at the time, Michael Glover in 2005. Now in full control of the winery, Matt looks to take advantage of his depth and breadth of experience and take Bannockburn into a very secure future producing delicious wines.

Matt's latest release is a masterful selection of estate and single-vineyard Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz. The Chardonnays show energy and a raciness, balancing rich fruit character whilst the reds are paired-back, allowing the wines vibrant purity to be complemented by a deft touch in the winery.

2019 Chardonnay

True to style with a creamy flavour, but whipped into shape by lime juice and tight acidity. There’s a little spice, a sea spray and white flower freshness, white nectarine, firm and flinty texture, and a spiced biscuit-y finish of excellent length. Dry and glossy. Tense but generous. It’s a wine of contrasts and intensity. An excellent release here.

2017 S.R.H. Chardonnay

The 2017 was wild-fermented in French oak puncheons and hogsheads (25% new), and then spent 11 months on lees with no stirring, undergoing full malolactic fermentation. Sulphur was only added before bottling in February 2018. Our clients won't need reminding of the energy and layered definition of this special Victorian vintage—here you get all the power, depth and complex stone fruit/saline intensity that we expect of this site, with the added freshness and drive of a great vintage.

2018 Pinot Noir

It’s a bright, spicy, slightly earthy/twiggy number, all dark juicy cherry and crunchy redcurrant. A cool ‘mineral’ feel to the acidity, lovely and glassy, fine graphite tannin, sweet and sour cherries, strawberry, a pleasing sappy tang and savoury slightly sordid undergrowth character, and a fresh clean finish of excellent persistence. Comes up very well in the glass, and while I wasn’t quite sure of it at first, it won me over in quick time.

Predominantly clone MV6, plus 114, 115 and 777 planted '76, '97 and '07. The batches were wild-fermented with 20% whole bunches, matured for 12 months in French hogsheads (30% new). Plum, cherry, bright acidity and fine, persistent tannins will bring pleasure at any time along the development trail.

2018 De La Terre Pinot Noir

The 2018 was fermented wild with 10% whole-bunch and spent two weeks on skins. Maturation was for 12 months in French oak hogsheads (20% new), before blending and bottling in early 2019. This is a superb example of this wine, arguably the best we’ve seen. Perfumed, deep yet superbly sculpted and layered with wonderful, cherry-cola fruit and loads of spice. You see the purity and brightness of the vintage, and the evolution in the vines really shines through.

2018 Serre Pinot Noir

This significantly earlier bottling (as compared to that in previous eras) has brought Matt Holmes’ Serré a certain juicy primacy to offset the vineyard’s natural power, density and structure. This is a really bright and juicy expression of Serré, still with the power you might expect, but with more energy, vibrancy and jubeyness. There’s lots of vibrant red and blue fruits, some floral notes and a translucent, pure and classy palate. A superb example.

2017 Shiraz

The 2017 was wild fermented with just 10% whole bunches and spent two weeks on skins before being pressed, settled and racked to French oak puncheons (20% new) for 13 months élevage. It's a harmonious and super-seductive expression of this wine with fleshy plum and blackcurrant fruit and hints of olive, black pepper and spice. A fine tannin structure underpins it all. A superb release of this wine.

2017 De La Roche Shiraz

The 2017 was wild-fermented with 70% whole bunches and pressed off after two weeks on skins. The wine was then raised in a mix of old and new (30%) hogsheads.
A super-complex, savoury, tapenade, ferrous, roasted meat and peppercorn-noted nose leads to an equally savoury yet also seductive, smooth and textural palate. Really velvety even if the finish is sappy and super vibrant. Such a unique and delicious wine in the firmament of Australian Shiraz/Syrah.
