Sorrenberg

In 1986, Beechworth was merely a burgeoning wine region. However, Barry and Jan Morey recognised its potential and started planting their winery, Sorrenberg. Rather than focusing on using large amounts of manipulation or trendy winemaking techniques, the Moreys prioritise the health of their vines and the soil.

Barry and Jan have flown the flag steadfastly for biodynamic viticulture and reasonable minimum intervention winemaking for some time now. While during the early days the pair have acknowledged the challenges they faced, they feel like the care and work they imparted into the land is now being returned to them. This long-term commitment to the ecosystem has resulted in consistent, delicious wines of real character. It's of no surprise that Sorrenberg now has an extremely loyal following. "The 2023 Gamay hails from a cool and wet vintage (horrendously low yielding at Sorrenberg) in Beechworth, and the wine aromatically leads with rose petals, sour cherry, star anise, scratched blood orange rind, Pink Lady apple, strawberry and cranberry. In the mouth, the wine is gently minty, spicy and clear, with a pure flow of very fine fruit and chalky tannins. If this were a painting, it would be of watercolor, not oil, and it's important to know this when seeking to understand this wine in the context of other Sorrenberg Gamay vintages... I like the philosophy slightly more than the wine this year: the producer has such a clear understanding of their site and region that I am prepared to back that to the hilt. A lovely wine, it's a quiet iteration in 2023."
