Buisson-Charles - Powerfully Pure Meursault

Nestled in the heart of Meursault, Domaine Buisson-Charles has become the standard bearer for true Meursault. Family owned for several generations, Buisson-Charles is now run by Catherine Buisson, her husband, Patrick Essa and since 2020, their son Louis Essa, who has taken the reins of vineyard management and winemaking.

They nurture their vines organically, shunning the crutches of chaptalization, acidification, and batonnage during vinification. Vineyards are ploughed by horse, and increasingly, Louis is experimenting with different pruning and training regimes to adapt to the increasing challenges of climate change. Eschewing current trends of early picking and extensive batonnage, picking dates are deliberately postponed to attain perfect physiological ripeness. This approach results in wines that transcend the ordinary, embracing opulence without compromising on acidity and tension, wines which truly reflect their underlying terroir.

Their vineyard holdings are centred around the Domaine in Meursault, with several other parcels around the Cote, d’Or, particularly in Volnay and Pommard. There are many old vines, most over 40 years old and some over 100 years old. When touring their parcels, it is noteworthy that the life in the vineyard and the health of the vines always seems to be starkly better than their immediate neighbours – proof of the fastidious attention that is paid to the vines.

2023 Bourgogne Aligote 'Hors Classe'

"From old vines that are pruned very short to limit their yields, the 2023 Bourgogne Aligoté Hors Classe offers up aromas of pear and apple mingled with notions of white flowers and pastry cream. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, it's rich and ample, with a generous core of fruit. Vinified in 350-liter barrels, it's one of the more ambitious Aligoté bottlings produced along the Côte today."

"This too is noticeably phenolic in character with its aromas of mostly pear and apple compote that is laced with lemon nuances. The delicious and vibrant flavors aren't quite as dense but they are a bit finer, particularly on the citrus-tinged finale that is also clean and agreeably dry."

"Once again there is a prominent phenolic character but with more spice and floral nuances that add a touch of elegance. The notably denser flavors are rich to the point of opulence while coating the palate with sappy dry extract that also serves to buffer the slightly firmer acid spine. This is lovely for its level and worth a look."

"A slightly riper, and ever-so-vaguely exotic, nose freely offers up its aromas of white peach, orange peel and acacia blossom. The exceptionally rich, indeed opulent, medium-bodied flavors possess impressive density while exhibiting solid power on the balanced finish that is also quite tightly wound. This is excellent, particularly for its level, and a wine that's going to require at least some patience."

The rich, generously proportioned and sleeker, though not denser, middle weight flavors do flash more evident minerality on the seductive yet powerful finish. This beautifully well-balanced effort should easily repay up to a decade of keeping. Recommended."

There is a bit more volume to the slightly bigger and richer middle weight flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the notably more persistent finish that is agreeably dry and clean. This harmonious effort could use better depth so a few years of forbearance are suggested."

"An expressive and beautifully well-layered nose speaks of carnation and acacia blossom along with notes of white peach, passion fruit and a hint of petrol. I very much like the texture of the rich, generously proportioned and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors that culminate in a bone-dry, strikingly long and overtly citrus-inflected finale where the only reproach is a touch of warmth. This is impressive."

"Here too there is a suggestion of the exotic to the aromas of white peach, tangerine, mineral reduction and once again, a hint of phenolic character. This medium weight flavors aren't quite as dense though they are just a bit finer while offering fine length and an almost palpable sense of minerality on the balanced and youthfully austere finish that, interestingly enough given that this is a premier cru, isn't quite as structured."

This is terrific and one of the Buisson-Charles' wines that always ages exceptionally well."

"A discreet application of wood sets off slightly riper and vaguely exotic aromas of orange peel, jasmine tea and white orchard fruit. There is more size, weight and volume but less precision and minerality to the medium-bodied flavors that deliver solid length. This is certainly pretty but it too needs to develop better depth so a few years of keeping are recommended."
