International Women's Day - Vanya Cullen's Diana Madeline & the Albino Rocca Sisters

These wines are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or by or calling us on 03 9419 6990.

    Cullen

The growing season for 2016 Diana Madeline was favourable with good spring rains and warm conditions. After three vintages of tiny yields we are delighted with this vintage giving us a wine of elegance, brilliant colour and purity of fruit. All the classic Cullen Vineyard Wilyabrup flavours are there: cassis, violets, chocolate and ironstone.

    Vanya Cullen, Winemaker

    2016 Diana Madeline Cabernet Merlot
    $120

A blend of 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 1% Malbec and 1% Petit Verdot. 100% from the Cullen Vineyard.

'Spicy, intense with a polished texture and some balsam notes. Not nearly ready. Put it away!'
    Jancis Robinson, 18 points

Very deep, bright purple/red colour leads into a sweetly ripe, rich berry and violet bouquet which is fruit-driven, vibrant and fresh. Blueberries and herbs. Wonderfully elegant and piercingly intense. An outstanding wine.
97 points. Huon Hooke, The Real Review

    Albino Rocca

Not to be confused with the tricky 2014 Barolo vintage that suffered huge volumes of rain and early summer hail, Barbaresco managed to escape all of this enjoying a wonderful long growing season. A spectacular Barbaresco vintage ensued producing exceptional vibrant and balanced wines. 2014 was also the second vintage solely made by the hands of the Rocca sisters, Paola,Monica and Daniela, and it is clear that the estate is now one of the best producers of Barbaresco in the region. We are also happy to be able to offer some of the fresher new wines such as the Dolcetto d'Alba and Barbera d'Alba from the amazing 2016 and 2015 vintages. Bright, exquisitely perfumed and high in drinkability, these are perfect for the cooler Autumn evenings.

    2016 Albino Rocca Dolcetto DOC
    $30

Now under Screw cap. This is reared only in tank to preserve purity. Albino Rocca's Dolcetto d'Alba is drawn from a single vineyard in Barbaresco in the Ronchi cru. So it's a very serious location with a first-rate east/south east exposure for the most part. The vines are also 30-40 years old and thanks to these mature vines, and the sensible yields they offer, this wine offers more intensity and texture than your garden variety of this wine style. It also doesn't hurt that 2016 is an outstanding year. It's sweetly scented with red cherry and wild blackberry notes, while the palate is juicy and textured and dripping with the same, fresh fruit notes as well as a bramble like freshness. Wonderful purity, bright as a button and everything in its right place. Shows the class of this superb vintage.

    Bibendum, Importer

2016 Albino Rocca Barbera d'Alba DOC
    $32

Albino Rocca's Barbera d'Alba is another small volume cuvée, drawn from a single parcel of vines, planted in 2004 and rooted in the clay and limestone soils of San Rocco Seno d'Elvio, just outside Alba. This Barbera is raised entirely in tank and is bottled early in order to keep things vibrant and fresh. Again, the brilliance of the vintage shines through. Blue fruited, intense, round yet fresh, with a long anise close.
    Bibendum, Importer

    2015 Albino Rocca Nebbiolod'Alba DOC
    $44

The Nebbiolo d'Alba comes from a steep, 1.5-hectare parcel of vines in the commune of Alba, on the edge of the Barbaresco area. Like the vast majority of the Rocca wines, it derives from a single site - this time the renowned Montersino vineyard (again in the San Rocco Seno d'Elvio subzone at the border of Barbaresco). The vines here are aged between 15 and 60 years old and the wine was matured for 12 months in large Austrian and German, Stockinger oak casks. From another outstanding recent vintage, this is stunning and a remarkable value - it's ripe, layered with juicy fruit and loads of fine structure. There are notes of dried fruits and flowers as well as hints of leather and wood varnish. The finish is long, pure and moreish with the fine tannins making it a wonderful food match.
    Bibendum, Importer

100% Nebbiolo, 10 days on the skins and aged in large barrels for one year.

Just mid ruby with orange tinges. A little meaty and closed, with perfumed fruit underneath. Wonderful lightness on the palate, yet bags of flavour as well as fine tannins.
    Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 17 points

    2016 Albino Rocca Nebbiolod'Alba DOC
    $44

90% Nebbiolo, 10% Cabernet Franc. Stainless steel only.

Deep crimson. Violet and raspberry. Quite rich yet balanced with lots of grainy tannins and sweet fruit on the finish. Long and intense.
    Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 16 points

2014 Albino Rocca Barbaresco DOCG 'Montersino'
    $72

The 2014 Barbaresco Montersino is a very pretty, nuanced wine, within the context of young Barbaresco that still need a bit of time to be at its best. Sweet red cherry, mint, white pepper and expressive floral notes all lift out of the glass. Bright and driven, with pointed tannins, the 2014 offers a good bit of energy, all in a very classic, mid-weight style. The Montersino is one of the lighter, more graceful and aromatically expressive wines in the range.

    Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91 points

Very pale crimson. Intensely perfumed. A spread of vegy flavours across the palate. Lots of acidity but good assertive fruit without anything too sweet. Very clean finish. Still lots of treacly chew.
    Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com, 17.5 points

    2014 Albino Rocca Barbaresco DOCG
    $86

The 2014 Barbaresco opens with lovely aromatics. Sweet tobacco, licorice, smoke, mint and dried herbs give the wine its distinctive perfume and add nuance to a palette of dark-hued Nebbiolo fruit. Time in the glass works wonders to bring out the wine's freshness. I would prefer to drink the 2014 over the next decade or so given its mid-weight structure. This is a terrific introduction to the Albino Rocca Barbarescos. Fruit is sourced from the vineyards San Rocco and Meruzzano, plus young vines in Ovello and Cottà.

    Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 89 points

2014 Albino Rocca Barbaresco DOCG 'Ovello Vigna Loreto'
    $95

The 2014 Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto is powerful and imposing out of the glass, with serious mid-palate intensity, depth and volume to match. A rush of sweet red cherry, plum, menthol, rose petal and blood orange give the 2014 its somewhat exotic personality. Readers should be prepared to give the 2014 at least a few years to shed some formidable tannin. Today, it is decidedly austere.

    Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 93 points

Mid ruby with orange tinges. Cherry and strawberry fruit that seems a little pushed for ripeness. Hint of liquorice with bittersweet tannins on the finish and lifted strawberry fruit.

    Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 16 points

2014 Albino Rocca Barbaresco DOCG 'Ronchi'
    $99

The 2014 Barbaresco Ronchi is austere and tightly wound today, with huge tannins that enshroud the fruit and make the wine hard to read. There is no shortage of intensity, that much is obvious. Whether the 2014 will find a measure of finesse over time is less certain. Today, it is the least available of these five Albino Rocca 2014 Barbarescos. Hints of white pepper, blood orange, star anise and rose petal all grow in the glass as the 2014 gradually starts to unfurl and reveal its personality.

    Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94 points

Relatively dark crimson for 2014 Barbaresco. Heady nose. Then rather charming roses. Some sweetness. Well put together. Satisfying and complete. Long.
    Jancis Robinson, jancisrobinson.com, 17.5 points

2014 Albino Rocca Barbaresco DOCG 'Angelo'
    $185

The 2014 Barbaresco Angelo is a blend of 50% Ronchi, 25% Loreto and 25% Montersino fruit that sees 40 days on the skins. A powerful, explosive wine, the 2014 possesses terrific depth and volume, with plenty of structural underpinning. The blend of sites works nicely, even though it is quite evident that the tannic structure of Ronchi is one of the wine's principal signatures. Readers will have to be patient with the 2014. Even so, there is quite a bit to look forward to. The Angelo, a tribute to the late Angelo Rocca, is the only Barbaresco in the range done with a classic submerged cap fermentation, an approach that seems so well suited to this fruit.

    Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 94 points

Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Balsamic, lifted cherry nose with a hint of cardamom skin. Tightly wound fruit with mouth-filling, powdery tannins and iron notes on the finish. Elegant and with plenty of racy acidity.
    Walter Speller, jancisrobinson.com, 17+ points
