2014 E. Pira & Figli new releases & VPs from Quinta do Noval

    by Dave Shoobert | May 31, 2018

2014 E. Pira & Figlinew releases & VPs from Quinta do Noval

We absolutely adore the E. Pira & Figli wines of Chiara Boschis. In a relatively short period of time (by Barolo standards anyway) she has created wines of elegance with surprising generosity that age as gracefully as any from Piedmont. She has become the queen of the vineyard devoting insane amounts of time to vineyard management which might explain why her wines are so delicious. In short she is to Barolo what Ghislaine Barthod is to Burgundy and long may it continue. There's an old saying in the world of wine that in tough years you should drink good producers. Well 2014 was challenging but this lady is a rock star. Our allocation was small but we can't recommend these wines highly enough.

Quinta do Noval (speaking of rock stars) are at the top of the tree in Portugal and have been making consistently great Vintage Ports for decades. It's probably only due to the category being less sought after than the wines of Burgundy, Bordeaux and Barolo that they've remained this under valued for so long. Only a small volume of these wines makes it to our shores so this is your chance to grab a few bottles of something that'll outlive you for the cellar (we suggest drinking it before then though).

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or by or calling us on 03 9419 6990.

    E. Pira & Figli

Chiara Boschismust be one of the most glamorous people in Barolo. Armed with a family history of making Barolo and a degree in economics, she started off as early as 1990 as one of the very few women in a male-dominated profession to make her own interpretation of what Nebbiolo should be: powerful and yet elegant and a little flamboyant. Her estate, called E Pira, was acquired by her family after the last male descendant, Luigi Pira, died in 1980, and none of his sisters felt capable of taking it on.

2014 Barolo 'Cannubi Chiara Boschis' DOCG
    $200

The 2014 Barolo Cannubi from Chiara Boschis is soft, supple and surprisingly giving at this early stage. Exotic spice and citrus overtones add to wine's considerable allure. Succulent red cherry, cinnamon, orange peel and rose petal notes all lift from the glass in this gracious, sublime Barolo. This is one of the more accessible 2014s I tasted during my fall trip. Given its midweight structure, the 2014 Cannubi may turn out to have a relatively short life, but then again, Nebbiolo often surprises. Today, the wine is exceptionally beautiful.

2014 Barolo 'Mosconi Chiara Boschis' DOCG
    $175

A wine of power and breadth, the 2014 Barolo Mosconi has all of the textural depth that is typical of this Monforte site. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, licorice and incense are some of the many notes that fill out the wine's generous frame. It will be interesting to see if the 2014 comes together a bit more fully with time in bottle. Today, it is decidedly virile and a touch monolithic.
    Antonio Galloni,Vinous- 93points

2014 Barolo 'Via Nuova Chiara Boschis' DOCG
    $155

The 2014 Barolo Via Nuova is a blend of six sites - Liste, Terlo, Ravera di Monforte, Mosconi, Gabutti and Baudana - all of which are bottled as vineyard designates by other growers. There is something about the art of the blend that can be convincing, especially in challenging vintages such as 2014. The Via Nuova is a veritable explosion of aromas, flavors and sensations. Super-ripe red cherry, plum, kirsch, cinnamon and lavender all rush from the glass. Sweet, perfumed and beautifully layered throughout, the 2014 Via Nuova is all finesse.

    Quinta do Noval

Since the ’94 vintage, the first under Christian Seely, the Quinta do Noval Vintage Ports have always been rated amongst the best of the region, often rivalling Nacional in blind tastings. As both Robert Parker and James Suckling have noted, the Quinta do Noval 1994 Vintage Port was the best VP from the domaine for decades and each VP release since then has been outstanding. Meanwhile the Tawniesand the Late Bottle Vintage are now leaders of their respective categories. The Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage Ports (often containing the declassified Nacional and Quinta VP’s in undeclared vintages like 2005) today offer wonderful value for money.

2012Quinta do Noval Late Bottle Vintage (Unfiltered)
    $50

The quality of the fruit is so immediately apparent with Noval – fresh and ripe, with none of the overcooked ‘Douro bake’ that can make some ports rather dead. A masterclass in freshness and nuance in a big, full-bodied structure. For a LBV, this is difficult to beat.
    Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com -17/20

2001Quinta do Noval Silval Vintage Port
    $58

Brisk back into a more plump, rich generous mode with lots of fat, sweet black fruit and a certain earhty, meaty depth too. The palate has great sweetness and richness. There's a rich fig quality to the fruit here that is very mouth-filling and sweet, but those supple, chocolate and spicy tannins add lots of richness and structure.

2015 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port
    $155

Dense, compressed nose that nonetheless has coffee bean, smoke, black cherry and spice. Glides across the palate – so silken and articulate! Long, intense fruit – yet without heaviness. If the best books are unputdownable, then this is unspitoutable. Sheer pleasure – but it needs time to decompress and fulfil its potential complexity..
    Richard Hemming MW, JancisRobinson.com -18.5/20

2007Quinta do Noval Duoro Red Blend
    $105

Displays intense aromas of red plum and dark cherry, with finely chiseled flavours to match that are joined by briary notes and hints of mint, savory herd and Asian spice. The long, lush and powerful finish is quite creamy. An elegant red.
