Wines from Produttori del Barbaresco, 2017 Frankland Estate Rieslings, 2017 S.C. Pannell Grenache and new release Pinots from Burn Cottage
This week's offer is jam packed with some seriously good wines from both home and abroad. To kick off there's the super pretty and fragrant 2014 Barbaresco from Produttori del Barbaresco plus the 2013 single vineyard Crus from Asili, Paje and Montefico. 2014 was an awesome year for Barbaresco as they missed the rain and hail that hit Barolo, and2013 vintage was hailed as one of the great vintages in Piemonte.
From closer to home we have Frankland Estate, arguablyWestern Australia's greatest producer of riesling, plus a couple of sexy grenache's from S.C. Pannell. Finally we head across the ditch for some deep intense pinot greatness. Burn Cottage have been rocking Central Otago since they purchased their stunning 24 hectare property at the foot of the Pisa Ranges in 2002.

Produttori del Barbaresco
I was blown away by these wines from the Produttori del Barbaresco. The straight 2014 Barbaresco is sublime, while the 2013 Riservas are off the charts...All of the wines are deeply experessive with regards to site and vintage. In other words it doesn't get much better than this.
Antonio Galloni, Vinous
The 2014 Barbaresco is fabulous. Lifted in the glass, with striking perfume and captivating translucency, the Produttori's Barbaresco captures all the elements that make this vintage so compelling. Today, the 2014 is very, very young. What stands out most is its textural finesse and balance. It will be a number of years before the aromas and flavors are fully expressive. The only thing that might come as a surprise is the touch of new cask in this wine. Otherwise, the 2014 is one of the finest editions of the straight Barbaresco I can remember tasting, not to mention a superb example of how magnificent this vintage is in Barbaresco. Don't miss it. As a postscript, the Produttori will release 2014 Riservas as well. Drinking window: 2022-2042

2013 Riserva 'Asili'
Absolutely stunning in every way, the 2013 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is also the most complete wine in the lineup at this stage. Floral, lifted and exquisitely beautiful, the 2013 speaks to regal elegance and finesse above all else. Silky tannins add to an impression of total sensuality. At this stage, there is almost no impression of tannin, as the wine is so impeccably balanced. The 2013 shuts down quickly in the glass, which may suggest it is headed for a long period of dormancy. Readers who can find the Asili should not miss it, as it is truly sublime. Drinking window: 2025-2043

2013 Riserva 'Montefilco'
The Barbaresco Riserva Montefico shows all the energy and focus that is typical of this great site, but there is so much depth to the fruit that some of the more angular contours have been softened. Bright saline-infused notes lead to wild flowers and an exotic melange of red fruits in this beautifully delineated, vivid Barbaresco. All the elements are simply in the right place.

2013 Riserva 'Paje'
The 2013 Barbaresco Riserva Pajé is simply fabulous. Sweet floral notes soar from the glass as this deep, beautifully resonant Barbaresco shows off its compelling inner sweetness and total sense of poise. The flavors are deep yet fresh, with wonderful fragrance and impeccable balance throughout. A wine of total harmony, the 2013 is going to be nearly impossible to resist young. The 2013 is one of the best versions of the Pajé I can remember tasting. Drinking window: 2023-2043

Frankland Estate is to be revered and celebrated in equal measure. Quietly going about its work, it continues to delight and surprise.Visits to Great Southern and time spent with winemakers Hunter Smith and Brian Kent and viticulturist Elizabeth Smith have cemented my opinion Frankland Estate is one of Australia's greatest wine producers with a thirst for excellence.

2017 Single Vineyard Poison Hill Riesling
Poison Hill has unique white clay and weathered quartz soils. The wine making here was pretty classic too. Perfumed, talcy, gently textural and dry with a resonant palate – lovely back palate linger.

2017 Single Vineyard Isolation Ridge Riesling
Riesling from the Isolation Ridge Vineyard. It commands respect. Essence of Riesling. Floral and generally pretty but brilliant with fruit intensity. Lime blossom, honeysuckle, slate and then a gorgeous burst of gunsmoke-infused citrus. Ultra dry. Top class.

2017 Smith Cullam Riesling
It’s delicious for starters. It’s intense with lime and orange oil-like flavour and it boasts an excellent start, a good middle and a terrific finish. It begs you to come back for more but it drives long through the finish too; it’s quality all the way. Sweet-edged but thrilling. Quite beautiful.
A very cool, mild and stress-free vintage for vines, not winemakers! Good winter and spring rains were followed by a very mild, long summer. The results are wines with ample fruit complexity and great natural acidity. Most important however is the delicious fruit freshness and balance.
Stephan Pannell, Winemaker
2017 Old McDonald Grenache
It’s pretty, kind of rosy in perfume, a little bit juicy, but also dry and beautifully structured. There’s fine insistent tannin giving it shape and texture, almost to Nebbiolo character with its gentle brick dust grip, red fruit and cherry, a layer of spice, new leather and scrub herb, and a long cool, composed finish. Flat out beautiful. Succulence with a serious nature. Bravo.

2017 Smart Grenache
A finer boned, musky and spicy expression of Grenache here. It’s medium bodied, almost strict in structure, with firm dry tannin, pitch-perfect acidity giving energy, fresh raspberry and something like black tea, or that elusive ‘mineral’ thing, a pleasant perfumed herb character as a counterpoint, and a crisp and very long finish, closing with gustatory tannin and subtle bitterness. Wow

Remarkable site that the fruit is grown on here. Verdant, buzzy with Bambi-like scenes of animals and flowers and insects and stuff. Biodynamic farming, loads of care, a selected place to grow great grapes. Good ingredients. Clever winemaker, Claire Mullholland, and in the mix the wonderful consultant in Ted Lemon from Littorai, California.

2016 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir
Enticing layers of floral, berry and spice notes complement earthy aromatics of wet stone and black tea. With time in the glass, deeper savoury notes and richness from the whole cluster use emerge. This vintage has shown wonderful finesse from the outset, with silky texture and an attractive seamlessness throughout. Focused and very elegant, the wine has fine persistent tannins extending the harmonious finish. Cellaring for up to 7-10 years
Claire Mulholland, Winemaker.
2015 Moonlight Race Pinot Noir
Wonderful perfume. Smells cherry-like, savoury, faint dusty spice, touch of clove, earthiness, undergrowth. Really a whole lot going on. Texture is firm, tight, subtle and cool in fruit flavours, long. Long. It’s elegant yet shows off savouriness, tannins are shapely and succulent. It’s restrained, needs time, but offers so much for serious pinot lovers. Yep. 94 points.
