New Arrival 2016 Red and White Burgundy

    by Hugh French | Aug 10, 2018

New Arrival 2016 Red and White Burgundy

Just in at MW Wines is our latest shipment of Red and White Burgundy from some great producers.

On the red side of proceedings,we've got two monumental wines of Sylvain Cathiard alongside wines from the excellent Domaine Lignier-Michelot and Domaine Faiveley.

For the whites, we have pretty much all major white producing areas of Burgundy represented. Firstly, a star of the Cote de Beaune Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, next to the Chablis Grand Cru 'Les Clos' from Domaine Christian Moreau and even the Maconnais side project from legend Dominique Lafon, Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon.

Despite some challenging conditions, the Burgundies from 2016 are incredible with all producers marvelling at the quality of fruit that made it into the winery. Unfortunately, the difficulty for the vintage lies in the ultra-low yields with all reporting losses, some of up to 90%. Such low yields and high-quality mean they won't hang around for long, so act quickly and secure yourself these spectacular wines.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only.

    Sylvain Cathiard

Sébastian Cathiard was stoic about the frost losses suffered in 2016, noting that "they were bad but it easily could have been worse... Unfortunately, what the frost didn't destroy the mildew came close and particularly so in my parcels of Bourgogne and Vosne villages. In total, my production in 2016 will be off about 35%. After those two problems it was essentially smooth sailing and I picked everything in three days between the 28th and 30th of September. We were able to pick so quickly because the fruit was not only clean but there just wasn't much of it... Overall, I really like the style of 2016 as it's vibrant and fresh and I think the wines will drink well young and with age." The young Cathiard continues to impress and it would be fair to say his 2016s are, generally speaking, excellent...

    2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru 'Aux Murgers'
Usually $499 - Special Offer $465 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

...Restrained medium weight flavors possess excellent structural ripeness as well as fine size, weight and power on the intense, harmonious and mouth coating finish. This concentrated effort is a classic Murgers of muscle and power but no rusticity. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 69
    91-93 points

A more expressive nose is also exceptionally fresh and cool while offering a lovely blend of spicy red and blue pinot fruit that is cut with ample floral elements. The vibrant, intense and chiseled medium weight flavors also exude plenty of minerality on the saline, balanced and strikingly persistent finish. Once again there is terrific depth though this is even more firmly structured and overall this is a wine that's going to require some discipline to allow it at least 6 to 8 years of bottle age. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 69
    91-94 points

    ...................................................

    Domaine Lignier-Michelot

Virgile Lignier's take on the 2016 vintage was that "just like the 2015 vintage, I would sign up for this quality every year if that was possible. However I wouldn't want to sign up for the much more complicated growing season...Overall though, we were much luckier than many communes as I would put our losses at no more than 10%... The fruit was solidly ripe as potential alcohols came in at between 12.5 and 13.4%... As to the wines, I really like the quality but what I like even more is the style of the 2016s as they're super-fresh and wonderfully transparent. Given the growing season, the quality of the wines is a happy surprise." I agree with Lignier that his 2016s are indeed excellent and they are notably better than the average quality I found in 2016...

    2016 Chambolle-Musigny Vieilles Vignes
Usually $149 - Special Offer $139 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A more layered nose combines notes of violet, plum and dark cherry with those of earth and spice. There is a lovely texture to the intense and concentrated middle weight flavors that deliver fine length on the stony finale. This isn't a Chambolle of lace and grace but it doesn't lack for complexity or character. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 69
    89-91 points

    2016 Morey-Saint-Denis Vieilles Vignes
Usually $149 - Special Offer $139 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A more restrained and somewhat less elegant nose offers up more deeply pitched aromas are comprised by notes of plum, black cherry and spice. There is both excellent power and mid-palate concentration to the sappy and mouth coating middle weight plus flavors that flash a taut muscularity on the clean, dry and wonderfully long finish. This offers excellent quality for a villages level Morey. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 69
    89-92 points

2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 'En La Rue de Vergy'
Usually $149 - Special Offer $139 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A perfumed, cool and airy array is composed of red raspberry along with ample amounts of both earth and floral elements. The medium-bodied flavors are sleeker and more mineral-driven as well while delivering sneaky good length on the saline finish. This isn't as dense but it's finer. A qualitative choice. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 69
    89-91 points

    2016 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru 'Faconnieres'
Usually $265 - Special Offer $239 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A background application of wood frames notably ripe yet still very fresh aromas of plum liqueur, violet, lavender and a pretty array of spice wisps. This too is overtly muscular with excellent power and drive characterizing the more mineral-driven flavors that exhibit superb persistence on the balanced finish. This will need to develop more depth to merit the upper end of my projected range but the underlying material appears to be present for that to happen.Outstanding.

    ...................................................

    Domaine Faiveley

Erwan Faiveley made two important announcements during my October visit. The first was that a new state-of-the-art cuverie was operational... The second was arguably more important in that it heralds a change in style. Long-time readers may remember that in 2007 the domaine made the dramatic decision to change the style of its reds, which up to that point could be fairly described as unapologetically old school. In other words, reds that were firmly structured, sturdy and built-to-age for the long-term. In 2007 this at times rustic style was discarded in favor of wines that possessed more elegance and finesse in the hopes of creating more supple burgundies that required less long-term cellaring. Faiveley explained that "while we like the current style and what it offers, for several years we were feeling that perhaps we had strayed too far from our roots. To this end, we finally asked if there might not be a way to combine the two in a way that remained true to our history but didn't require 20 years before the wines were completely ready to drink. So now we're looking for more density and riper tannins while doing our best to retain a more refined mouthfeel. To achieve this we're harvesting a few days later in the search for a higher level of phenolic maturity and then vinifying the fruit in a fashion that reduces forced extraction and emphasizes natural extraction. In other words, we will take what the fruit has to give in any given vintage without forcing more out of it that often results in overtly extracted wines."
    Allen Meadows, Burghound

2016 Mercurey 1er Cru 'Clos du Roy'
Usually $79 - Special Offer $69 - Add to Cart

A pungent nose consists of wood and reductive aromas. Otherwise there is good freshness and verve to the dense and serious medium weight flavors that flash outstanding minerality on the moderately rustic and built-to-age finish. This is very good though note that it will need at least some patience. Top Value, Outstanding.

    Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

“I’ll always remember the extreme 2016 growing season,” said Pierre-Yves Colin at the beginning of June. “It was amazing that we were able to make wine from every vineyard. We started from zero after the frost and we thought some vineyards would give nothing..."
"It’s not an unripe vintage, as in 2007 and 2004,” Colin emphasized. “The fruit character is more citrus than stone fruits. And the vintage is more mineral than 2015 in terms of its freshness at the beginning. Some of the best 2016s remind me of the 2010s. The bad thing for growers in 2016 is the low quantities, not the quality of the wines.”

    2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Abbaye de Morgeot'
Usually $255 - Special Offer $235 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A pungent array of oak, resin and petrol aromas lead to unusually sleek middle weight flavors in the context of what is typical for Morgeot and this sense of refinement also characterizes the nicely detailed and lingering finale. This should drink well young but reward mid-term cellaring as well.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 71
    90-92points

    2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Baudines'
Usually $259 - Special Offer $245 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A cool and restrained if exceptionally pretty nose combines notes of green apple, oak, resin and a whiff of rose petal. Not surprisingly the mouth feel of the medium weight is notably finer and markedly more mineral-driven as well on the clean, agreeably dry, clean and lingering finale. This is at once racy and refined and should age well. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 71
    90-93points

    2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru 'Les Chenevottes'
Usually $265 - Special Offer $249 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A ripe yet admirably fresh nose is comprised mostly by liqueur-like aromas of apple, pear and citrus. The racy and intense medium weight flavors are more delineated than is typical for Chenevottes, all wrapped in a very dry and clean finale. This is pretty but it's a bit one-dimensional today and will need at least a few years to better develop additional depth.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 71
    89-91points

    2016 Meursault 'Les Narvaux'
Usually $204 - Special Offer $189 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

An alluring nose features notes of hazelnut, dried yellow fruit and soft floral notes. There is good volume to the rich medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent intensity and minerality on the balanced and lingering finish. This offers fine quality for its level and is worth checking out. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 71
    89-91points

2016 Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Charmes'
Usually $339 - Special Offer $315 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

A ripe if youthfully reticent nose of acacia blossom, white peach and a pretty array of citrus aromas is trimmed in enough exotic elements to notice. There is fine richness to the relatively full-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract yet the lingering finish is detailed to the point of being chiseled. Excellent potential here. Outstanding.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 71
    90-93points

2016 Meursault 1er Cru 'Les Genevrieres'
Usually $370 - Special Offer $345 - Add to Cart

Naturally exotic aromas speak of Asian-style tea, lavender, citrus and spice. The gorgeously refined, stony and sophisticated flavors possess notably better complexity while delivering outstanding length on the chiseled and well-balanced finale. This too possesses excellent development potential.Sweet spot, Outstanding.

    Domaine Christian Moreau

Domaine Christian Moreau has been one of the most reliable sources of Chablis in recent years. Christian Moreau himself, always brutally candid with an impeccably wry, almost sardonic sense of humor and of course decades of experience, escorted me through the 2016 barrel samples and 2015s in bottle, plus a smattering of older vintages (see "Up From the Cellar"). To be frank, these mature bottles were interesting to taste, however, they testify to the tangible improvement under Fabien Moreau. I asked Christian why that might be the case and what factors have led to this upswing. He answered that they have paid far more attention to the vineyards in recent years, resulting in higher quality fruit. In the last four or five vintages, the wines have displayed far more precision and terroir expression and perhaps superior aging potential.

2016 Chablis Grand Cru 'Les Clos'
Usually $149 - Special Offer $135 - Add to Cart
    Limited Stock

Once again moderate wood stops just short of overshadowing the pretty and well-layered aromas of rose petal, petrol, mineral reduction and white peach. The sleek and beautifully refined medium weight plus flavors exhibit more minerality and almost as much power that really comes up on the balanced, focused and strikingly long finish. This is a really impressive 2016.Sweet spot.

    ...................................................

    Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon

Leading Meursault producer Dominique Lafon was the first leading light of the Côte d'Or to take white Mâcon so seriously that he set up shop there - buying an existing domaine in the folds of the western hills in Milly-Lamartine way back in 1999...
Every year when I go and taste in the enviably capacious, recently extended cellars of the Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault I always try to taste as many of the Mâcons as possible and they just keep on getting better and better, yet these finely crafted Chardonnays are not expensive (particularly when one compares their prices with those of Lafon Meursaults!).

    2016 Macon-Villages
Usually $45 - Special Offer $40- Add to Cart

Initially this was slightly reduced but aggressive swirling quickly liberates the aromas of lemon zest, pear and apple scents. The rich and nicely vibrant flavors possess an appealing mouth feel as well as a clean and dry finish where a touch of salinity adds lift. This should make for a fine all-around sipper.

    2016 Macon-Milly-Lamartine
Usually $55 - Special Offer $50 - Add to Cart

As it often is at this stage, this is much more aromatically restrained; indeed today it's almost mute and only grudgingly offers up lemon-tinged green apple aromas. The supple, round and attractively textured flavours flash a touch of minerality on the very dry finish where a hint of grapefruit arises.

    2016 Macon-Milly-Lamartine 'Clos du Four'
Usually $72 - Special Offer $65 - Add to Cart

...There is a bit more volume to the sappy and extract-rich mid-palate that exhibits impressive intensity while delivering slightly better depth and persistence on the markedly dry finale. This will need at least a year of bottle age first. Worth considering.
    Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 68

    2016 Vire-Clesse
Usually $75 - Special Offer $69 - Add to Cart

...More obviously mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess both excellent detail and intensity while coating the palate with sappy dry extract on the wonderfully refreshing, dry and focused finale. This is a fine effort for the appellation.

There is fine richness to the relatively full-bodied flavors that brim with dry extract yet the lingering finish is detailed to the point of being chiseled. Excellent potential here. Outstanding.

Usually $55 - Special Offer $50 - Add to Cart

As it often is at this stage, this is much more aromatically restrained; indeed today it's almost mute and only grudgingly offers up lemon-tinged green apple aromas. The supple, round and attractively textured flavours flash a touch of minerality on the very dry finish where a hint of grapefruit arises.

...There is a bit more volume to the sappy and extract-rich mid-palate that exhibits impressive intensity while delivering slightly better depth and persistence on the markedly dry finale. This will need at least a year of bottle age first. Worth considering.

...More obviously mineral-driven middle weight flavors possess both excellent detail and intensity while coating the palate with sappy dry extract on the wonderfully refreshing, dry and focused finale. This is a fine effort for the appellation.
