MW Wines Team Picks For Christmas

    by Hugh French | Dec 10, 2018

    MWWINES - PRIMARY - PMS

Our General Manager, Simon loves those fabled Burgundian varieties, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. See what he's picked as delicious gifts or the perfect wine to share with friends and family.

    Simon Xmas Wines

2015 Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir $80

From arguably the best Pinot Noir producer in Australia, the Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir is always excellent value. Delicious, pure Gippsland expression. Enjoy it now or if you prefer, put it away for a year or ten.

    2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St.-Georges V.V. $105

2008 Red Burgundy is generally drinking really well right now and this is no exception. Excellent acidity, bright red fruit, good texture and complexity. What’s not to love?

2016 Domaine Bouchard Pere et Fils Meursault ‘Les Clous’ $105

At MW we love a good Meursault. This is a classic example with mineral, citrus and spice dominating. Great to enjoy now or over the next few years if you can keep your hands off them.

    .............................................

If you're still on the hunt for that perfect gift or just something great to drink on Christmas Day, check out what Hugh wouldn't mind finding under the tree.

    Hugh Xmas Wines

2016 Curly Flat Williams Crossing Pinot Noir $32

Always presents as much more than a simple 'entry level' wine. Great savoury notes and solid structure that punch well above its weight. Age-worthy and delicious!

    2017 Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier $120

A landmark vintage for the Shiraz Viognier. Incredibly perfumed on the nose, silky and elegant on the palate. A much lauded Australian Shiraz and rightly so.

2014 G.D. Vajra Barolo 'Bricco delle Viole' $158

Hugely Complex. Intense fruit and floral character, robust yet fine tannins. An exquisite wine that is delicious now but will offer so much more in the future.

    .............................................

Check out these great value Christmas ideas from Wine Consultant and stalwart of the wine industry, Peter.

    Peter Xmas Wines

2017 A. Rodda Smiths Vineyard Beechworth Chardonnay $40

Always a complex Chardonnay at a great value price. Hard to beat and far easier on the sky rocket than many others.

2016 Bindi Dixon Pinot Noir $59

Very impressive Macedon Pinot. An honest wine at its price.

    2014 Craiglee Shiraz $60

A hidden gem that often gets overlooked! Well priced and built to age.

    .............................................

Let's see what David, our longstanding Wine Consultant can't do without during the festive season.

    Davids Xmas Wines

2010 Penfolds St. Henri Shiraz $199

Arguably the greatest St. Henri of all time. Tons of fruit structured by firm fine tannin. A decadent Australian classic

    2015 Mount Mary Chardonnay $109

A symphony of nectarine, lime and grapefruit with a gorgeous long finish. a top notch Chardonnay

    NV Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose $129

My go-to Champagne. Superbly balanced, lush, elegant and joyously fruity. A must for your Christmas table.

    .............................................

Check out our National Sales Manager, Micks top picks for underneath the Christmas tree or at your table for a festive season get-together.

    Mick Xmas Wines 2

Giant Steps 2017 Wombat Creek Chardonnay $57

Impeccably balanced example from a great producer in a stunning vintage. Textural and long with great acidity this wine is a real crowd pleaser at a great price. Not big and buttery or too lean, this sits in the happy place that makes us all love Chardonnay!

Joh Jos Prum 2015 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese Riesling $115

I love JJ Prum and the 2015s I tried last year are as good as I’ve ever had from them. This has that hallmark raciness with rapier-like acidity balancing out the generous mid-palate fruit. One bottle of this disappears of my table in minutes, it’s just that delicious!

Domaine Jean Grivot 2010 Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Pruliers' $289

Grivot make seriously good wines of depth and structure. This Premier Cru Nuits-St.-Georges is pretty and floral with lifted fruit character and super fresh acid to pull it together. 2010 is my favourite Burgundy vintage ever and this wine would be well received by any serious Pinot lover.
