Domaine Christian Moreau & Jane Eyre

    by Hugh French | Feb 28, 2019

Domaine Christian Moreau & Jane Eyre

This week at MW we've got two great producers on offer.
Firstly, two wines from Chablis producer Domaine Christian Moreau. These are our pick of the bunch from this producer in 2017, a vintage some are claiming to be the best for the region since the unbelievable 2014.
Following the Chablis are the 2018 Gippsland and Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noirs from Burgundy-based Australian producer Jane Eyre.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order simply click the links below  or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or call us on 03 9419 6990.

    Domaine Christian Moreau

The 2017 production was of small volume. We lost 65% of production, worse than in 2016. For the Chablis we picked at 35 hl/ha and Vaillon at 48hl/ha since just one hectare was touched by frost however, the Grand Crus represent the smallest production ever. For example, we cropped just 8hl/ha in Valmur. We were able to use candles in Les Clos so we picked at 22 hl/ha. We used them for eight nights, but the vines spent so many hours at 0° or -1° Celsius that they suffered a lot of‘fillage’. Even during the day it was quite cold so that after six nights everyone was tired. Usually we sell some wine in bulk because we don’t have the space in the winery, but this year we kept everything.
    Fabien Moreau, Winemaker

Generally speaking, I find the 2017 vintage to hold more promise than the 2016...overall it is a vintage that may end up being the best since 2014.

2017 Chablis 1er Cru 'Vaillons Cuvee Guy Moreau'
    Usually $105 - Special Offer $94

The 2017 Chablis Vaillons Cuvée Guy Moreau 1er Cru, which comes from the oldest vines in the vineyard, is again, a little closed on the nose and tricky to read. The palate is very well balanced with a fine line of acidity, a little more richness and smoothness compared to the regular bottling with gorgeous dried honey and walnut note furnishing the long finish. Superb.
    Neal Martin, Vinous.com - 92-94 Points

2017 Chablis Grand Cru 'Les Clos'
    Usually $170 - Special Offer $155

Once again the presence of moderate wood influence does not suppress the expressiveness of the mildly exotic white orchard fruit and oyster shell aromas. The delicious and succulent medium plus weight flavors possess ample amounts of minerality and sappy dry extract that buffers the lemon-tinged acid spine shaping the powerful, complex and impressively persistent finale. This too is very promising. Don't Miss!
Allen Meadows, Burghound Issue 72 - 92-94 Points

    Jane Eyre

Since leaving Australia for France in 1998, Jane has carved out her place in Burgundy, working under Dominique Lafon, forging alliances with Benjamin Leroux and releasing her own wines from Burgundy to favourable reviews. She now divides her time making wine in both Burgundy and Victoria, with William Downie minding the Mornington Peninsula, Gippsland and Yarra Valley vines in her absence. This week we've got the 2018 Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland Pinot Noirs on offer. Both regions experienced success in 2018 with reports already saying that this may be the best vintage on the Mornington Peninsula in 30 years.

    2018 Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir
    Usually $52 - Special Offer $48

A neat set of red and dark cherry fruit aromas interwoven with a briary more arboreal edge of leaves and sappy woody notes and little in the way of oak influence. The palate has a very bright red fruit burst of strawberry and red cherry fruit flavours and then twists to deliver a very succulent, sweet and fresh build into the finish. I like the way this holds the finish too. Drink or hold.
    Nick Stock - 93 Points

    2018 Gippsland Pinot Noir
    Usually $55 - Special Offer $50

A wide array of floral notes, violets and roses here, some black tea as well as some savoury, almost earthy and stony nuances across a band of blueberry and purple cherry fruits. Very complex already. The palate has an ethereal texture with fluffy light tannins carrying a smooth dark cherry fruit core of flavour that builds neatly into the crisp, chalky finish. Very complex. Drink now.
