New in the MW Shop - Giant Steps New Release Single Vineyard Collection

    by Hugh French | Apr 17, 2019

Special Offer - New Release Giant Steps
Single Vineyard Pinot Noir & Chardonnay

We love Giant Steps and visited a few weeks back to check out the new release 2018s. We felt it'd be hard to follow up the 2017s but wow, these wines stack up and then some. If anything there's an approachability to the 2018s that wasn't there when the 2017s got released this time last year. The Chardonnay's have a terrific consistency with just the Ocarina standing out as quite different, all textural and rich and so drinkable (combination of three sites made in a ceramic egg).

The Pinots have more diversity in style with some showing raw whole bunch character (Primavera) and others showing pristine Yarra Pinot character (Wombat Creek). This was also our first look at Nocton (Coal River in Tassie) and TOSQ (Central Otago, NZ) Pinot Noirs. Both wines stand up incredibly well, the Nocton is everything you like about southern Tassie (think Tolpuddle) and the TOSQ shows you just how surprisingly elegant Central Otago Pinot can be when plied by a deft hand.

Giant Steps have fast become one of the greatest single site Chardonnay and Pinot producers in the country, and certainly, warrant a place in any discerning cellar.

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or by or calling us on 03 9419 6990.

    2018 Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay
    Usually $59 - Special Offer $50

A fuller Yarra chardonnay due to being situated in a warmer part of the valley. Textural, nutty, zesty lemon, with supple, ripe and crunchy orchard fruit. Superb body that coats the palate then refreshes with juicy a acid structure. Long, generous and delicious.
    MW Wines

    2018 Sexton Vineyard Chardonnay
    Usually $59 - Special Offer $50

Mendoza clone from the slopes of the north facing Warramate Ranges. Naturally low yielding vines with a high skin to juice ratio. Another generous expression here with more lactic notes, orchard, citrus and unripe tropical fruits. Acreamier texture, balanced by long acidity and hints of stoney minerality.
    MW Wines

    2018 Applejack Vineyard Chardonnay
    Usually $59 - Special Offer $50

Upper Yarra which results in a longer and cooler ripening period. Incredible structure. Vibrant and linear acidity with juicy grapefruit, crunchy apples and tart stone fruit. Lovely flinty notes here.
    MW Wines

    2018 Wombat Creek Vineyard Chardonnay
    Usually $59 - Special Offer $50

Originally planted for Methode Traditional base in 1988, the Wombat Creek vineyard possesses the highest elevation on the Yarra Valley (420m). More generous and plump than the Applejack initially with riper stone fruit notes but these find themselves kept well in line by the vineyards characteristically long and persistent acidity. Really good!
    MW Wines

    2018 Ocarina Clay Ferment Chardonnay
    Usually $66 - Special Offer $60

Textural white of high interest and compelling drinkability – light chalkiness, faint stoney characters meshed to green apple, ripe citrus and white chocolate notes. So much going on. The wine slips over the palate with ease, finds some good concentration of flavour, delivers inherent freshness. Dials up the chardonnay fruit character yet holds such essential purity then, again, that texture is such a charm and so unique. A wonderful expression. I’m in.

    2018 Sexton Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Usually $66 - Special Offer $60

Spicey and perfumed with ripe darker red berry and cherry notes. Highly tonned aromatic character. The palate is plush with a subtle structure of super fine tannin and refreshing acid. A great showing from a vineyard that is typically on the more generous side.
    MW Wines

    2018 Primavera Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Usually $66 - Special Offer $60

Funky and stemmy (in a good way)from obvious whole bunch fermentation. Bright red fruits with a touch of sweet spice. Beautifully interwoven, fine tannin and acid add great structure to what is a very serious Pinot Noir.
    MW Wines

    2018 Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Usually $66 - Special Offer $60

Deep cherry and red fruits with spice and savoury gaminess as the backdrop. The 2018 Applejack is an incredibly balanced Pinot built upon well-integrated tannin and super precise acid. An absolute highlight of the line up!
    MW Wines

2018 Wombat Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Usually $66- Special Offer $60

Immensly perfumed and elegant, the 2018 Wombat Creek Pinot Noir shows quintessential delicate red fruits with lovely herbaceousness from a portion whole bunch fermentation. Glossy and silken in texture, with lovely lean tannins and balanced acid.
    MW Wines

    2018 Nocton Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Usually $76 - Special Offer $70

100% whole bunch from Coal River Valley, Tasmanian and again, highly perfumed and delicate. Sour cherries, herbaceousness and a bit of funk. A very pretty structure that draws long on the palate, lingering and delicious. The 2018 Nocton is made in minute quantities and is definitely worth a look. Make sure to grab some before it disappears.
    MW Wines

    2017 TOSQ Vineyard Pinot Noir
    Usually $76- Special Offer $70

Peppery/brambly characters seasoning ripe red cherry fruit – a pretty start. Lots of scent. Bright flavours, pretty here too, satiny texture with cool red cherry fruit characters, lick of cranberry, splash of tangy pomegranate, lively feel and a creep of firm tannins for shape. A vibrant and lifted CO pinot. It’s amazing how outsiders interpret the region and seem to excel. Really lovely wine, is the message anyway.
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front - 93 Points

    Giant Steps Back Vintage Wines

    2017 Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay- $57

Ripe apple, lemon curd, scents of faint, wet stones. Palate is ample, juicy, almost fleshy but for the licks of minerally tartness of acidity. Has some white chocolate notes, almost the texture of just melted chocolate bar, soft and long, stains the palate gently, the finish perky and fresh. It’s one of those lip-licking, moreish chardonnays, and will be hard to put down. Yep.
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front - 94 Points

    2017 Applejack Vineyard Chardonnay - $57

Parisian almond, lemon rind, grapefruit juice, faint wet slate notes. Saline tang to acidity, some light creaminess of savoury nuttiness though the mainstay is a core of blisteringly fresh tart fruit flavour underlying. Incredible velocity and freshness, character, complexity, nerviness. Beautiful, super thing.
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front - 95 Points

2017 Wombat Creek Vineyard Chardonnay- $57

Flint, halva, faint wet stone notes, some green apple, some faint buttery notes. Clatters through the palate, lively and refreshing, shows some leesy nuttiness, cool acidity staying perky and alert through the wine. Finishes with incredible velocity of acidity, tart and citrus rind feeling, with a faint stain of malty-nougat stuff. Live wire, interesting, good.
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front - 94 Points

    2017 Applejack Vineyard Pinot Noir - $65

Acid driven, light and fragrant style, has that sense of sleekness from fine pinot tannins yet is tightly wound, coiled and precise as it rolls through the palate. Red currants, cranberry, smoke and sweet earth to sniff on. Savoury edged red fruit to taste. Balanced, lithe, very finely wrought. Such elegance, and, importantly, incredible sense of energy in the wine. Now we can use the word outstanding.
Mike Bennie, The Wine Front - 96 Points

2017 Wombat Creek Vineyard Pinot Noir - $65

Pretty, voluminous perfume, loaded with sweet red berry fruits, spiked with green herbs, undergrowth, briar, touch of truffle/mushroom. Silky in the palate, great volume of flavour, squeakiness through the finish, mouthwatering too. Has good concentration, mouth perfume even, floats through its long finish. Superb wine, delicious drinking.
