2016 Domaine Jean Grivot - Now in the MW Wines Shop

    by Hugh French | Sep 06, 2019

    2016 Domaine Jean Grivot
Now in the MW Wines Shop

We absolutely adore the wines of Jean Grivot. They've elevated themselves to hero status in the last decade and continue to shine with sparkling pure expressions of Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-Saint-Georges. If you wanted to have a conversation about the greatest producers in Burgundy they'd have to be in the frame, that's how highly we rate the wines of Grivot.

Nick and Mick visited with Etienne back in May and were wowed by what they saw out of barrel (but more on the 2018s when they hit here in 2021).

The new release 2016s, as well as the vast back vintage catalogue of these extraordinary wines we have in our holdings, will be on special offer pricing for the next 7 days!

All wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order simply click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or callus on 03 9419 6990.

    2016 Bourgogne Rouge
    Usually $109 - Special Offer $104

A pretty nose exhibits notes of freshly sliced red berries that are cut with soft earth nuances that can also be found on the succulent, vibrant and utterly delicious flavors that possess good balance and just enough finishing structure to suggest that this should reward a few years of cellaring. Worth checking out. Outstanding, Top value.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 86-89 Points

    2016 Vosne-Romanee
    Usually $199 - Special Offer $189

A more elegant and really quite pretty nose offers up a ripe and fresh blend of plum, dark cherry and spice, all of which is trimmed in subtle wood. The generous, fleshy and very round medium-bodied flavors possess a highly seductive mid-palate mouthfeel while exhibiting good length on the delicious finale that also flashes a touch of youthful austere.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 88-91 Points

    2016 Vosne-Romanee 'Bossieres'
    Usually $229 - Special Offer $215

This is the first wine to display any appreciable reduction. Otherwise there is excellent punch and freshness to the sleeker and more refined medium weight flavors that less mineral-driven but richer, all wrapped in a delineated finish that delivers excellent depth and persistence. This first-rate effort is clearly built-to-age and is going to need it. Outstanding.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 89-92 Points

    2016 Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru 'Aux Brulees'
    Usually $549 - Special Offer $529

A cool, super-fresh and restrained nose offers up airy aromas of essence of black pinot fruit, violet, anise and a discreet hint of wood spice. The dense, powerful and muscular big-bodied flavors possess plenty of tannin-buffering dry extract, which is important because the tannic spine is unmistakably present on the robust and mineral-driven finish. While it would not be entirely fair to describe this as rustic, it flirts with it, yet a fine Brûlées almost always becomes seductive in time. Recommended if you have the patience to cellar it for the longer-term. Outstanding.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 91-94 Points

    2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Pruliers'
    Usually $399 - Special Offer $379

While this isn't quite as aromatically elegant as the Roncière, it is still quite pretty with its perfumed aromas of both red and dark berries, earth and a subtle hint of humus. The rich, generously proportioned and dense medium weight plus flavors possess impressive power while delivering equally good depth and length if not quite the same minerality. This is presently very firmly structured and is a wine that clearly is going to require patience; indeed I would advise holding this for a minimum of 7 to 8 years first and 15+ will likely be necessary. Outstanding.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 90-93 Points

    2016 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru 'Aux Boudots'
    Usually $479 - Special Offer $449

Here the wood treatment isn't subtle though neither is it sufficient to overshadow the wonderfully fresh and layered nose of blue pinot fruit, cassis, earth and broad range of spice elements. The mouthfeel of the broad-shouldered flavors is equally seductive and even sleeker but despite the generous mid-palate there is solid muscle and a firm core of tannins supporting the powerful and driving finish. As big as this is, it still manages to remain refined and well-balanced. Lovely stuff but once again, extended patience will be required if you wish to experience this at its peak. Outstanding.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 91-94 Points

2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru
    Usually $699 - Special Offer $669

A distinctly earthy and very ripe nose flashes notes of plum, dark currant, violet, mocha and discreet but not invisible wood. The rich, full-bodied and powerful big-bodied flavors terminate in mouth coating, youthfully austere and impressively long finish. This terrific if very backward effort is a classic Clos de Vougeot of power and restraint that will require ample cellar time.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 95 Points

    2016 Echezeaux Grand Cru
    Usually $899 - Special Offer $869

A deft touch of wood frames a strongly reduced nose. More positively, the velvety, round and utterly seductive large-scaled flavors are brimming with dry extract on the mouth coating and quite serious finish that displays sensational length and stunning complexity. This is a powerful Ech that is also clearly built to age. Note that my rating implicitly assumes that the reduction displayed by the nose will eventually dissipate as it does not show up on the palate.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 95 Points

    2016 Richebourg Grand Cru
    Usually $2,999 - Special Offer $2,899

Here too there is a touch of wood hovering in the background of the reticent but wonderfully spicy, airy and cool array of mostly dark berry fruit and floral aromas. The tautly muscular and intensely mineral-driven large-scaled flavors possess innate power that drench the palate in dry extract while delivering gorgeous depth and length on the dusty and youthfully austere finish that goes on and on. This is magnificent though like the Clos de Vougeot and the Echézeaux, it would be virtually pointless to open a bottle young and besides, there is so much potential that it would be a shame to waste it.
Allen Meadows, Burghound - 97 Points
