    New Albino Rocca Barbaresco

    by Hugh French | Mar 20, 2020

    New Release of Albino Rocca

Furthering a long story of quality wine making, the Rocca siblings (Monica, Daniela and Paola)are responsible for some of the most pristine, pure and contemporary expressions of Barbaresco. Today we have the new releases from 2018 and 2016 available including the very limited 2016 Barbaresco 'Angelo', a hommage to the Rocca's father, and valued member of the Barbaresco wine growing community, Angelo Rocca.

“The 2016 Barbarescos from Albino Rocca are every bit as compelling from bottle as they were from barrel. Readers will find a set of wines that are precise and deeply expressive of site… The 2016s, wines from a potentially historic vintage, may very well put Barbaresco on the map big time.”
    Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

    2018 Dolcetto d'Alba
    Usually $37 - Special Offer $33

The vines are 30-40 years old, and thanks to their maturity and the sensible yields they offer, this wine displays more intensity and texture than many a garden-variety Dolcetto d’Alba. This is reared only in tank to preserve purity and, like the other Rocca 2018s, shows the strength of the vintage—with loads of pure, juicy red cherry and cranberry fruits and a vibrant, punchy close. Terrific value.
    Winemakers Notes

    2018 Barbera d'Alba
    Usually $38 - Special Offer $34

This Barbera was raised entirely in tank and was bottled early in order to keep everything vibrant and fresh. Again, the quality of the excellent 2018 vintage shines through, and the wine is crammed with fleshy plum, violet and subtle herbs. There’s some good texture, while the varietal’s refreshing acidity is very well integrated.
    Winemakers Notes

2018 Langhe Nebbiolo 'Rosso di Rocca'
    Usually $39 - Special Offer $35

98% Nebbiolo and 2% Cabernet Franc. The Nebbiolo hails from a vineyard at Magliano Alfieri—in the foothills of the Roero region—purchased in 2016 (the vines were planted in 1967 and 1998). The Cabernet Franc comes from 20-year-old Estate vines in Barbaresco. Roero’s sandy soils gift a lighter, brighter, early-drinking wine compared with the Rocca’s Nebbiolo d’Alba.
    Winemakers Notes

    2018 Nebbiolo d'Alba
    Usually $55 - Special Offer $48

Like the vast majority of the Rocca wines, the Nebbiolo d’Alba derives from a single site—again a parcel right on the southern border of the Barbaresco region in the Seno d’Elvio subzone. The Nebbiolo vines here vary in age from 15 to 60 years. The 2018 was matured for 12 months in large Austrian and German Stockinger oak casks and offers outstanding depth and interest for the money. Expect waves of plum, floral and dried fruit aromas and flavours as well as some complex tobacco notes. All this is framed in some fine, powdery Nebbiolo tannins. A really classy wine for the level with surprising depth and finesse.
    Winemakers Notes

    2016 Barbaresco
    Usually $89 - Special Offer $79

The 2016 Barbaresco is a gorgeous entry-level wine in this range. Dark and fleshy, the 2016 offers terrific depth as well as plenty of character, which is great to see in its peer group. Black cherry, plum, mocha, leather, spice and licorice all meld together. One of the more open wines in the range, the Barbaresco will also give readers an idea of what to expect. This is an absolutely delicious wine in its peer group and price range. The straight Barbaresco is a blend from Meruzzano and young vine fruit from Ronchi.”
    Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com - 92 Points

    2016 Barbaresco 'Angelo'
    Usually $225 - Special Offer $199

The 2016 Barbaresco Angelo, the estate's top bottling, is a blend of 50% Ronchi, 25% Montersino and 25% Loreto, done entirely in cask. Reticent at first, the 2016 needs several hours of air to start opening up. A super-classic expression of Nebbiolo follows, with hints of menthol, leather, iron, violet spice and licorice that develop later. The 2016 remains a wine of fascinating contrasts. It is at times light on its feet, while at other moments it comes across as much more powerful.
