G.D. Vajra & Luigi Baudana
- In The MW Shop Now -
Another week, another wonderful release of Barolo from the exceptional 2016 vintage. This time from G.D Vajra &Luiga Baudana.G.D Vajra is run by the second generation of Giuseppe, Isidoro and Francesca Vaira, lovingly overseen by father Aldo and mother Milena. It was Aldo that founded G.D. Vajra, kicking off with a counter-cultural twist by returning to his ancestors’ land in the early ‘70s, when all else were deserting the countryside in droves.
In addition to the G.D Vajra wines, we are also offering the wines of Luigi Baudana, which the Vairas took over in 2009. With no heirs and a plethora of producers vying for his precious, tiny crus in Serralunga (Baudana and Ceretta), Luigi Baudana entrusted his vines to the respected Vaira Family.
2016 was a beautiful, classic vintage. Locals called it "a farmer's year" for what is a very rare combination of high quality, purity of aromatics and generous crop. After a mild winter, temperatures dropped in March with a lot of rain that enriched the water reserves. Flowering was abundant thanks to the gentle weather conditions, shaping the vintage into one of lift and energy over concentration. Night temperatures remained low throughout the Spring, and phenological ripening was delayed until the very end of the summer. It will be remembered as one of the longest-lasting vintages of recent years, with picking starting in September and continuing well into late October, similar to 2004, 2008 and 2013.
The Vaira family has turned out a magnificent set of Barolos at both their own winery and at Baudana. As always, the Barolos are all about finesse and nuance, very much like an artists' pencil etchings, where all the lines are totally delineated. Most importantly, the Vairas have developed a personal style that melds classicisim with a level of approachability that makes these wines so alluring, even upon release.

This is a terrific offering from G.D Vajra, with innovative and clever wines ranging from the classic Barolo Bricco delle Viole to the informal Langhe Nebbiolo. Congratulations on these gorgeous wines.

2018 Langhe Rosso DOC
Usually $34 - Special Offer $30
Our Langhe Rosso is a hug from Piedmont. It’s an invitation to explore its different varieties and to get to know its personality. From young vineyards, it is a fruity, delicately complex wine - an ideal companion at the table. It’s predominately Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, with smaller quantities of Freisa, Albarossa, Pinot Noir. Each vineyard is harvested when it reaches perfect ripeness. The varieties are vinified one by one, to express their personality and uniqueness. The wine is aged for 18-24 months partially in steel and then in first-, second- and third-use pièces.

2019 Dolcetto d'Alba DOC
Usually $37 - Special Offer $33
The G.D. Vajra 2019 Dolcetto d'Alba is a dark and exuberant wine that offers a naked and pure interpretation of this easy and food-friendly grape. Dolcetto d'Alba is the kind of wine I'd love to pair with my favorite broccoli rapini and spicy sausage pizza from a wood oven. Dark cherry, blackberry and prune segue to bitter almond and tilled earth.

2018 Barbera d'Alba DOC
Usually $47- Special Offer $41
The G.D. Vajra 2018 Barbera d'Alba sees fruit sourced from different sites in Barolo that represent the three main soil types of the area. The wine goes through a simple stainless steel winemaking process, and this cool vintage delivers focused and linear aromas. You get dark fruit and cassis with some soft earthy tones and a hint of tobacco leaf. This is a steady, mid-weight wine to pair with foods cooked with butter or cream. Maybe a nice risotto? The balanced acidity you get here will cut through those foods.

2018 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Usually $51 - Special Offer $44
The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from a parcel in Sinio. Dark fruit, spice, earthy notes and a good bit of tannin give the Vajra's Langhe Nebbiolo a decidedly brooding, powerful feel and quite a bit more seriousness than is typical at this level. Sweet red berry fruit, mint and spice add freshness alongside bright acidity as the 2018 opens up in the glass. This is such a pretty and expressive wine.

2016 Barolo 'Albe' DOCG
Usually $112- Special Offer $100
Vajra's Barolo Albe is bright, floral and wonderfully lifted in 2016. Sweet tobacco, cedar, blood orange, mint, licorice, dried red cherry and sage give the 2016 lovely savory brightness to match its mid-weight structure. Gracious and light on its feet, the Albe has so much to offer.

2016 Barolo 'Coste di Rose' DOCG
Very Limited - $159
The 2016 Barolo Coste di Rose is plump, juicy and forward - all qualities that make it one of the more approachable wines in the Vajra range. Plump dark cherry, plum, licorice, spice and menthol all flesh out in a racy, juicy Barolo that will drink well right out of the gate. Plush fruit and silky tannins add to the wine's voluptuous feel and early accessibility. This is very good, but it is not particularly complex.

2016 Barolo 'Bricco delle Viole' DOCG
Very Limited -$185
The 2016 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is going to need a few years to emerge, but it has all the qualities to develop into a truly special wine. Dark red/purplish fruit, hard candy, mint, lavender and sweet spice give the 2016 striking inner perfume. On the palate, the 2016 is a tightly wound, classically austere Barolo that will especially delight readers with traditionally leaning palates. In this late-ripening vintage, there is a great balance of structure, aromatics and mid-palate sweetness. I absolutely loved it.

2016 Barolo 'Ravera' DOCG
Very Limited - $185
The 2016 Barolo Ravera is tough as nails today, but it has striking inner sweetness and remarkable persistence. Even so, readers will have to exercise a great deal of patience, as the 2016 is not likely to offer much in the way of pleasure for a number of years. Bright red cherry, mint, white pepper, blood orange and dried flowers give the 2016 brilliant top notes to match its finely sculpted feel. Veins of acidy and tannin add razor-sharp precision throughout. I can't wait to taste this in another few years' time.

2016 Barolo 'Comune di Serralugna' DOCG
Very Limited - $129
The 2016 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba is a gorgeous entry-level wine in this range. Sweet floral and savory notes open up first, followed by hints of scorched earth, graphite, iron and blood. Deceptive in its mid-weight structure, the 2016 packs a serious punch of both Serralunga depth and complexity of aromas and flavors. This is very nicely done.
Antonio Galloni, vinous.com - 93 Points
2016 Barolo 'Baudana' DOCG
Very Limited - $185
The 2016 Barolo Baudana is laced with sweet red cherry, floral overtones and silky tannins, all of which make it one of the more refined, sensual Serralunga Barolos readers will come across. In this tasting, the Baudana impresses with its haunting aromatics and transparent expression of Nebbiolo. Like all of these wines, it needs time in bottle but it is super impressive, even in the early going.
Antonio Galloni, vinous.com - 95 Points
2016 Barolo 'Cerretta' DOCG
Very Limited - $185
The 2016 Barolo Cerretta is dark, virile and imposing. Black cherry, lavender, scorched earth, cloves, leather and a range of balsamic notes give the Cerretta its somber, virile feel. Ample and powerful yet also medium in body, the Cerretta captures so much of what makes Nebbiolo so captivating, specifically the ability for a wine to constantly transform in the glass.
