It's not often that we mention Burgundy and value in the same breath, but today we have an exciting Burgundian producer representing excellent value. Philippe and his son Johann are at the helm of Domaine Philippe Robert and offer an outstanding entry into the northern Cote de Nuits, producing delightful wines of balance and concentration. The family also has exceptionally close ties with the highly regarded Rousseau's of Gevrey-Chambertin. Although this put them on our radar, it was the quality of the wines that grabbed our attention.

2018 Bourgogne Rouge

Bourgogne Rouge from a small vineyard in the village of Couchey (0.65 acres), calcium rich soils, hand picked from vines which age between 50-75 years of age, fermented in old concrete open fermenters before spending 13 months elevage in old oak barrels before being assembled for bottling. Wonderful concentrated entry level Burgundy.

2018 Marsannay 'Au Ronsoy'

The first nose has intense notes of black cherries. Then aeration releases complex notes of red berries jam (strawberry and raspberry), fresh black berries (blackcurrant) and notes of wild blackberries (blackberry and blueberry). This nose reveals a delicate depth when sweet spices (cinnamon), green pepper and laurel appear. The attack is ample and rich. The palate shows a nice concentration and aromatic power. It is balanced and shows a blood side giving it a nice energy. The tannins are present but structure the mouth finessely. The finish is charming with its fruity and spicy notes.
