New Bass Phillip Release, Bannockburn and G.D. Vajra

Today we are very excited to be able to offer you the latest releases from Gippsland hero of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, Bass Phillip. Phillip Jones has worked tirelessly since 1979 on his patch of Gippsland dirt employing biodynamic principles to allow the true expression of the site to shine, and shine it most definitely does! Ultra low cropping and a gentle wine making hand have seen this winery achieve what can only be described as Grand Cru heights of quality at its peak. A true pioneer in Australian wine, Phillip Jones has produced another fantastic vintage in 2016, crafting what he believes to be his best Estate Pinot Noir ever!

We also have a selection of new releases from Bannockburn Vineyards. With Matt Holmes taking reigns in 2015, the wines from the Geelong based producer have reclaimed their former glory and are looking absolutely stunning! Previously working vintages all across the winemaking world, this is technically his second stint at Bannockburn, formerly working with winemaker at the time, Michael Glover in 2005. Now in full control of the winery, Matt looks to take advantage of his depth and breadth of experience and take Bannockburn into a very secure future producing delicious wines. Gone are the sappy and reductive wines we've seen from this producer in recent times. The 2015 Pinot Noirs are sublime, pure and complex and it made us smile to see them back where they belong. 2015 Serre might be one of the top 2-3 Pinot Noirs in Australia!

Finally from Barolo the Vajra family have been producing delicious wines in Piedmont since the 1920s. This week we have the 2012 Barolo 'Albe' DOCG, a supposed 'entry-level' wine that offers so much more than that description may lead on. Elegant and ripe, this sophisticated Barolo is hitting its drinking window now and offers fantastic value.

Bass Phillip



The 2016 vintage has delivered red wines with soft fruits, supple texture, balanced acidity and long tannins: another one of our best vintages. These are great wines from Bass Phillip, and they are all capable of medium, long-term cellaring....... However,they are beautiful to drink now!! All the reds need one to two hours breathing after pulling the cork.

2016 Crown Prince Pinot Noir

This wine is all about spice and long tangy flavour. More gentle in fruits, but rather complex: easy dink which readily matches with all manner of dishes,glass-after-glass! Cellaring for two or three years will improve it, but drinking now makes me happy!

This is the best Estate Pinot Noir ever! Fills your mouth with round, complex sweet fruits. Perfect balance & clean, lingering fruits in the finish. Quite powerful.

Again, a very complex, long-flavoured wine with very long tannins: needs a few years in the cellar, but quite drinkable after three hours breathing.

Consistent style over last few years: Floral aromas, melons, citrus and nuts. Backbone of natural acidity. Pronounced minerality. Long palate. This one has good texture.

2015 Pinot Noir


The single vineyard wines tell unique stories; this wine has been telling the composite story of season at Bannockburn since 1980.A moderately warm season punctuated by timely rain produced a more elegant style of Pinot Noir in 2015: lifted red fruits and savoury forest floor on the nose, bright acid and fine tannin on the palate. Immediately enjoyable and versatile with regard to food pairings, this wine will reward medium term ageing in cellar.

2015 Serre Pinot Noir

Our Serré (a French word meaning “tightly packed”) features Pinot Noir grown at Serré Vineyard using close-planting, low trellising and narrow rows to replicate the tough vineyard conditions of Grand Cru Burgundy, naturally yielding at 500g/vine. This block may be the oldest close-planted vineyard outside Europe. It certainly is the best of our Pinot Noir sites: uniform, focused, powerful and fragrant, every year. It will continue to develop and drink well for another ten to 15 years or more.
Bright mid red in colour, with a vibrant nose of lively red fruits and complexing spice, the whole bunch fermentation creates transparency and structure. This lovely wine promises enjoyment in both the short and medium term.

2016 Chardonnay

This wine has consistently been rated as one of Australia’s best Chardonnays, reflecting the ideal combination of soils, climate and mature vines. A second consecutive dry season, with both budburst and harvest early. Fresh citrus fruits are well integrated with struck match and creamy oak aromatics. The wine is centred around a core of moderate acid with supporting phenolics, well suited to a range of food pairings.

2012 Barolo 'Albe' DOCG

The 2012 Barolo Albe is a solid entry-level offering from the Vajra family. Crushed flowers, sweet red berries, tobacco, spices and autumn leaves all open up nicely. Mid-weight gracious and open-knit, the 2012 Albe is an excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years. The 2012 is a bit more forward and less structured than most previous editions, so I would choose to err on the conservative side and drink it sooner rather than later. Drink 2016-2022
