Jean-Luc Jamet & Massolino

Jean-Luc Jamet & Massolino

There aren't many names from the Rhone that send hearts fluttering with excitement like that of Jamet. The wines of Domaine Jamet are some of the most sought after on earth and until 2013 the custodians of this noble estate were brothers Jean-Luc and Jean-Paul Jamet who took over from their father in the early 90s. A spat in the family in 2013 was enough for Jean-Luc to go out on his own and the label bearing his name is now into its third vintage release.

What makes the Côte-Rôtie wines from Jean-Luc Jamet so special is the blend of more than ten different plots of vineyards located in the northern part (considered the most qualitative) of Côte-Rôtie. It is amosaïque of very different rocky soils composed of different degrees of schist and granite. These are the many shades that you'll find in this delicate and very complex wine.

One of our favourites from Piedmonte is Massolino. The family’s greatest asset is, of course, their 23 hectares of Serralunga vineyards, including choice parcels of such famous sites as; Margheria, Parafada and the legendary Vigna Rionda. It is fair to say that Massolino holds the most remarkable collection of vineyards in Serralunga, amongst the smaller, quality-focused producers anyway. The quality strides at this estate over the last 10-15 years have been remarkable with significant advances made, both in vineyard and cellar. As always, however, the search for expressive and perfectly ripe fruit from the vineyards that have driven the rise in quality at this estate. The result has been very good news for both the commune and Barolo in general. Today the wines of Massolino sit comfortably among the finest of the region – they are wines of wonderful purity and elegance.

Domaine Jean-Luc Jamet

With a brand new winery and old vineyards at hand, Jean-Luc has started a new adventure. He is now free to apply his fastidious work ethic in the vineyard to make wines of delicacy and power. The philosophy applied by Jean-Luc is the same that made his family wines so profound, though now they have a gentler touch. The wines seem to be more approachable young to the sometimes austere style of the original Domaine.

2015 Cote-Rotie 'Les Terrasses'
Usually $210 - Special Offer $195 - Add to Cart

Shiny dark red, a handsome robe. The bouquet is bold, on beef stock, iron, dense black berries, has a poised, integral sweetness, airs of raspberry liqueur, oak smoke. It’s a solid start. The palate has the theme of mineral well placed through it, a lot of mountain of matter, thickening towards the finish. It holds sparkling and dense fruits – cassis, soaked cherries. It is vibrant and very full; there is real flair o! its sun-dialled deck. It has great juice; it’s a treat to taste this. Decanting advised. 'It has a lot of black fruits, a belle freshness to underpin it; it’s very long,' Jean-Luc Jamet...

5/5 Stars

Massolino has really been on a roll over the last few vintages. The 2014s are truly impressive wines that further solidify the estate's place among the elite producers of Barolo. While these wines have been terrific for quite some time, in recent years Massolino has found an added element of finesse and nuance. Readers should note that Massolino did not bottle their Barolo Parussi in 2014.

2014 Barolo DOCG
Usually $92- Special Offer $85 - Add to Cart

The 2014 Barolo is a wine of sublime elegance, finesse and nuance. The level of detail here is quite striking. Fragrant and lilting in the glass and deceptively medium in body, this pristine Barolo is all class. Readers who can find it should not hesitate, as it is superb, not to mention one of the best straight 2014 Barolos I tasted.

2014 Barolo 'Margheria' DOCG
Usually $178 - Special Offer $165 - Add to Cart

Rose petal, dried cherry, kirsch, mint, sage and licorice give the 2014 Barolo Margheria much of its beguiling, nuanced personality. Deceptive in its midweight structure, it packs a serious punch. The sinewy, potent Serralunga tannins need time to soften a bit, but I don't think that will be an issue given how impeccably balanced the 2014 is in the early going. A bit of air brings out the wine's explosive persistence and drive. A closing flourish of sage, tobacco and kirsch rounds things out in style. The only open question is how much time the 2014 needs, because it is clearly a gorgeous wine in the making.

2014 Barolo 'Parafada' DOCG
Usually $180 - Special Offer $169 - Add to Cart

Playing true to type, the 2014 Barolo Parafada is a bit more powerful and dense through the middle than the other Serralunga Barolos in the range. Deep and concentrated - especially in the context of the year - the Parafada presents an intriguing mélange of sweet tobacco, mint, dried cherry and underbrush nuances before the firm, sinewy Serralunga tannins make their presence known. The Parafada is not as refined as the other wines in the lineup, but it has a certain immediacy that is undeniably appealing. I would give it a few years to unwind.

2012 Barolo 'Vigna Rionda' Riserva DOCG
750ml Usually $310 - Special Offer $289 - Add to Cart
1500ml Usually $630 - Special Offer $589 - Add to Cart

Readers will find a silky, nuanced Barolo in the 2012 Riserva Vigna Rionda. Rose water, orange zest, cinnamon, sage, mint and dried cherry are some of the many nuances that give the 2012 its aromatic top notes, and all of the elements fall into place effortlessly. Relatively open-knit for a young Rionda, this should drink well with minimal cellaring. The 2012 doesn't quite have the explosive energy of vintages like 2010, 2013 or 2014, but it will offer tons of pleasure sooner than any of those wines. I loved it.
