Hot New Release - 2018 Samuel Billaud Chablis

by Hugh French | Oct 06, 2020

One of the best producers of 2018 Chablis
Samuel Billaud

Samuel Billaud is considered to be one of the select few outstanding producers in Chablis. The vineyards are on average 30 years of age and are located in the “Les Pargues”, “Le Chapelot” and "Les Quarts" climats. Minuscule quantities available, so we expect them not to last long.

"...A couple of growers transcended the growing season and produced a clutch of outstanding wines that you might misconstrue as heralding the vintage. Certainly, Samuel Billaud conjured from his magic hat a set of magnificent 2018s that, when juxtaposed against their peers, almost exaggerated their intensity andmineralité...'

2018 Petit Chablis
Usually $48 - Special Offer $43

Billaud's 2018 Petit Chablis offers lovely depth and textural richness at this level, all while maintaining a good bit of freshness as well. Lemon confit and lifted floral notes add a good bit of energy. I very much like the wine's tension and verve, both of which are unusual in 2018.

2018 Chablis
Usually $63 - Special Offer $56

The 2018 Chablis Village comes from 4 hectares of 35-year-old vines and spends 12–15 months on the lees. It conveys more fruit intensity than the Petit Chablis, as you would expect, scents of tangerine and clementine emerging with a couple of swirls. The palate is vibrant on the entry, displaying a fine bead of acidity that keeps this Chablis on its toes. What it lacks in complexity is compensated with joie-de-vivre. Enjoy this over the next 5–7 years.

2018 Chablis 1er Cru 'Vaillons' VV
Usually $99 - Special Offer $95

The 2018 Chablis Vaillons Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru is shaping up to be a real beauty. Powerful and resonant in the glass, the 2018 is racy, ample and so expressive. Orchard fruit, almond and dried flowers are some of the many aromas and flavors that develop in the glass. Readers will find a powerful, virile Chablis endowed with richness and structure to burn. I can't wait to taste it from bottle.

2018 Chablis 1er Cru 'Sechets' VV
Usually $99 - Special Offer $95

The 2018 Chablis Séchet Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru comes from 0.60ha of 80-year-old vines and spends 18 months on the fine lees. It bides its time in the glass. Discreet at first, it gradually unfurls to reveal quite intense marine aromas of shucked oyster shells and sea cave. This is very well defined but it clearly benefits from decanting. The palate is lively on the entry, presenting a lovely lick of salinity right from the start. Fine energy here, and great focus, with just a touch of spice coming through on the finish and aftertaste. A very fine Séchet from M. Billaud. Recommended.

2018 Chablis 1er Cru 'Mont de Milieu'
Usually $99 - Special Offer $95

The 2018 Chablis Mont de Milieu 1er Cru is one of the stand outs in this range. Ample and creamy, the 2018 is so wonderfully inviting, even in the early going. All the elements just come together effortlessly. Orchard fruit, citrus confit, spice, wild flowers and a touch of new oak all grace this super-expressive Chablis. The 2018 was done 80% in tank and 20% in a 450-liter oak barrel.
Antonio Galloni, vinous.com - 92-94 Points

2018 Chablis 1er Cru 'Montee de Tonnerre'
Usually $115 - Special Offer $108

The 2018 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru comes from a hectare of 45-year-old vines and was vinified in stainless steel vats and 450-liter barrels before aging for 18 months on the lees. It has a pretty nose of orange blossom, white peach and Japanese yuzu scents that are beautifully defined. The palate is very well balanced, with Granny Smith apples and pear on the entry, a vibrant thread of acidity, and quite a linear, taut finish that is perhaps more 2017 in style. Overall, this is a superb Montée de Tonnerre for those who like "classic" Chablis.
