Working at a thoughtful, unhurried pace, Nous Wines has emerged as one of New Zealand's most compelling modern producers. The wines combine generosity and depth with a clear sense of freshness and nuance, offering richness without weight and detail without excess.
The project is centred on a single vineyard of just 0.29 hectares, established from bare ground by Rachael and Murray Cook. The minute scale allows for close attention at every stage, from vineyard development through to harvest, and all production comes exclusively from this one site. Quantities are, by necessity, extremely limited.
Fruit profiles lean fresh and savoury rather than ripe and unduly broad, acidity is finely tuned, and textures feel composed and deliberate. There's an immediacy that makes them engaging on release, but also enough structure and detail to suggest it will evolve beautifully over time. Nothing feels forced.
Alongside Nous, Rachael and Murray work locally at Dog Point Vineyard, an experience that informs the practical, measured approach taken here. The focus is on sound viticulture and restrained winemaking, with an emphasis on balance and clarity rather than stylistic imprint. Each wine is shaped by the conditions of the season, not by a fixed formula.
Only three vintages have been released so far. As with any young vineyard, long-term consistency is still to be established and will depend on how the site performs across a broader range of seasons. What is already evident is a steady refinement from vintage to vintage, suggesting careful observation and incremental adjustments to enhance the Cooks' singular release further.
Nous offers something straightforward but rare: a chance to follow a vineyard from its earliest chapters. It remains a small, tightly focused project. Each release offers a clear expression of a single vineyard at a particular moment in its development.
