Founded in 1958, Produttori del Barbaresco stands as one of Piedmont’s most enduring and quietly influential estates. What began as a small group of growers banding together to protect the identity of Barbaresco has evolved into a benchmark cooperative, now comprising more than 50 families farming over 100 hectares across Barbaresco, Neive and Treiso.
Despite its scale, the philosophy remains unchanged. Each grower tends their own vineyards, many of them in prime, historic sites, while the élevage and final blending are handled centrally with a singular focus: to produce wines that reflect the clarity, structure and nuance of Nebbiolo from Barbaresco. The result is a house style that has become a reference point for the region, transparent, composed and remarkably consistent from vintage to vintage.
At the core of the range sits the Barbaresco Classico. Sourced from vineyards across the appellation, including parcels within or bordering the crus, it is both an introduction to the estate and a distillation of its identity. In strong vintages, a portion of fruit is diverted to the celebrated single vineyard Riservas. In others, the full production is retained within the Classico, giving the wine additional depth and breadth.
The 2022 vintage presented a very different set of conditions to recent years. A warm, dry growing season reduced yields and brought forward ripening, placing an emphasis on careful picking decisions to preserve balance and freshness. Across Barbaresco, the best wines show a combination of open knit fruit and underlying structure, approachable in youth yet far from simple.
The 2022 Produttori del Barbaresco Classico captures this well. There is an immediate generosity to the fruit profile, red cherry, plum and subtle spice, alongside the lifted floral notes that define Nebbiolo from these hills. On the palate, the wine is supple but structured, with fine, persistent tannins and a line of acidity that keeps everything in check. It is a touch more expansive than cooler vintages, but remains firmly grounded in the house style, precise, balanced and unmistakably Barbaresco.
As ever, what distinguishes Produttori is not just quality, but reliability. Few wines at this level offer such a consistent articulation of place year after year, and fewer still deliver it with this degree of accessibility. The Classico continues to serve as one of the most compelling entry points to Barbaresco, both for those coming to the region for the first time and for those who return to it each vintage.
A wine that speaks clearly of its origin, and of a producer that has defined the standard for more than six decades.
