    White Burgundy of Immense Value

    by Hugh French | Nov 25, 2021

    Stephane Aladame

As I wrote last year, Stéphane Aladame is one of Montagny's leading lights. His wines are pure, charming and worth seeking out.
    William Kelley, The Wine Advocate

Within a picture of modest aspirations, Stéphane Aladame has emerged as something of a lone wolf. Bringing the insight and fresh rigour of a self-made grower, the young graduate set up shop in Montagny-les-Buxy at the ripe age of 18, renting three hectares of vines from a retiring grower. Since that time, he has earned an outstanding reputation in France, and the Domaine has grown to eight hectares (with seven of those classed as Premier Cru).

Like all of France's most driven winegrowers, Aladame works tirelessly in his vineyards to produce the highest standards of grapes possible. The vineyards are densely planted, Stéphane works the soils (often by horse) and yields are kept thoughtfully low. Thanks to scale and to proximity, the harvesting is precise—and naturally, by hand.

    2020 Bourgogne Blanc ‘Mon Blanc’
    Usually $55 - Special Offer $50

From a vintage filled with curve balls, the 2020 Aladame Bourgogne Mon Blanc is a testament to the aromatically fresh and tension-filled wines one can expect from the best addresses this year. Running straight out of the gates with a complex and layered aromatic profile, the wine is a study in texture, packed full of phenolic grip and grapefruit pith. There is minerality and cool freshness that provides a frame around a generous fruit profile. An intensely driven finish belies the price point—serious bang for your white Burgundy buck here.

    2020 Montagny ‘Prelude’
    Usually $65 - Special Offer $58

The name says it all: Prélude is the entry-level Montagny, sourced from the vineyards of Le May (Saint-Vallerin) and Les Coères (Montagny). It was raised for 10 months, in a combination of tank (60%) and older barrels (40%). In contrast to the Mon Blanc, the villages cuvée displays more volume, yet it remains braced by a consistent thread of acidity. A feeling of nervy tension as well as a finely honed citrus flavour contribute weight to the solid skeleton—structure supports richness. It's delicious, charming value, and has been described by Jasper Morris as "An exemplary source of characterful Montagny".

    2019 Montagny 1er Cru ‘Decourverte’
    Usually $75 - Special Offer $67

Layered with complexity, there is orchard fruit, nutty undertones and an intriguing savoury edge. The palate is rich and generous with a viscosity carried by an assertive acid line, phenolic grip and a mid-palate fleshiness. The finish is concentrated, powerful and savoury. Chablis in southern shoes. In other words, we love it.

2019 Montagny 1er Cru ‘Les Coeres’
    Usually $95 - Special Offer $85

The 2019 is packed with stone fruits, orange zest and custard apple, with strong supporting roles of slate-like minerality and savoury green herbs. It’s zesty and perfumed with enticing ripeness and excellent intensity, cut by a seamlessly interwoven acid line. Exuding phenolic tension, a touch of spice on the finish adds to the allure. This is a definitive step up in density, yet it maintains the finesse, vibrancy and definition that are key to the Domaine’s style.
