Josh Cooper | The final Balgownie 1970 vines release

    by Hugh French | Aug 12, 2026
    PRODPAGE HEADER_JOSHCOOPER

    Victoria

    Joshua Cooper

    About the producer

Joshua Cooper is the son of Alan and Nelly Cooper of Cobaw Ridge, and it was on that Macedon Ranges vineyard that he first learned the craft. After studying oenology at the University of Adelaide, he spent the following years working vintages further afield, including stints at Chalmers, M. Chapoutier's Heathcote project, Hewitson in the Barossa, and Domaine de la Vougeraie and Domaine Jean-Jacques Confuron in Burgundy, before returning to Macedon and starting his own label in 2012. His approach is single-vineyard: fruit sourced from a small number of exceptional, established sites across Macedon and central Victoria, farmed by growers who share his commitment to organics and sustainability. Cooper works with minimal intervention across his Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, and was named Halliday Wine Companion's Best New Winery for 2024.

EST. 2012 SINGLE-VINEYARD FOCUS MACEDON RANGES & CENTRAL VICTORIA

    The 2025 vintage

Victoria's 2025 growing season broke from the cooler, wetter years either side of it. A warm, dry run through summer brought an earlier harvest than usual across the state, with steady ripening and low disease pressure delivering fruit of real purity and concentration. In the cooler sites of Macedon and central Victoria, that combination of warmth and dryness translated into wines with generous fruit definition alongside the natural acid line these high-altitude sites are known for, a vintage set up well for both immediate drinking and the cellar.

    In this release

Stuart Anderson planted the original vines at Maiden Gully in 1969, and the cabernet and shiraz he coaxed from this Bendigo site through the 1970s and 80s built Balgownie's reputation as one of Victoria's great vineyards. Anderson sold the property decades ago, but the site has continued to produce fruit of real distinction, including the small parcel of old-vine cabernet sauvignon Joshua Cooper has sourced each year for his 1970 Block bottling. Following the recent sale of the Bendigo site to property developers, this 2025 release will almost certainly be the last wine made from these original plantings, a fitting final chapter for one of the sites that shaped Victorian winemaking.

"It's with tremendous sadness that this will almost certainly be our final vintage of wine made from Balgownie, a site rich with significance to the industry as a whole, and to us on a personal level. We trust this final release will be a fitting celebration of this special vineyard and everything it has represented over the last six decades."

    — Joshua Cooper

    Dash Farms Vineyard Chardonnay 2025

Planted in 1999 · Mt. Alexander · Chardonnay

    94

    POINTS

Dashin' through the snow, on a one horse open sleigh.

A little puppy fat, a little creaminess, the tickle of brine and talc-like minerality. That's the story so far. Bold perfume, lots of flavour, pleasing, balanced, yet generous. Lemon curd and baked apple, a touch of shortbread and thin, ginger biscuit. Absolute delight, in a fuller profile, yet with all the hallmark vitality expected. Right on.

500m altitude · Macedon Ranges · Pinot Noir

    POINTS

    Go Doug!

Slippery, refreshing, cool and bright. A sleek pinot noir of compact nature with a sheath of very fine, lacy tannins, tart cherry fruitiness, rose hip tea tang and grip, a little herbal twist somewhere in there too. A lick of game meat and truffle barely there. Elegance and restraint here. Ripper.

The rise and rise of cabernet profile under the care of Joshua Cooper is a force. An overlay of cool. And history. And respect. A thing.

This is succulent, refreshing, blue fruited, alpine herb laced, super cool, and yet curiously on the cusp of vibrant ripeness, and quasi-nouveau in its feel all at once. Phew! More full than expected and yet trimmed with the slip of glossy tannin is the deal. The suction of pumice stone grip gently finishing things a treat. A wine of glorious drinkability.

Balgownie Vineyard 1970 Block Cabernet Sauvignon 2025

Final vintage · Maiden Gully · Cabernet Sauvignon

    95+

    POINTS

This could be the last we see of this wine and site? Maybe.

It's a substantial and quietly powerful wine. Massive inward concentration, inky texture, grippy, silty tannin in a web shaping things, huge perfume of wild berries and mint and chocolate and sooty spice. The palate, a delight, a flowing, sleek thing of darkness, woody spice and savoury things. Dustiness here in a good way. There's a distinct kind of old school, good school feel here, perhaps pushed through a modern lens, but leaning into more laid back, wine-for-cellaring vibes. And yet, the finesse seeps into things and convinces you to drink now. Compelling.
