About the producer
Callum Powell grew up around the Torbreck cellars his father Dave Powell founded. He started his own career with a vintage at Jean-Louis Chave in Hermitage, then came home to cut his teeth at Tyrrell's, Paul Osicka, Jasper Hill and Wild Duck Creek, before five years alongside his father again under the Powell & Son label, and striking out alone in 2018 with three barrels of Shiraz.
Agricola has grown since, but the model hasn't changed: relationships with growers and the land Callum grew up on. The Hoffmann family's century-old Ebenezer vineyards, the Asbroek family's 1864 plantings at Kalimna, and Callum's own home vineyard and neighbouring sites in Flaxman Valley, where he lives. In 2025 that list grew to include the Steinert family's vineyard planted around 1900 on the southern side of Flaxman Valley, the source of two new wines this year.
In the winery, Callum works with native yeast, 100% whole-bunch ferments and minimal handling: long, cold ferments without inoculated yeast, gravity-fed movements and maturation on gross lees. He's part of the new wave in the Barossa, alongside names like Sami-Odi, Setiono and Standish: leaner, more site-driven, and more finely tannic. This developing trend in the Barossa is exciting and shows incredible potential to produce elegant and nuanced wines with real age worthiness and are simply a delight to drink.
