Anyone who loves Australian Pinot Noir knows that Tasmania is building a formidable reputation as one of the best places in the country to grow it (they're going ok with Sparkling and Chardonnay too, but that's a story for another day). Ten years ago, wine lists just referred to Tasmania as a homogenous region but what we see now is incredible diversity around the island, from the elegant and pretty styles of the north to the more powerful masculine styles of the south.
Today we have two wonderfully different exponents of Pinot Noir from the Apple Isle with Sailor Seeks Horse in the Huon Valley (south) and Joe Holyman's Stoney Rise in the Tamar Valley (north). Stocks are limited, so get in quick to ensure you don't miss out.

For Gilli and Paul Lipscombe, the goal has always been to craft the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in Australia. After meeting in London in 2005, the young couple decided to follow one of three passions; wine, cricket or Spanish dancing. Luckily for us, it was wine they decided to pursue. Scouring Australia for the best site they could find, a 6.5 ha plot of existing vines in the Huon Valley became available, and they lept on it. The vineyard had been walked away from in 2005, most of the vines that had been planted there were dead or missing, and blackberries had overgrown all that remained. Reinstating this vineyard was going to be no easy feat. Still, Gilli and Paul saw the enormous potential here, and after their first vintage in 2013 was released to critical acclaim, the couple's drive and talent became overwhelmingly apparent.

2018 Pinot Noir
Usually $60 - Special Offer $55
"An elegant wine that highlights its cool climate credentials with cherry perfume spiked with pepper and juniper, all leading out onto a lean but not mean palate. Tannins supple, fine and savoury and the all important lively acidity. Feels effortless. Immediately delicious."

Jane Faulkner, The Wine Companion
"Red cherry, English garden and exotic spices, just a touch of dusty cedar oak. It’s fresh, clean and bright, red fruits, a fine dusty tannin texture, clean lines, lively and distinct in personality, with white pepper and a mouthful of strawberries direct from the fridge on a nice long finish. Like this. Intriguing."

Stoney Rise Wine Company is located in the heart of the Tamar Valley in Northern Tasmania. It is a family-run winery owned by Joe and Lou Holyman.
In 2004 they returned to Tasmania with their sights set on growing and producing the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay the ycould. They purchased a vineyard planted in 1986 in the Tamar Valley, north of Launceston and set about doing just that. 2008 saw the construction of their own winery on site.
Stoney Rise isn't afraid to push the boundaries in their winemaking style and their tireless efforts in the vineyard ensure they have great fruit to work with consistently.

2019 Holyman Pinot Noir
Usually $54 - Special Offer $49
"Clean and frank nose of red and blue flowers with plum, cherry and a suggestion of blackberry. Subtle complexity on closer inspection; cake spices, a touch of cedar, dried herbs and gravelly earth tones. The entry is fairly firm and reserved. It’s elegant and chiselled on the palate, channelling the red-to-black fruits of the nose. There are pleasing savoury nuances of graphite and liquorice on the finish, which is focused and long with a dab of black-cherry fruit. The acidity doesn’t bite but rather guides its length, with a build-up of firm, chalky tannins. Young and fine Pinot Noir. Just 12% alcohol."
