In 1988Michael Hill Smith had just completed the gruelling Master of Wine examination. The following year, teaming up with cousin Martin Shaw, Shaw + Smith was founded. The vision being, a 'virtual winery' with a steadfast commitment to sourcing only the best fruit from the best growers.
1999 saw the purchase of the current property in Balhannah, with the first Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc vines being planted in 2000. Now with greater vine age, those plantings are offering more depth and complexity, and the inclusion of Senior Winemaker Adam Wadewitz (Len Evans Tutorial Dux) has solidified the continuing commitment to wines of the highest quality.
With some fantastic scores from critics across the board, the new release from Shaw + Smith once again achieves the extremely high standard that has come to be expected from this top-class Adelaide Hills producer. Beware the siren with the ruby-red lips. In a smoky room, here she strides- confident, cool, arresting. Slender, stalky cherry and a smear of blackcurrant bite, spiked with crushed peppercorns. No sunny smiles here, this is deadly serious. Leaner, finer and taut, it marks a big stride ahead from previous vintages. This vision of cool-climate shiraz marks a new age of measured sophistication.

Tightly wound, very precise, lemon zest, flint, struck match, light cinnamon spice, faintly creamy but oh so subtle, exceptional length, understatement, a sense of drive and vitality. Smooth mover. No hair out of place. Pedigree gear. Luxury wine. Fancy from the get go. Actually, straight up delicious too and wonderfully seasoned. Superb example of modern Australian chardonnay. A benchmark where lean, racier style manages flavour and deliciousness. Kudos.

2019 Lenswood Vineyard Pinot Noir

The type of taut, edgy Pinot Noir the Adelaide Hills has struggled to capture, despite the region being heavily planted to the variety. This is a model of winemaking restraint, allowing the vineyard to shine, with fleshy cherry and a hint of tart mandarin providing comfort, though its firm acidity and stalky grip ensures good structure and svelte line.

2018 Balhannah Vineyard Shiraz

Excellent wine with so much detail, complexity, silken texture, spice lavishly draped over it all, savouriness and game meat richness, pure, cherry juice scents and flavours about that. Perfect medium weight zone, vibrant fruit character, all that perfume and additional flavour so very good here. And tannins, beautiful, beautiful caress of fine, lacy, gently puckering tannins. Top class stuff. Real pedigree. Moreish and delicious too. Kudos, S+S team.
