Gembrook Hill - Finesse, elegance, harmony and balance

by Hugh French | Sep 07, 2021

2019 Gembrook Hill

The style of the wines is a naturally occurring combination of finesse, elegance, harmony and balance...
James Halliday, The Australian

In 1983, Ian and June Marks found their vineyard site after a long search for the perfect pocket of land throughout almost every wine region in Victoria. With views of Mt Donna Buang, a backdrop of the Warburton ranges, red soil and a coveted north-easterly aspect, it is the perfect spot for cool climate winemaking.

We're big fans of the wines of Gembrook Hill, one of the most consistent producers in the Yarra Valley. Today we have their 2019 Estate Chardonnay and Pinot Noir available, a welcome addition to any table or cellar.

Both wines below are available now at our special offer prices for the next 7 days only. To place your order, simply click on the links below or return the attached form, by email, by fax on 03 9419 6970 or call us on 03 9419 6990.

2019 Chardonnay
Usually $47 - Special Offer $43

Yields were down but quality high, although this wine seems to rise to the occasion no matter the season. Acidity takes charge this vintage, but in between there's grapefruit, barely-ripe white nectarine, a dash of ginger spice and some nutty/leesy influences giving it a flavoursome edge and texture. It's tight across the palate, defining good cellaring potential, yet its countenance makes it easy to enjoy now.

2019 Pinot Noir
Usually $55 - Special Offer $50

Yes, this is unequivocally Yarra Valley, but it is far more distinctive of Gembrook Hill. It's the prettiness, the aromatic allure, the seemingly gentle palate, yet tannins are silky, the acidity just-so, with every element on the same wavelength. Just as Van Morrison sang: ‘Wavelength. You never let me down, ah no.'

We’re in business with this 2019 release. The 2019 vintage produced a small crop: there will be no IJM and JKM iterations.
Super release. The combination of tension, texture and refreshment is just so perfectly judged. It’s its usual light-but-strong self with red cherry and cranberry into forest berries and twiggy spice, with cedar and a touch of smoky reduction suiting the style perfectly. Tannin manages a kind of dry command without every threatening to intrude. Cool herb notes come into play too. It’s an absolute beauty.
