The Precise Wines of Arnaud Lambert

by Hugh French | Sep 07, 2021

Arnaud Lambert

”One of the most talented winemakers in the Loire . . . Good vine age counts for a lot, his talent just as much. A benchmark winery!”
Bettane & Desseauve, Top 100 Producers Of France

Alongside the now cult Clos Rougeard, Domaine Arnaud Lambert is a quality leader in the Saumur and Saumur-Champigny appellations of The Loire Valley. He doesn’t want massive wines, rather he looks for precision, and a balance between the attack and the finish, with a very clear expression of the soil. That soil is predominantly tuffeau, a porous chalky limestone, giving finely mineral wines – dry Chenin Blanc for the whites and Cabernet Franc for the reds.

We tasted the2019 Perrieres and firmly believe this is one of the best value French whites when comparing to Burgundy and beyond.

“Lambert’s style arcs toward grace. His wines are stripped down and elemental, ripped with acidity and verve.”
Rajat Parr, The Sommeliers Atlas of Taste

‘"While Rougeard’s work draws comparisons to Bordeaux, it really is that more complicated Burgundian model—vinifying individual parcels of both red and white, and striving to understand the differences—that captivates Saumur’s current pioneers, who’ve seen the opportunity to follow in Rougeard’s wake. For Lambert, it’s a matter of delineating the clear line between his easy-going, citrusy Clos David, grown on a sandy northeast-facing plot in Brézé, and his intensely herbal, fleshy Clos de la Rue, grown just a few hundred yards away on clay."

2019 Saumur Blanc St-Cyr-En-Bourg 'Les Perrieres'
Usually $54 - Special Offer $47

"From vines averaging 65 year old on silt soil over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast after separating free run and press juices and aged in a combination of older foudres and barrels. Bottled late 2020 after 12 months ageing on fine lees and shows very immediate lifted fruit on the aromas and palate. Very clear expression of fruit with building intensity and very good length and shape on the palate. Ample substance here to enable this wine to age for 5+ years. Arnaud describes that he is looking for wines that show no oxidation that are clean and pure."

2016 Saumur Blanc St-Cyr-En-Bourg 'Coulee de St-Cyr'
Usually $89 - Special Offer $79

"From vines averaging 70 year old on about 30cm of clay over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast after separating free run and press juices and aged on fine lees for 12 months in a combination of older foudres and barrels. The wine is then returned to tank for another 8 months of ageing on fine lees. This is deep and complex with a touch of noble reduction giving more than a nod to Burgundy in terms of texture and structure."

2016 Saumur Blanc Breze 'Clos David' Monopole
Usually $86 - Special Offer $75

"From a 1.3 ha north-east facing site planted in 1965 on light sandy soil over limestone. Vinified with indigenous yeast and vinified 50% in aged foudres and 50% in barrel (15% new) and aged on fine lees. Fine and discrete on the aromas yet a notable step up in complexity and depth. Very long and intense with great precision on the palate, not at all fat or soft this shows lively citric acid giving great length and shape to the palate."

2017 Saumur Blanc Breze 'Clos de la Rue' Monopole
Usually $119 - Special Offer $109

"From a 2 ha south facing site planted half 1965 and half 1990 on sandy soil over clay with a limestone base. Whole cluster pressed for 4.5 hours. Juice is selected with the first 25% of the press juice and the last 30 minutes of the press juice declassified and blended into the entry-level appellation wines.Batonnage (stirring of the lees) is made toward the end of the primary fermentation and for some months after the wine is dry to “open up the wines” and work against reduction. The first SO2 addition is made just before bottling. This shows notable acid freshness giving great length and shape on the palate. Very long with terrific complexity and ageing potential."
