Envinate

Envínate, which literally translates as “Wine Yourself,” is the project of four young passionate winemakers: Roberto Santana (based in the Canaries), Jose Martinez (Almansa), Laura Ramos (Murcia) and Alfonso Torrente (Ribeira Sacra). The four met while studying oenology in Alicante in 2005 and formed a collective based on a shared philosophy of wine and a desire to explore the ancient, Atlantic influenced terroirs of western Spain.

Comando G

The vines worked by Comando G are between 50-80 years old, grown organically on granitic soil with occasional biodynamic treatments. The focus here is first and foremost on the vineyards, each parcel is meticulously cared for, managed only by hand and by horse drawn plow, without any synthetic additives. All of the vineyards sit at extreme altitudes, between 850 and 1,200 meters. The mentality here is very Burgundian, each wine is identified by place name, village name, valley name, always seeking to show that each wine they produce is purely reflective of the site on which it grows.

2019 Vinos de Madrid 'La Bruja De Rozas' Garnacha

A pretty nose of redcurrants, cranberries, dried flowers, grapefruit and rosemary. It’s medium-bodied with sleek tannins and crisp acidity. Fresh and crunchy with juicy character. Succulent and pure with a flavorful finish. Better in a year or two, but already really excellent.

Daniel Gomez Jimenez-Landi

Daniel Landi, of Comando G fame, keeps producing small amounts of wines under his own name from vineyards that he started gathering when he was part of his family winery Jiménez-Landi in Méntrida.
Luis Gutiérrez, The Wine Advocate

The vines are mirrors of everything around them. With this belief we work and we strive every day. At the soul of the grapes is the climate where the vines grow: soils, orientation, height, landscape and nearby vegetation, everything impacts on the grapes. Also the human part is important. We believe that the mood of those who work the vineyard and wine, his spirit, his circumstances, his mind, his way of feeling and transmitting impacts in winemaking. I do not understand wine as something mechanical, industrial, artificial or impersonal, but rather the result of the landscape, the history of the people and the individual.
Daniel Landi, Winemaker

Dominio del Aguila

It’s difficult to find something to write about Dominio del Águila that hasn’t already been written before by someone with better qualifications than me. Peter Sisseck of Dominio de Pingus called it the most exciting new project in Ribera del Duero. Luis Gutierrez refers to them as having leapt straight to the top of the quality hierarchy in just a couple of years. In the last Wine Advocate roundup for Ribera two of the Dominio del Águila wines were in the top five for the region. The other three of the top five all retail for more than a $1000. Although all the kudos is great for the young husband and wife team behind Dominio del Águila, what’s more important is what they are actually doing. Big scores and big praise is not a new thing in Ribera del Duero, but the approach and skill they bring to the region is a true rarity.

2018 Ribera del Duero 'Picaro del Aguila' V.V.

Usually $65 - Special Offer $59

This is their most approachable red, and it has the depth, concentration and nuance of the best wines from many wineries. It's produced in a more jovial style, but the wine comes from old vines that always have a field blend with small percentages of whatever grapes that are all fermented together, and these vines always produce a serious and deep wine. In 2018, it matured in French oak barrels for 11 months. This is very young and tender, expressive and aromatic, very much in line with the 2016. It has lots of energy and power, more than you might think, and it's serious. It's drinkable now, but it should get even better with some time in bottle.

2016 Ribera del Duero Reserva

Usually $149 - Special Offer $139

Quite different from the 2015 was the 2016 Reserva, a red from a cooler year with good yields, so they were able to increase production of this wine over twofold and increase the quality! It took some seven months to complete fermentation, and the élevage in barrel lasted some 29 months. It has an incredible nose, violets and something musky, intriguing, complex and nuanced, mysterious and difficult to define, with some notes reminiscent of soy sauce. The palate is seamless and with terrific balance, a silky texture and very fine but chalky tannins. This is an amazing Ribera del Duero.

La Rioja Alta

La Rioja Alta is one of the guardians of traditional Rioja. The company was founded by merging vineyards of five local families in 1890 and these families are still in control of the company. La Rioja Alta and Lopez de Heredia are generally considered the last two houses who are remaining loyal to the classic profile of traditional Rioja. Yet change and innovation have not been avoided. When methodical experimentation has shown that changes to viticulture and vinification can improve the wine without sacrificing style or aging potential, then the winery has updated its techniques. Often these experiments will run for a decade before the results are deemed conclusive and a practice adopted...The winery uses only estate grown grapes and practices organic viticulture. Vineyards are vinified separately, then blended into the respective cuvees before extended barrel and bottle maturation...These are wines of surprising lightness and delicacy with immense aging potential.

2012 Rioja 'Vina Ardanza' Reserva

Usually $95 - Special Offer $84

Traditional and beautiful in character with plum, balsamic, orange-peel and leather aromas and flavors. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy texture and a long, intense aftertaste. Drink or hold.

Puro Rofe

Puro Rofe is a young project. The first commercially released vintage was 2018 although they made wine in ‘16 and ‘17 before fully committing to the project. It’s composed of the extremely talented young winemaker and Canary native Carmelo Pena with viticulture handled by Vicente Tower, an artist by trade but also a Lanzarote local who’s family’s vineyards provide the backbone of the Puro Rofe project.

2019 Lanzarote 'Tilama'

Usually $79 - Special Offer $72

The 2019 Tilama is Malvasía Volcánica from the Tilama zone of the village of Tinajo in Lanzarote, and it has a saline quality as the vines are very close to the sea and the plants get sea breeze that brings salt. In 2019, the wine is 12.2% alcohol and has very high acidity, eight grams, with a very healthy pH of 3.1. The vines are centenary and are buried in holes in the volcanic ash to trap humidity and protect them from the wind and the soils amazingly enough, for such volcanic place that also has some limestone. The clusters were foot trodden in a traditional lagar pool and the wine matured in used 228- and 500-liter oak barrels for eight months. This is super clean, intense, sharp and crystalline, serious and intense. I think there is a big jump in quality here from the 2018, irrespective of the style of the vintage. This is very defined and has symmetry, precision, saline, the idea of an amazing white from the lunar landscapes of Lanzarote.
