Beechworth has to be the most exciting wine-growing region in Australia at the moment. In the wake of winemaking legends such as Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda, young, super talented and energetic faces are starting to make their mark producing outstanding wines of the region. In a relatively short time, Tess Brown and her husband Jeremy Schmolzer have turned a cleared field high up in the hills behind Beechworth into a site full of potential to become one of the most impressive cool-climate sites in Australia. Their wines are fine and elegant, extremely well balanced and finessed. Below we have their latest single vineyard release (or at least what we could get of it). 2019 Brunnen Chardonnay

Chardonnay from the cool, shadowy, Brunnen site in the upper reaches of the Beechworth region. 110 dozen made. The Brunnen vineyard is run organically, unofficially.
I had to sit with this for a while because it really takes time to open up. It’s a lean style, direct in a way though its subtleties are complex. It tastes of lemon curd and slate, steel and white peach, with angles of green pineapple and garden herbs, fennel perhaps. There’s an attractive whisper of smoked honey but for all these aspects it’s the direct line, the length, and the overall impression of precision that really makes you sit up and take notice.

2019 Brunnen Pinot Noir

110 dozen bottled. One day I’m going to go and take some video footage of the Brunnen vineyard because it really is a unique spot.
We’re in good territory here. Bass and treble are pitched just so, complexity comes unforced, it’s drinking well now but it will develop well. Darker cherry and forest berry characters, rippling acidity, undergrowth and fresh garden herbs, flowers intact. It’s a beautiful, fragrant, fine-fingered red wine.

2019 Thorley Shiraz

This is the third vintage of shiraz off the estate Thorley vineyard which, as previously noted, sits at 820 metres. 87 dozen were produced this year.
Terrific cool climate shiraz. A truly beautiful wine. Sage, black cherry, woodsy-peppery spice, a veneer of smoked cedar wood, a gentle meatiness and then more berries, more fruit. Tannin laces its way through the back half of the wine; acidity keeps everything straight, not to mention juicy. It’s beautifully balanced and so, accordingly, it’s in great drinking shape already, right now. No hesitation on this one.

2019 Nebbiolo

There’s a sweetness to the fruit here, the influence of down-the-hill fruit is clear, though the flavour profile remains exotic and complex. Blood oranges, sweet cherry, loads of woodsy spice and rounds of crushed roses. It finishes dry and firm but not overtly so; the juiciness of the fruit refuses to let go. It’s a pretty impressive wine, not to mention delicious. It also boasts more than its fair share of finesse. It’s a one-off release and I have to say, it’s a beauty.
