Gorgeous 2018 Barolo from Brezza

by Hugh French | Nov 03, 2022

Brezza

The Brezza family have owned and operated their winery on the outskirts ofBarolo since 1885. Now under the watchful eye of fourth generation Brezza - Enzo, the winery has reached new heights in terms of quality but remains staunchly traditional. All wines undergo long, spontaneous ferments/maceration (25-30 days is the norm), with the upper-tiered wines spending lengthy spells in large Slavonian botti. These new 2018 releases are stunning, unfortunately, no Riserva was made but the best lots destined for the Riserva wine were blended into the 2018Sarmassa.

2018 Barolo DOCG
Usually $119 - Special Offer $108

"The 2018 Barolo is a very pretty entry-level wine from Brezza. Floral, spiced and lifted, the 2018 is absolutely gorgeous. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petal, mint and blood orange lend quite a bit of nuance. More than anything else, I am quite taken by the wine's depth and mid-palate resonance. Vineyard sources are San Lorenzo, Fossati, Bricco San Pietro and Ravera"
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2018Barolo 'Cannubi' DOCG
Usually $149 - Special Offer $139

"The 2018 Barolo Cannubi is attractive, but also embryonic. Sweet tobacco, cedar, leather, dried herbs and crushed rose petal emerge, but only with some reluctance. Silky Cannubi tannins lend finesse, suggesting what is to come. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2018 is going to need a few years to be fully expressive. The 2018 is suave and very nicely balanced, especially for the year."
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media

2018Barolo 'Sarmassa' DOCG
Usually $169 - Special Offer $153

"The 2018 Barolo Sarmassa benefits from the addition of the fruit that would have gone into the Riserva. A Barolo of breadth and power, the Sarmassa possesses terrific depth and plenty of substance. Dark plum, gravel, cured meat, smoke, licorice and incense add to a feeling of somber gravitas. I won't be surprised if the 2018 turns out to be even better than this note suggests. Hints of dried herb, menthol, licorice, tobacco and incense linger on a finish graced with notable aromatic complexity."
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media
