Dominio del Aguila

"It’s difficult to find something to write about Dominio del Águila that hasn’t already been written before by someone with better qualifications than me. Peter Sisseck of Dominio de Pingus called it the most exciting new project in Ribera del Duero. Luis Gutierrez refers to them as having leapt straight to the top of the quality hierarchy in just a couple of years. In the last Wine Advocate roundup for Ribera two of the Dominio del Águila wines were in the top five for the region. The other three of the top five all retail for more than a $1000. Although all the kudos is great for the young husband and wife team behind Dominio del Águila, what’s more important is what they are actually doing. Big scores and big praise is not a new thing in Ribera del Duero, but the approach and skill they bring to the region is a true rarity."

2020 Ribera del Duero 'Picaro del Aguila' V.V.
Usually $65 - Special Offer $59

"A delicate combination of dark plum and cola scents alongside violet, blueberry and rock notes.

Picaro Tinto may be the 'young' wine of Dominio del Águila but this is a hell of a lot more serious than its jovial name suggests. It comes from old vineyards planted on clay and limestone on a northern exposure overlooking the Gromejon Valley. The old vines here are interplanted with heritage varietals, meaning Tinto Fino or Tempranillo is aided by tiny additions of Blanca del Pais, Garnacha, Bobal, Tempranillo Gris and others. As with all of Dominio del Águila's vineyards, they are farmed meticulously via organic methods with some biodynamic preparations."

2018 Ribera del Duero Reserva
Usually $199 - Special Offer $185

"...their flagship red wine that wants to be a representation of the village of La Aguilera—fine, serious and elegant. It's 95% Tempranillo with the remaining grapes found interplanted in their oldest vineyards at an average of 880 meters in altitude on limestone, clay and sandy soils. All the clusters ferment together with indigenous yeasts in concrete, where they are foot trodden, and malolactic was carried out very slowly (11 months) in oak barrels where the wine matured for a total of 27 months. It has a somewhat shy nose but is very elegant... It's still young, and the palate reveals lots of energy; the flavors are very pure and the wine precise and delineated. The tannins are very fine and provide for a chalky texture and an almost salty twist in the finish..."

Nanclares y Prieto

(Alberto) Nanclares and (Silvia) Prieto together make intense, transparent, Atlantic-influenced old vine Albariño.

They farm organically and employ a restrained hand in the cellar, only using native yeasts and no additions apart from modest amounts of SO2. Malolactic fermentation rarely occurs, and the wines spend a good amount of time (often a year or more) on their lees before being bottled without clarification or filtration.

Through this, the pair have managed something very rare: the refinement of Albariño into angular, age-worthy wines that express the fascinating terroir of the Rías Baixas.

2021 Rias Baixas 'Dandelion' Albarino
Usually $47 - Special Offer $42

"Off-dry Albarino with piercing acidity.

Dandelion is a blend of Albarino plots from around the north of the town of Meano and across into the village of Ribadumia. The parcels range from 25 - 70 years and are grown on granitic, sandy soils. Fermentation is stoppedwith 13 grams of residual sugar but it's intense minerality and pure acid drive more than balance the sweetness - the result is something almost akin of off-dry Chenin from the Loire, a wine of texture and grace rather than apparent sweetness."

2021 Rias Baixas 'Tempus Vivendi' Albarino
Usually $47 - Special Offer $42

"Sea salt and an almost vibrating acidity...

Tempus Vivendi is a blend of multiple plots from Sanxenxo at the very south tip of the Salnes valley, an outcrop of land that sticks straight out into the Atlantic Ocean. The climate here is noticeably colder and more exposed than the rest of Salnes and consequently, it is here that the Nanclares y Prieto wines become the most angular and austere. Riven with iodine and salt and structured by a bracing acidity Tempus Vivendi is about as far from the tropical, fruity Albarino often hidden under a garish label that's become a commercial success. Pitched and nervy when it's first released within a few months Tempus Vivendi settles into itself and develops into an immensely satisfying and serious version of Albarino."

La Rioja Alta

"La Rioja Alta is one of the guardians of traditional Rioja. The company was founded by merging vineyards of five local families in 1890 and these families are still in control of the company. La Rioja Alta and Lopez de Heredia are generally considered the last two houses who are remaining loyal to the classic profile of traditional Rioja. Yet change and innovation have not been avoided. When methodical experimentation has shown that changes to viticulture and vinification can improve the wine without sacrificing style or aging potential, then the winery has updated its techniques. Often these experiments will run for a decade before the results are deemed conclusive and a practice adopted...The winery uses only estate grown grapes and practices organic viticulture. Vineyards are vinified separately, then blended into the respective cuvees before extended barrel and bottle maturation...These are wines of surprising lightness and delicacy with immense aging potential."

2015 Rioja 'Vina Ardanza' Reserva
