Since it was founded in 1925, Domaine Henri Gouges make classic Nuits-St-Georges wines, which respect its various terroirs. These days, the domaine is run by Henri’s grandchildren Pierre and Christian, and Pierre’s son Gregory who is mainly in charge of the winemaking.
The winemaking is traditional for top Burgundy classics: There is severe sorting before complete desteming of the bunches. After relatively long cold maceration, fermentation takes place with the natural yeasts only, in low temperature (max 29 degrees centigrade). After the fermentation finishes, the wines are kept in the tanks in 28 degrees for additional 9-10 days in order to extract more colour and tannins. Next the wines are transferred to oak barrels, 15-20% of them are new. The wines are racked after the malolactic fermentation the following spring to summer, and the different cuvees are separately mixed in vats to ensure homogeneous wines.
The wines are then returned to barrels where they stay until bottling – normally 18 months after the vintage.
This great domaine is one of the very finest the whole Côte d’Or!

2020 Bourgogne Rouge
Usually $79 - Special Offer $74
"Outstanding, Top Value. Opaque. Ripe but fresh aromas are comprised mostly by black cherry and pungent earth scents that lead to rich and relatively full-bodied flavors that are dense, serious and moderately austere while offering unusually good depth and persistence. This will need a few years of keeping but it's actually quite impressive for its level."

2020 Nuits-St.-Georges
Usually $174 - Special Offer $164
"Racked to tank to bottle before Christmas. A massively deep black colour with a purple rim. The nose is supercharged, too flamboyant perhaps, but works better in the mouth. Some pepper behind with plenty of juice, recognisably Nuits with very good length."

2020 Nuits-St.-Georges 'Clos Fontaine Jacquinot'
Usually $194 - Special Offer $184
"The plot lies just above Château Gris and has been ‘tressed’ since 2016 with biodynamic trials since 2020. 20% whole bunch, no sulphur until an adjustment before bottling. But only 500 bottles made this year because some grapes were needed for the regular Nuits-St-Georges. Fresh mid purple, a more lifted nose, floral with peonies, very ripe raspberry. Excellent density behind with a sweetness of fruit, some pepper both black and white, good enough acidity and attractive length."

2020 Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru 'Clos des Porrets'
Usually $209 - Special Offer $199
"Very ripe yet still reasonably fresh aromas are comprised by notes of roasted plum, black cherry, cassis and earth. The dense, powerful and muscular broad-shouldered flavors are supported by a very firm tannic spine on the robust, serious and very compact finale. This is quite impressive though certainly not typical."

2020 Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Pruliers'
Usually $269 - Special Offer $249
"Outstanding. A more deeply pitched and brooding nose only grudgingly reveals its aromas of cassis plum liqueur and pungent earth where the latter is also found on the vibrant and well-detailed big-bodied and tautly muscular flavors that deliver excellent depth and persistence. This is not as dense as the best in the range, but it should have no trouble amply repaying 12 to 15 years of bottle aging."

"Almost black in the middle. More a very intense sun dried dark cherry bouquet than raisins though. Pretty heady stuff either way round. Super sumptuous with this exciting red cherry fruit as well as black, and good acidity. It would be easily possible to fall in love with this, even if it is more powerful than I really like."

2020 Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Vaucrains'
Usually $369 - Special Offer $349
"Here the nose if quite firmly reduced and revealing basically nothing today. This equally broad-shouldered flavors aren't quite as dense but they're certainly finer with good minerality and lift on the palate coating, balanced and beautifully persistent finale. This is very promising provided you have the patience to wait."

"Incredibly dense purple rather than black. While the bouquet follows a similar refrain to others in the Gouges 2020 line-up, there is more natural class from the vineyard site below. The clear limestone feel comes up through the middle and the palate is entirely red fruit. This one will really work. Refined tannins here. And the right acid balance. Excellent."

2020 Nuits-St.-Georges 1er Cru 'Les Saint Georges'
Extremely Limited $849
"Outstanding. Ripe but cool aromas of black cherry, dark currant, game and whiffs of warm earth complement the concentrated, powerful and equally serious and muscular larger-scaled flavors that flash fine length on the decidedly firm and balanced finale. This too is very promising though at least some patience is absolutely necessity."

"Cropped at just 14hl/ha, the 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Les Saint-Georges 1er Cru easilyhas the best bouquet from Gouges’s reds with a mixture of red and black fruit, sous-bois,pressed roses and just a smudge of liquorice. The palate is medium-bodied with saturatedtannins, a fine-boned structure with plenty of freshness and focus on the finish. There is alot of substance here and as such, this will require 4-6 years to reach its drinking window."
