Traditional Barolo Reinvigorated

by Hugh French | Sep 05, 2023

Scarzello

"Federico Scarzello is the third generation to make wine at his family’s estate in Barolo, taking over in 2001. The family started selling in bulk after WWII and bottled their first Barolo in 1978. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, his respect for traditional winemaking combined with an utter dedication to quality has meant that his wines today are among the best in the region.

Winemaking at Scarzello is very much in the traditional style. Fermentations are long – in some vintages over 50 days on the skins – and the wines are given extended ageing in large old oak casks and bottle. In practice, this means that Scarzello wines are released a year or so later than others. The wines display texture and finesse, and a subtle power that demands attention."

2021 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC
Extremely Limited $77

"A 'Superiore' Langhe Nebbiolo as the grapes come from the east-facing part of the Vigna Merenda! 15 days of maceration on the skins including the actual alcoholic fermentation then a passage in 'botte grande'. This 2021 is another beauty, with all the main register of Barolo- beautifully elegant, brightly red fruited with perfect tannins, the olfactory interwoven with the carnal scents of Barolo - this is one of the great Langhe Nebbiolo and sells quickly each year. A super quality/price ratio here.."

2016 Barolo del Comune di Barolo DOCG
Extremely Limited $179

"Barolo. Approximately 35 days on the skins. Bottled 15 September 2019. Mid ruby. Deep, dark and intriguing nose of cherry and balsamic notes with a hint of fire log. Needs to take a deep breath. Intense and stylish with great depth, length, freshness and tannic bite."
17+/20 Points

2017 Barolo Sarmassa 'Vigna Merenda' DOCG
Extremely Limited $209

"Barolo. Just mid ruby and youthful-looking. Exciting nose of raspberry and cherry with hints of oatmeal, black pepper and iron. Amazing depth of focused fruit. Succulent cherry fruit with a layer of fine, polished tannins. Very long and finely balanced and almost unrecognisable as a product of the torrid 2017 vintage. Oozes class."

2016 Barolo Sarmassa 'Vigna Merenda' DOCG
Extremely Limited $279

"The four small plots of Vigna Merenda that produce this wine come from the best part of Sarmassa. This 2016 is again just great; soil driven with a hint of iodine and tar with lots of chalky minerality. Very poised and composed with really lovely purity of fruit in the mouth. Suspended from a firm but lacy structure that lends this lovely texture and a real transparency here. Tobacco aromas emerge as well and on the palate there's really super ripeness here, layered, with later arriving cherry and wild strawberry fruit with a complex and sensual finish. This is a great wine from a famous Cru."
