Mount Mary - The Yarra Valley's Best Keeps Getting Better

by Hugh French | Nov 02, 2023

Mount Mary

"A single word cannot possibly do justice to Mount Mary’s Quintet, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Triolet. But they are joined at the hip by elegance. By all means add balance, purity and length, and as a codicil add longevity..."
James Halliday, The Wine Advocate

Yet another outstanding and overperforming vintage in 2021 has led to an astounding release from the Yarra Valley's Mount Mary. With winemaker Sam Middleton thoroughly in a groove, we've seen recent vintages rank within the most successful of his family's estate and this year's collection is no exception.

Below, we have the latest Mount Mary releases and a selection of back vintage wines that illustrate the immense level of Sam's craft, including the 100-point 2019 Quintet. But, if you're after some even older examples, click the link below to see our extensive collection of Quintet going back to 1996.

2021 Triolet
Buy Now for $120

"A 65/25/10% blend of sauvignon blanc/semillon/muscadelle. Crushed and destemmed with 20% whole bunches in the press. Barrel fermented and matured for 11 months in seasoned barriques. A stunning Triolet with its aromas of greengages, white nectarine, Meyer lemon, lemongrass and jasmine. There's a hint of sandalwood coming from the oak. Seductive, powerful and restrained. Slippery, chalky textured, tightly wound and very long, this is going to be a great and long-lived wine. In a league of its own."

2020 Triolet
Extremely Limited $105

"Sauvignon Blanc 62%, Semillon 28%, Muscadelle 10%.

Wow. This is pretty wild and very intense. Blackcurrant, fresh cut fennel, violets, spice, funk, nettles, lime rind. It’s showtime! Tight and tangy, all grapefruit and passionfruit, a glossy feel, but so flinty and sapid, thistle and zest, flinty texture on a long grapefruit pith finish. This is quite a wine. Embryonic as at now, and it feels so built for ageing. Excellent, but quite a different style for Triolet. I really like it."

2021 Chardonnay
Buy Now for $165

"The 2021 Chardonnay leads with crushed nuts, curry leaves, apple blossom, wet slate/river stones, spring flowers and brine on the nose. It is incredibly fragrant here today. In the mouth, the wine is detailed and rich; it undulates across the palate with notes of salted white stone fruit, nashi pear, a hint of loquat, crushed cashew and a hint of mustard seed. It's all here. The wine is so pretty and restrained, but it is complete and powerful at the same time. There is sandalwood and saffron, and the oak is toasty and spiced but is so precisely embossed into the fruit that it supports rather than frames. Malolactic fermentation is eschewed here, and it is absolutely not required. This is a wine of detail and precision, and this is never more true than in this lovely, balanced season. What a lovely wine. It has palate-staining fruit. The wine gets better as it sits in the glass."

2020 Chardonnay
Extremely Limited $159

"Four clones, hand picked, 20% whole-bunch pressed, the balance crushed and destemmed. Matured in French oak (30% new) for 11 months. Typically refined and elegant, but isn't stand-offish. The Yarra Valley's calling card of chardonnay is its extreme length, built around natural acidity and citrus zest. Oak is part of the upbringing, but discreet, and the wine has a very long plateau ahead."

2019 Chardonnay
Extremely Limited $149

"There must be some magic dust landing on Mount Mary or rather, its chardonnay site. Latterly, this has just been rockin' it. No different this year: a pristine, refined and ultra-elegant wine. A harmonious offering of citrus and light creamy leesy flavours, spice and vanilla-pod oak. The succulence via acidity ensures it lingers long. I got goosebumps tasting this."

2021 Pinot Noir
Buy Now for $210

"100% destemmed and fermented with as many whole berries as possible. Left to soak for four days, pre-fermentation with one pump over per day, then plunged three times per day. 15 months in French barriques (25% new). A bright crimson red. Perfumed and seductive even at this early stage. Aromas of wild red berries, gentle spice, dark rose and bracken. Concentrated and structured with very fine, sinewy and savoury tannins. A brilliant, non-mainstream Yarra Valley pinot that's been built to go the distance."

2020 Pinot Noir
Extremely Limited $229

"Intense optical scanning of every berry by sorting tables and Oscillys; matured in French oak (25% new) for 16 months. Radiant clear crimson. All the red berries of forest and field fill the bouquet and the strikingly fresh palate, which proceeds to expand on the finish with the proverbial peacock's tail on display."

2019 Pinot Noir
Extremely Limited $229

"The light ruby hue belies the whorl of intense flavour. Pretty aromatics. It bursts out with raspberries and cherries, then richer strawberry compote infused with bitter herbs, cloves and sarsaparilla. French oak is neatly tucked away, but acts as a support, while superfine tannins glide across a lighter- to medium-bodied frame. A beautiful and beguiling wine."

2021 Quintet
Buy Now for $210

"So, the 2021 Quintet comprises 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, Cabernet Franc 17%, Petit Verdot 6% and Malbec 2%. On the nose, there is a forest of red berries—mid-weight and balanced in their flow of aromatics. It has notes of pomegranate, cassis, a hint of cocoa, graphite and tobacco, star anise and salted licorice. In the mouth, the calling card of this estate is undoubtedly the tannins, and they flow and weave through the fruit at every turn. This is a silken wine, the tannins like carded silk. If you've ever carded fleece or a raw substrate like that, you know the satisfaction and progress of that process. The tannins here have that open-weave, unfettered feeling—they are what they are and are not created/built/etc. There is nothing forced here. The season has yielded a balanced and fine wine, and the tannins feel like they plume through the fruit, like blood in the water. I cannot separate the fruit from the tannin. It's chewy. Excellent. I'm looking forward to seeing this again in a decade."

2020 Quintet
Extremely Limited $199

"The 2020 season was cool in Yarra, and they worked hard to produce great wines in the season that was handed to them. So here, the fine-boned, ethereal and delicate 2020 Quintet is a reflection of the best aspects of that season. Sitting so pretty on the mid-palate right now, the wine is airy and spacious but compact and streamlined as well. It feels good in the mouth, and the ductile splay of tannin seems to shape the fruit is an athletic way. It has chew and bounce, within its framework. This is a superstar. It is still red fruited and inchoate, balanced though, eminently so."

2019 Quintet
Extremely Limited $209

"This is a great Quintet, one of the best in fact. Here’s a wine that combines such elegance, power and polish to a level seen in the best wines of Bordeaux in the best vintages. Aromas of blueberries, cassis and mulberries are framed in cedar and fresh, leafy cabernet tones, as well as violets and forest wood. Some subtle oak spice here, too. The palate is so seamlessly layered with ultra-fine tannins that carry pristine blueberry, redcurrant and blackcurrant flavors. Concentrated, with pitch-perfect balance. Acidity imbues the finish with freshness and vitality. So elegant and unwavering. A Yarra Valley First Growth! Delicious now, but try from 2027 and for a decade after that."
