For Marquis Savage, a short trip to New Zealand saw him instantly captivated by the natural beauty of Central Otago. So much so that Marquis decided to purchase 24 hectares in the Cromwell Basin, where he envisioned creating something special. Having extensive experience in the US wine trade, Marquis was able to bring in renowned winemaker Ted Lemon from the acclaimed Californian winery Littorai to consult on the project. Working together, they set out to create a winery that would perfectly capture the essence of Central Otago. And thus, Burn Cottage was born.
From the outset, Burn Cottage has always sought to produce sublime expressions of the Central Otago terroir through a sustainable and biodynamic approach. The resulting wines are lithe and bright, reflecting the best of Central Otago's unique landscape.

"The 2021 Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir is alive and energetic, svelte and composed. As I write this, I am sitting at the bottom of the Burn Cottage Vineyard in Lowburn, looking up the rows. This is a mineral, nuanced expression, with graphite and white tea, pomegranate pearls, raspberry licorice, rosehips and crushed pink peppercorns. This is what I came here for. It’s thrilling, lacy, delicate and focused. Exciting wine, exciting drinking. It sits on the palate nicely—evenly weighted, and it spools through the long finish... yes!"
