Jane Eyre's 2023 Australian Pinot Noir

by Hugh French | Mar 19, 2024

Jane Eyre

If you have been following Jane Eyre's story you'll know that she has achieved fame and acclaim for the Pinot Noir she makes in Australia and Burgundy - becoming the first Australian, and the first woman, to win the Negociant of the Year award by the Revue du Vin de France.

Jane is a renowned winemaker who has earned the nickname 'The Princess of Pinot' due to her exceptional skills in producing high-quality Pinot Noir. Despite the nickname, Jane is known for her down-to-earth personality and modest approach to winemaking.

She is widely celebrated for her ability to create Pinot Noir wines that are unassuming yet inviting, with a balanced and refined character. Her wines possess an understated charm that is both approachable and elegant, showcasing a remarkable sense of restraint that allows the true essence of the grape to shine through.

According to Jane, the 2023 Pinot Noir is a step up from the 2022 vintage. She notes that the 2023 wines are bright and intensely perfumed, yet possess a lovely elegance.

2023 Yarra Valley Pinot Noir
Usually $94 - Special Offer $87

"Bright, clear garnet colour. This wine is always slow out of the starting blocks but unravels with a bit of air. Aromas of cranberries and cherries blend with dried herbs. Upfront sweet fruit is followed by spice and a hint of pot pourri. Medium weight on the palate with good acidity and fine, persistent tannins. This wine presents as quite a delicate Pinot but opens up with time and fills out."

2023 Tasmania Pinot Noir
Usually $94 - Special Offer $87

"Recently bottled the wine benefits from some time in the glass to open up and allow all the components to come together. Dark garnet red in colour with dark fruit flavours, spice and cedar. The palate has good weight and is carried by good acidity and fine persistent tannins. Lots of red fruit flavours coupled with some spice/earth notes which adds some extra freshness to the wine."

2023 Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir
Usually $94 - Special Offer $87

This year saw a change of vineyard fruit. This wine now comes from a single vineyard that has a spectacular view looking out over the water to Philip Island. 2.5 acres planted in 1999 using MV6 on red, volcanic soil. It is sheltered by the ocean winds by an avocado grove at the bottom of the vineyard.A late ripening vineyard protected it from the devastatingly small crops caused by storms during the crucial flowering period.Handed picked and sorted. 20% whole bunch. 10% new oak. 10 days on skins. 10 months maturation. Unfined.
Distributor Notes

"Light garnet colour. Raspberries and orange rind with hints of spice on the nose are followed up with a savoury palate of dried herbs. Good acidity and fine, grippy tannins to finish."
Jane Eyre, Winemaker
