New Wave Beechworth Producer Nailing it!

by Hugh French | May 08, 2024

Schmolzer and Brown

Beechworth is currently one of the most exciting wine-growing regions in Australia. A new generation of talented and dynamic vintners is following in the footsteps of renowned winemakers like Rick Kinzbrunner of Giaconda and crafting exceptional wines in this region. Tess Brown and Jeremy Schmolzer are a great example of this. They have transformed a cleared hillside near Beechworth into a cool-climate gem. Today, we are offering the 'village' level of their wines, which provide immense value and epitomise the elegance of their high-altitude, cool-climate site.

2023 Beechworth Riesling
Usually $40 - Special Offer $37

"Quite some aromatics here, and with its rosewater, lychee and musky perfume, smells much like a Gewürztraminer. It’s juicy but fresh and bright, again that lychee thing, but cut with citrus and green mango, fine chalky texture is a highlight, a slight savoury character, and a long cool finish. Such a distinctive Riesling, offering abundant character and delicious ease of drinking."

2023 BeechworthChardonnay
Usually $40 - Special Offer $37

"Hewn from vineyards around Beechworth, a regional blast of chardy.

Spot on. So drinkable, so delicious. Cool refrains of saline minerality, alpine herbs, more green apple and grapefruit in its restrained and refreshing way. Touches of stone fruit, yeah, maybe, but gentle. It’s a tightly wound, vibrant and fresh feeling chardonnay that leans into its inherent regional restraint well. A delight to drink, high refreshment factor in tow. We good."

2023 Beechworth Pinot Noir
Usually $40 - Special Offer $37

"From Stanley soils in Beechworth, Victoria. Honest to goodness, with goodness writ large.

Sappy, slurpy, dark cherry fruited, woody spiced, touches of herbal lift, a bit of saline and brine in there, licks of cardmom, malt and charry spice too. This drinks well, soft and beautiful flow, long and lavish, medium weight with all the touchstones of neat and tidy pinot and a bit of complexing pizzazz. You’d get this for the bucks and be so happy. It pitches pinot at the right place and then some. Lovely. Easy."

2023 Beechworth Syrah
Usually $40 - Special Offer $37

"This a co-op of sites for a syrah from the magnificent folks of VS&B and their home town quarry of Beechworth.

First cracked and I raised an eyebrow at a little extra malty, spicy oak presence but that meshed in nicely and the wine hums with 30-or-so minutes of relaxing. Caveat, do take your time; worthy. I liked this a lot. It feels familiar and comforting, a welcomed slosh of dark cherry, clove spice, twiggy wood elements, bay leaf, faint mint and dark chocolate, brined green olive with a slip of granite-like mineral, rocky charm. Medium weight, faint but gently shaping silky tannins chime in, a long, cool finish ensues. It’s such a delight."
