One of the best - Ceritas Wines

by Hugh French | Sep 05, 2024

"Proprietor John Raytek's impressive resume includes two years at Rhys and another four years at Copain. Raytek's wines are distinctive and full of personality. Ceritas is focused on cooler-climates sites. The vineyards are farmed following organic or biodynamic principles, depending on the site... These gorgeous wines are deserving of serious attention."

Ceritas Wines

Ceritas have twelve sites that they source from today inSonoma and Santa Cruz, not necessarily owned by, but all under Ceritas control. All farmed organically or bio-dynamically. They have noted that disease pressure is higher towards the coast and there is almost none as you go inland towards Dry Creek Valley, most of their vineyards are thus 3-6 miles inland from the coast. The further away from the coast they look for vineyards facing away from the sun and the opposite closer to the coast.

Vine age is important, John looks for vines over 30 years old with deep root systems that permit dry farming. He also only looks for "pre-Dijon" suitcase clones from Burgundy and native American heirloom clones. For example he produces Chardonnay from the Wente clone only and there are different selection of the Wente clone. For Pinot Noir he selects only the Calera, Swan, Mt Eden and Pommard clones as they are slower to ripen, retain more acidity and have a diversity of ripening pattern.

For elevage he works with only two coopers, tight grain wood and with the lowest possible toast and absolutely no char. Chardonnay sees no new wood at all and Pinot Noir sees 25% new wood as an average across all wines.

2022 TBH Chardonnay

Usually $239

Special Offer $226

"From TBH Vineyard (The Barlow Homestead) in the Green Valley of Russian River AVA. This vineyard, planted in 2009 by Paul and Kathryn Sloan of Small Vines Winery at their estate in Graton, features dense planting with 4×3 spacing and is dry farmed on Goldridge fine sandy loam soils. The Chardonnay grapes are hand harvested and barrel fermented in 7–12-year-old barrels with complete malolactic fermentation and no lees stirring. The wine is then aged for 12 months on gross lees in neutral barrels, resulting in a refined Chardonnay with a 12% ABV."

2022 Zephyr Chardonnay

Usually $239

Special Offer $226

"Perched above the Freestone Valley sits the Zephyr vineyard smack in the bullseye of the coastal influences flowing between the Bodega Headlands and the Sebastopol Hills. Cold air sweeps across the low-lying coastal hills bringing in moisture-laden fog and scents of sea spray. The meager sandstone soils with little to no topsoil restrict the growth of the vines here, bringing near-perfect balance to the small crop they need to ripen. Zephyr is the last Chardonnay site that we harvest in the West Sonoma Coast, a full two weeks after Porter-Bass, Charles Heintz, and Carex. This is an exotic version of Chardonnay, unlike any other wine. Savory and salty with notes of green tea and star jasmine."

2022 Trout Gulch Pinot Noir

Usually $285

Special Offer $269

"Our southernmost vineyard, Trout Gulch, sits a mere 3.5 miles from the ocean. Trout Gulch sits at 750 feet above the hamlet of Aptos in the southern Santa Cruz Mountains. The vineyard was planted in 1980 to Wente Chardonnay and Mt Eden Pinot Noir and is carefully tended to by winemaker/vigneron Richard Alfaro. Uplifted oceanic sandy soils create unique drainage sending the vines deep into marine-derived sub-soils. Tucked into a cool coastal redwood drainage allows temperatures here to stay cooler than expected – summertime highs rarely exceeding 80F."

2022 Hellenthal Vineyard 'Old Shop Block' Pinot Noir

Usually $285

Special Offer $269

98 Points

"A jeweled ruby color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Hellenthal Old Shop Block has a crystalline feel, with fantastic purity in its note of fresh cherries, rocky earth, saline, and a hint of savory umami. Long on the palate, it is saturated and has an expansive energy, with ripe tannins and a long, long finish. It is only going to improve as it starts to develop its more tertiary notes. Drink 2025-2040."
