Luigi and Fiorina Baudana are the namesakes of Baudana, a hamlet north of Serralunga d’Alba, and the historical cru on the hill's western slope. Their family's history is somewhat obscure, and Luigi was never sure whether they named the place or took their name from it. Encouraged by Fiorina, they decided to stop selling grapes to cooperatives and began producing their own estate wines in 1996.
In 2008, the Baudanas met the Vaira family, who suggested becoming the 'guardians' of their history rather than simply taking over their land. In 2009, the Vaira family indicated that they could be entrusted to Luigi and Fiorina's estate and generational endeavours. Since this time, Luigi Baudana has been managed by Giuseppe, Isidoro, and Francesca Vaira, under the guidance of their parents, Aldo and Milena. Aldo, who founded G.D. Vajra in the early ’70s, combined a revolutionary spirit with respect for tradition, allowing the family to carry on the Baudana legacy. The resulting Barolo wines xemplify the complexity and purity of Nebbiolo.
The 2021 vintage, marked by excellent quality and character, produced world-class wines despite challenges such as spring frost and summer hail. Those who managed to secure the G.D. Vajra Barolo wines from 2021 can attest to how the family thrived during the stellar 2021 vintage. The Serralunga commune wine consistently serves as an immaculate and great-value representative of the region, and this release is exceptional. The Baudana and Cerretta Barolos showcase the results when a family filled with artistry and ambition is given the freedom to explore great terroirs in a remarkable vintage.
